I Became The Chief Of A Primitive Village

Chapter 387, It Will Give You a Stomachache

Many figures appeared in the forest, beginning to gather in one location.

They all started preparing to leave the forest, as several hours had already passed.

The time had now reached 3 PM, and the Warrior Trainees had finished gathering mushrooms.

Everyone’s baskets were filled with mushrooms, and they could all be said to be returning with a full harvest.

Yan Hua patted her basket with satisfaction, saying, “We can eat mushrooms tonight!”

She had been imagining how these mushrooms would taste while picking them.

Although she was not a glutton, Su Bai had previously fed her too many delicacies. She simply could not help but look forward to the taste of the mushrooms.

“It must be delicious, the Shaman did say we can eat them once we bring them back,” Sha Lan was also anticipating the taste of mushrooms.

Her palate had also been cultivated. After eating so many delicious things, returning to the previous style of roasted meat would probably result in complaints.

As the saying goes, it was easy to go from frugal to luxurious, but difficult to go from luxurious to frugal. Everyone likes eating good food, but after eating too many delicacies, one would not want to return to eating ordinary food.

“Let’s hurry back then, I wonder how the Shaman will prepare the mushrooms,” Yan Hua curiously said.

“We’ll know once we get back.” Sha Lan walked in front, heading straight toward the Tribe.

*Step step step…*

*Pitter patter…*

Everyone pressed on through the rain and mist until they reached the Tribe, arriving at their morning gathering place, where they placed their baskets on the ground one after another.

Each person’s basket was filled with mushrooms, some were even overflowing.

Yan Jiao was already waiting for them at the spot, looking at everyone’s baskets filled with mushrooms.

He nodded with satisfaction, saying. “Very good, everyone has completed their mission well.”

“Yes.” The Warrior Trainees responded in unison, all wearing smiles.

“Next, we’ll wait for the Shaman to identify them. Once it is confirmed that these mushrooms are non-poisonous, you can all eat them.” He added.

“Yes.” The Warrior Trainees responded once again.

*Step step step…*

Yan Hua, Sha Lan, and some Warrior Trainees were responsible for carrying all these mushrooms to the Shaman.

Half an hour later, all the mushrooms appeared on the second floor of the cement house.

Su Bai looked at the twenty-plus baskets of mushrooms in the living room, saying with satisfaction, “Just as I expected.”

He had thought that the rainy season would naturally have many mushrooms growing, and picking mushrooms at this time would yield the plumpest and freshest ones.

“Shaman, why do mushrooms only come out when it rains?” Yu Ying also saw the room full of mushrooms.

She was curious about why these things only grew when it rained, and not during normal times.

“This is like Tree Cicadas and Rain Snakes, they can only grow under specific conditions, so they’re not available at all times.” Su Bai explained.

Actually, mushrooms were fungi, and do not produce seeds. They could only reproduce through spores, and wherever the spores spread, new mushrooms would grow.

Mushrooms could not produce their own nutrients, so they can only use their mycelium to extend into soil and rotting wood. They use their mycelium to absorb existing nutrients to live, so mushrooms often grow in damp, warm places rich in organic matter.

When spores fall into the soil, they produce mycelium to absorb nutrients and water, then produce fruiting bodies.

What they had collected was the mushroom that people usually see. However, the rest of their body was so small, they were not easily noticed by Human eyes.

Mushrooms needed to absorb enough water, so that they could stretch out. Therefore, after the rain, mushrooms grow both abundantly and quickly.

Of course, mushrooms will grow during normal times too, but very, very rarely, and only in extremely humid environments.

The mushrooms that grow at that time do not taste as good, because such limited environments have stronger smells and flavours. They were also not as fresh and plump as the mushrooms that grow during rainy days.

“So that’s how it is.” Yu Ying nodded thoughtfully, continuing to ask, “Shaman, then how should we eat them?”

“Can we eat them raw? Like lettuce.” Yan Hua was already holding a mushroom.

“No, mushrooms cannot be eaten raw, they contain many substances harmful to the body, they must be cooked.” Su Bai immediately warned.

Wild mushrooms contain various toxic peptides and alkaloids, substances which were very harmful to the Human body.

They must be eliminated through high-temperature. Eating mushrooms raw would cause diarrhea, poisoning, and situations that endanger one’s health.

Yan Hua, hearing about the harmful substances, immediately put down the mushroom in her hand.

She patted her hands and asked, “Shaman, do we need to roast the mushrooms to eat them?”

“You can roast them, and you can also boil them, there are many ways to prepare them”

Back on Earth, there were too many mushroom delicacies, including fried, deep-fried, boiled, made into soup, etc.

“Shaman, can we start eating the mushrooms now?” Yu Ying wagged her pink fox tail.

“Wait a moment, I need to check if all the mushrooms you brought back are safe to eat.” Su Bai raised his hand.

This step was something he had to personally do. After all, it was the Warrior Trainees’ first-time picking mushrooms. Their knowledge about mushrooms could be said to be completely zero. So, these mushrooms definitely needed to be checked first.

Only after confirming all the mushrooms were fine could they be distributed to the Tribesmen.

If some of these mushrooms were poisonous, they could be used as teaching materials, reminding the Warrior Trainees not to pick these mushrooms the next time.

“Shaman, let me help you.” Yu Ying immediately said.

“Pour out all the mushrooms, I need to look at all of them.” Su Bai nodded.

“Yes,” the girls said in unison.

Su Bai began half-squatting while looking at the mushrooms covering the ground.

Because there were more than twenty baskets of mushrooms, the inspection took almost half an hour.

Su Bai was not careless at all while checking them, carefully looking at each one.

Of course, he did not just squat down to look, but roughly glanced at them one by one, picking up suspicious ones for closer inspection.

Those mushrooms were obviously non-poisonous and only needed a quick glance, not spending too much time on them.
