I Became The Chief Of A Primitive Village

Chapter 395, Spearfishing

The rain continued to patter down from the sky as Su Bai and the others were staying in the second floor’s living room.

He had woken up early today, and after reading for a while, he began considering the Tribe’s future development.

The Tribe’s development could not be allowed to stagnate because of the rainy season. Otherwise, they would enter a period of stagnation for about a month every year.

“Shaman, what are you doing?” Yu Ying asked curiously, occasionally adjusting her glasses.

“I’m thinking about how to make the Tribe better.” Su Bai smiled.

“Shaman, we’re going to the river to catch fish.” Yan Hua had already put on her Animal Hide clothing, appearing fully prepared to set out.

Sha Lan was the same, having also changed into her clothes with Animal Hide foot protective cover wrapped around her feet.

“What are you all planning to do?” Su Bai was seeing them in this attire for the first time.

“We’re going to the riverside to spear fish.” Yan Hua said with a smile, looking very excited.

“Spear fish by the river?” Su Bai was even more confused. [In this weather? Are you serious? Why haven’t I heard of this beforehand?]

“The tide has ebbed today, the water level has dropped somewhat, and many fish will jump out of the water, so we’re taking this opportunity to spear fish.” Yan Hua explained.

“The river tide ebbs today?” Su Bai was hearing about this for the first time.

Yan Hua nodded and said, “It happens once every few days, and we always go spear fishing at this time.”

Yan Hua was eager to try, as this activity was always easy for her.

This was considered part of their training, spearing the fish that jumped from the river also required precision. If their precision was not good enough, or if they did not apply enough force, they would miss those jumping fish.

“So, that’s how it is. In that case, I’ll come along to watch.” Su Bai stood up.

Previously, because the Warrior Trainees’ training was conducted in the forest, where they had to jump up and down every day. Whether holding spears or bone spikes, it was truly troublesome. Even to watch them, it had been too troublesome, so he had not gone with them before.

Now that they were just going to the riverside, he only needed to watch from a distance, and it would not be too troublesome to watch them.

“Okay!” Yan Hua immediately agreed.

After all, it was just by the riverside, and now that the tide had ebbed, the river would be safe, so the Shaman’s safety was guaranteed. Moreover, she hoped the Shaman would come. She wanted him to see the results of her training.

“En.” Su Bai stood up and adjusted himself before preparing to go out.

Just as he stood up, he felt burning gazes from behind.

Su Bai turned around to find Yu Ying staring intently at him, and he said with a smile, “Well, since the rain isn’t heavy now, and we’re just going to the riverside, why don’t you come along as well?”

He was happy that the girls wanted to stick close to him.

“Yay! I finally get to join in.” Yu Ying’s pitiful expression instantly changed to a happy one.

“Then, I’ll join too,” Co Co immediately said, having grown a bit bored staying in the room too long.

*Step step step…*

The group began walking towards the direction of the river. Apart from the Warrior Trainees, Su Bai, Yu Ying and the others all carried umbrellas.

After more than half an hour, everyone had arrived at the riverside, where there were many people gathered.

Not only were there Warrior Trainees, but also some young and strong men from the Tribe, and even women were there.

When the river ebbed, many fish would come out, and although spearing fish required some precision, anyone with even a little technique could join in, as the riverside was not very dangerous at this point in time.

So, many strong and healthy people from the Tribe were willing to come. Why? Because any fish they caught at this time would be their own.

Even if they could only catch one fish in a day, it would still count as an extra meal. Naturally, that means there were a lot of people at the riverside right now.

“It has really ebbed. It looks much shallower than yesterday.” Su Bai said.

Yesterday the river water had overflowed onto the shore, but now, the water level had indeed dropped by about ten hands (around 3 metres).

Although this depth was neither here nor there, on this endless river, it made a very different sight. There were clear visible changes.

“Shaman, we’ll go spear fish now, so please wait for us here.” Yan Hua had dozens of spears tied to her back.

“En, go ahead.” Su Bai waved.

*Step step step…* Yan Hua happily pulled the cat eared girl along to run to the riverside, thinking about how many fish they would catch today.

At this moment, people were lined up neatly along the riverbank, everyone’s eyes fixed on the water’s surface.

Looking to see which fish would become their meal, they all gripped their long spears tightly, no one daring to relax.

Yan Hua appeared particularly serious, her red pupils blinking very rarely, all to not miss a single fish.

Sha Lan was the same, her blue eyes looking left and right, seeking to find the biggest fish to spear in one go.

“Shaman, Ah’Hua and the others look so serious.” Yu Ying remarked.

She was also seeing the Warrior Trainees’ training in the rainy season up close for the first time.

“Why catch fish in the river? Is there not enough food in the Tribe?” Co Co asked.

The blonde girl did not understand why they would do this.  She had just heard them say yesterday that the river was dangerous. So, why was everyone now running to the riverside to catch fish?

“The Tribe doesn’t lack food. They do this because they want to eat a bit more for themselves. It’s also one of the training methods for the Warriors of the Tribe.” Su Bai explained.

Since Co Co had lost her memories, it was understandable that she did not know about these things.

“But didn’t I hear the Shaman mention something about fish traps yesterday? Then, why do we still need to use spears to catch fish?” Co Co asked, puzzled.

“They can collect the nets in the evening. It needs some time to trap the fishes. During that time, it’s reasonable for Warriors to catch fish by the riverside.” Su Bai continued.

The fish traps had only been placed for one day. It needed to be left for a longer time to be effective.

Moreover, now that it was ebbing tide, many fish would certainly try to swim away, and there was no guarantee they would not damage the fish trap when swimming.

“…” Co Co nodded thoughtfully, her golden eyes continuously watching the riverside.

“It really is a magnificent sight though,” Su Bai mused.

At this moment the site was full of people. This was despite it being the rainy season, where they usually hid in their wooden houses.

Now, for the sake of food, everyone had rushed to the riverside to catch fish.

[Indeed, only food could make these people obediently listen. I guess in their eyes, meat is king.]
