Chapter 381, Precious Delicacy

Su Bai instructed Yu Ying  to wash the potatoes thoroughly, emphasizing that they must be meticulously cleaned.

He decided not to peel them, as many potato dishes could be prepared without removing the skin, which could not affect the taste.

This was especially true for salt and pepper potatoes, as well as small potato dishes, where the skin remained intact.

“Shaman, I’ve cleaned them thoroughly. Please check if they’re acceptable.” Yu Ying handed over the washed potatoes.

“Very good,” Su Bai nodded.

*Step step step…* Yan Hua and Sha Lan had returned from outside, having changed out of their wet clothes.

Though their hair was still wet, they did not mind as long as their bodies were dry.

“Shaman, why are you personally roasting food today?” Yan Hua immediately noticed the potatoes in his hands.

Sha Lan also saw them and, blinking her blue eyes, asked, “Shaman, are you cooking sweet potatoes? But, they look a little different.”

“The Shaman says they’re potatoes. Today’s breakfast will be pan-fried potato chunks,” Yu Ying quickly stood up and explained.

Yu Ying was eager with anticipation written clearly across her forehead.

“Potatoes?” This was Yan Hua’s first time seeing one, “Are they made from soil?”

“They don’t look like it. They look similar to sweet potatoes though,” Sha Lan remained more rational.

Yu Ying smiled, wagging her pink fox tail, saying happily/ “The Shaman says each potato is…”

Yu Ying explained potatoes to the two of them, adding that they would taste delicious, though she had not tried them herself.

“What are you all doing?” Co Co had also come to the third floor, having found no one when she opened her door in the morning.

She discovered the stairs, and although she did not know what stairs were, curiosity drove her to climb up.

Those stairs amazed her. Each step felt as solid as walking on flat ground, and they kept going higher.

When she arrived at the third floor, the sight she saw stunned her.

If she had not heard Yu Ying’s voice, she probably would have stood there for a long time.

“We’re making breakfast.” Yu Ying immediately ran over and pulled the blonde girl’s hand to bring her closer.

It had to be mentioned that overtime, Yu Ying’s personality had begun to change. She was no longer being as timid as before. Though she had not become bold, she was no longer shy around familiar faces and had become really lively around her friends.

“Thank you,” Co Co said to Su Bai.

She had thought about it all night and felt she needed to properly thank the person who had saved her. Moreover, since he was the respected Shaman of this Tribe, and had allowed her such a nice room to sleep in, she needed to properly express her gratitude.

“Sit down first. Breakfast will soon be ready.” Su Bai nodded slightly and continued teaching Yu Ying, “When they turn golden, immediately flip them over.”

After giving him the cleaned potatoes, Yu Ying had cut them into several pieces with a small knife.

They were not large, but the shapes were very uniform, appearing roughly like squares.

“Understood,” Yu Ying nodded seriously, her pink eyes not daring to look elsewhere, only focused intently on the potatoes.

*Sizzle sizzle…* The potatoes made continuous sizzling sounds on the iron pan, and their aroma began to spread.

“It smells so good!” Yan Hua deeply inhaled the spreading fragrance twice, her red eyes immediately filling with anticipation.

“It does seem like it will taste really good.” Sha Lan also sniffed the aroma, fanning the scent toward herself.

“What’s being made? Seems like something I’ve never seen before.” Co Co muttered. She immediately noticed the iron pan and that knife, both of which she had never seen before.

Her golden eyes kept examining these two items. As for the potatoes, they did not particularly interest her.

Her main attention was focused on observing the iron pan, wondering what it was made out of.

“What’s wrong?” Yan Hua noticed her dazed expression.

Co Co pointed at the iron pan and asked, “What is that thing? Is it made of stone?”

Though she asked this, in her heart, she knew it was not made of stone.

“It’s not made of stone, the Shaman says it’s… it’s iron, yes, that’s what it is.” Yan Hua said.

Co Co frowned, having never heard this word before, “What is iron?”

“I don’t know either, it’s my first time hearing about it too,” Yan Hua shook her head.

“Iron?” Co Co muttered to herself, frowning in thought, deciding she must figure it out later.

*Sizzle sizzle…* Yu Ying had also begun to help with the cooking, placing the fried potato pieces on leaves after they were done.

These were instructions given to her by Su Bai. Using leaves, they would not need to wash the dishes after breakfast. Furthermore, the leaves would absorb the oil, making the food less greasy.

Yu Ying also prepared tea for everyone, another of Su Bai’s instructions, as it would taste good with the potato chucks.

“Shaman, here’s yours.” Yu Ying handed over several pieces, with some dried meat on top.

Besides frying the potato chucks, she had also fried some dried meat as a side dish.

Co Co stared at the food before her in amazement, as this was her first time seeing such food.

Even though her memories were not very clear, she knew with certainty that she had never seen this kind of food before.

“Try it. You’ll come to like the taste.” Su Bai said, taking the first bite himself.

Yan Hua and the others followed suit, picking up their chopsticks and reaching for the potatoes.

“It’s delicious! It tastes very different from sweet potatoes.” Yu Ying said happily. She was so happy that her pink fox tail kept wagging. She could not help but enjoy the chucky texture of the potatoes.

“Yes, it’s really delicious, and the smell is so fragrant.” Sha Lan found it incredible. She had not expected this unassuming thing to taste so good.

“It’s so fragrant, crispy, and soft inside.” Yan Hua had already eaten three or four pieces.

This was their first time trying potatoes, and pan-fried ones at that, with some salt sprinkled on top.

They were crispy and fragrant, with a hint of saltiness – for those from a Primitive Tribe, they were used to fatty meat. So, this taste was unique and extraordinary to them.

Though such flavours were commonplace on Earth, and many people did not like them that much, in a Primitive Tribe, they were a precious delicacy.

“This… this taste…” Co Co was stunned after her first bite.
