The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

Upon hearing the footsteps of two people approaching, Jiang An slightly turned his body.

Director Hou was the first to speak, his voice steady as he said, ”Mr. Jiang, thank you for your hard work.”

Jiang An heard this and responded with a slight nod, a silent acknowledgment.

In this brief interaction, Director Lu, standing nearby, keenly noticed that Jiang An’s expression held a thin layer of frost, and his demeanor appeared particularly heavy compared to usual.

And understandably so, for the current case was indeed quite unusual.

It had not only been dragging on for a long time, with elusive clues, remaining unsolved and gradually becoming a burden on everyone’s mind.

What was particularly notable was that the suspect lurking behind the mist seemed to have behavior patterns and motivations completely different from any criminal they had dealt with before.

Then, Director Hou got straight to the point, ”Jiang An, what do you think?”

Upon hearing this, Jiang An remained silent for a moment.

After a while, he raised his eyes and analyzed, ”I think that Li Mountain in the interrogation room, is not very likely to be the suspect.”

His words were decisive, without a shred of doubt.

Upon hearing this, Director Hou’s eyes deepened suddenly, and he nodded lightly.

Director Lu also immediately straightened his back—for in his mind, Jiang An’s criminal investigation instincts and reasoning abilities were always top-notch. It was due to Jiang An redirecting the investigation at a critical moment that allowed them to find a crack in the deadlock and reach the current breakthrough.

At that moment, the door of the interrogation room made a light ”creak” sound.

Then, the three of them simultaneously turned their gaze towards the door.

Zhang Biao walked out, his expression relaxed, even brushing off invisible dust from his uniform shoulder as he walked.

Seeing Director Hou and Director Lu, he immediately put on a smile and greeted them briskly, ”Director Hou, Director Lu!”

Director Lu nodded, ”Thank you for your hard work.”

”Oh, it’s nothing,” Zhang Biao’s tone lifted, with a kind of refreshing relief.

”Now that the case has reached this point, no matter how tired, it’s worth it!”

”Compared to the time of running day and night without a clue, the current exhaustion is negligible.”

After finishing, he noticed that the three in front did not have the relaxed or gratified expressions he had expected.

Director Hou’s face was calm, Director Lu’s eyes were serious.

And Jiang An, still had that heavy look.

Zhang Biao’s smile paused, a flash of doubt crossing his eyes, ”What... is there a problem? Hasn’t the case been solved? Are you... not pleased?”

At these words, the three of them exchanged glances, a subtle sense of heaviness lingering in the air.

Ultimately, it was Jiang An who first broke the silence and spoke, ”Mr. Zhang, regarding this case, I think Li Mountain... has some issues.”

”Issues? What issues?”

Mr. Zhang was slightly surprised, leaning forward slightly.

”During the interrogation earlier, didn’t he confess to everything?”

”Moreover, after you left, I intentionally stayed behind to chat with him for a bit.”

”In our conversations, he expressed deep remorse for what he did back then, especially when mentioning that murder case, his emotions were full of guilt.”

”He said being arrested now made him feel calmer—in some way, it’s a repayment for his past sins, allowing social order to be more stable.”

”It sounds like his attitude makes a lot of sense.”

Jiang An nodded slightly, yet still appeared grim, ”The logic holds, on a rational and emotional level, it seems plausible.”

”But one thing that greatly concerns me—his recollection of the specific details of the case seems perpetually vague, one could even say... completely unclear.”

”Oh, that’s what you mean.”

Mr. Zhang’s expression eased upon hearing this, ”Isn’t that normal?”

”After all, he is a patient with mental illness and might have been in an episode during the crime. Memory gaps or blur aren’t uncommon, right?”

”Next, why don’t we follow the procedure for evidence collection from psychiatric patients and contact a professional psychological expert to perform hypnosis on him?”

”Perhaps in a subconscious state, we can reconstruct the crime scene and verify if our earlier assumptions are correct.”

Director Lu, who had been quietly listening, chimed in at this point, ”This method has its merits, but one thing we must be particularly aware of: statements obtained through hypnosis cannot be directly used as criminal evidence legally, they can only serve as a reference for investigation direction or as an auxiliary means for internal verification.”

He paused briefly, his eyes sweeping over the two people in front of him, continuing steadily, ”However, based on the currently available preliminary information, there doesn’t seem to be much controversy in this case overall.”

Jiang An slowly shook his head, a trace of doubt emerging between his brows, ”Director Lu, Mr. Zhang, perhaps I feel differently.”

”I believe there are still some aspects of this case that we haven’t clarified.”

”The most crucial part is the crime process itself—Li Mountain’s confession has always been vague, he not only fails to recall specific details, but even the motive remains unclear.”

”This situation actually poses significant risks to our investigation process.”

”Ah, so that’s what you meant,” Mr. Zhang realized, his tone still carrying a few traces of indifference.

”I thought there was a bigger doubt.”

”These detailed issues, we always have the chance to clarify them slowly later.”

”Besides, I haven’t really dealt much with cases involving psychiatric patients before, lacking experience, having concerns is quite normal.”

Jiang An, however, still wore a solemn expression, adding, ”Precisely because we have limited experience, we need to be more cautious.”
