The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

Immediately, the conference room was enveloped in a suffocating silence.

Everyone exchanged glances, their eyes filled with bewilderment.

Especially Director Lu and Zhang Biao, sitting in the front row, whose expressions were so grim that water could almost drip from them.

In fact, ever since they received the notice from the provincial department, learning that a special investigation team would be dispatched to reopen this long-neglected cold case, their hearts were filled with resistance and skepticism.

In the eyes of Director Lu and Zhang Biao, this was nothing more than another instance of formality outweighing content, adding only to the reception burden on the grassroots level, without any actual significance.

After all, the case had been investigated by a special team five times before, with experts from the provincial department supervising multiple times, yet no breakthrough had been achieved.

And this time, only two people were sent, including one who was a novice serving as a criminal investigation captain for the first time—such deployment seemed merely perfunctory.

Therefore, from the very start of receiving the task, Director Lu and Zhang Biao held strong unwillingness towards the reopening of this case.

It was only due to the superior orders that they were forced to cooperate with the work.

And it was precisely because of this that, during the meeting just now, they deliberately took the opportunity to make things difficult, hoping to give the special investigation team a scare, expecting them to give up in face of difficulties and withdraw soon, thus avoiding a series of cumbersome receptions and reports later on.

But, contrary to what they wished,

the young captain of the investigation team did not show any sign of fear. Instead, with a calm and sharp retort, he completely turned the situation around.

At this moment, under the silent gaze of the entire scene, Director Lu and Zhang Biao felt like they were sitting on pins and needles, inwardly annoyed: instead of giving the other side a scare, they had clearly shot themselves in the foot.

At this moment, the ponytailed female officer who had been quietly moving her mouse suddenly spoke up, ”Mr. Jiang, I’ve been staring at the screen for a while, and it seems... there’s nothing particularly different.”

”Isn’t this just a woman’s abdomen? If there’s a difference, it might be that it looks a bit larger than the average abdomen, considering the fetus has been delivered.”

The moment the words were spoken, the faces of those veteran officers who had just been raising objections turned a bit awkward.

She was unintentional, yet she happened to point out the focus of their previous dispute.

One of the senior veteran officers cleared his throat, took over the conversation, with a tone carrying a slight, unintentional smile: ”Indeed, Mr. Jiang, this does look quite ordinary, so why not enlighten us?”

”Otherwise, how could we laymen see that there’s an anomaly hidden in the place that ’looks perfectly normal’?”

His words were subtle but carried a barbed hint.

”Looks normal, how could there be an anomaly”—this itself is a verbal contradiction, and most in the room could hear the unspoken undertone: If Captain Zhang couldn’t explain, wasn’t he just making things up and pretending to be profound?

Jiang An listened to the questioning without showing any sign of irritation on his face. He merely smiled gently and calmly began to respond, ”The old gentleman is right, it’s quite normal that everyone can’t see it at a glance.”

”Since you all have questions, let me take this opportunity to explain in detail.”

His words were peaceful, his expression sincere, but he knew that it was not appropriate to be too forceful at the moment.

Being new to the place, progressing the investigation in the future would require the support and cooperation of the colleagues present, and if he tense things up from the start, conducting the subsequent work might become even harder.

Thinking this, his gaze slowly swept across the entire meeting room, taking in everyone’s expressions before continuing, ”What you are seeing now in this autopsy photo, at first glance, indeed doesn’t look much different from the autopsy images of bodies we see usually.”

”If there are any subtle differences, perhaps it is as the senior sister just mentioned, the deceased woman’s abdomen appears slightly swollen, with the local skin looking a bit loose.”

”This truly aligns with the physiological traits shortly after childbirth—after the delivery of the fetus, the pressure within the abdominal cavity decreases suddenly, causing the abdominal volume to noticeably retract from a physical space perspective.”

”However, what I wish to draw everyone’s attention to is not this natural physiological change, but some unusual signs of violent force found on the skin of the deceased’s abdomen.”

While Jiang An was speaking, he used the laser pointer in his hand to indicate the close-up areas on both sides of the abdomen on the projection screen, ”The positions of these marks are on the left and right sides of the abdomen.”

As soon as these words were spoken, low murmurs of discussion arose in the meeting room, with many people whispering, the atmosphere clearly becoming agitated.

One experienced senior detective immediately retorted, ”Mr. Jiang, you’re referring to the marks on the sides of the abdomen—is it the darkened areas you’re talking about?”

”But aren’t those just livor mortis? Even for us ordinary detectives, it’s apparent that those are typical presentations of livor mortis.”

”Besides, when we found the deceased, she was in a prone position, and the livor mortis was distributed on the lower parts of the body, in areas that were not compressed, fully consistent with livor mortis formation rules.”

At this moment, a rustling of whispers finally echoed in the venue.

The attendees exchanged glances, their eyes revealing skepticism and confusion, as if Jiang An’s earlier points were sheer nonsense, hard to believe.

Just as the murmuring began to rise, Jiang An calmly raised a hand, signaling everyone to quiet down slightly.

”Earlier, many colleagues pointed out that these marks are livor mortis, and this is indeed undeniable—from the morphology and distribution, the spots in this area fully conform to the typical characteristics of livor mortis fusion and aggregation.”
