The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

Jiang An and Zhang Biao quickly left the office one after the other, striding down the corridor towards the interrogation room.

The sound of their footsteps echoed in the empty corridor, clear and urgent.

Zhang Biao glanced at Jiang An walking beside him, his tone sincere and humble: ”Mr. Jiang, you’ll lead this interrogation, I’ll assist you.”

”It’s a good opportunity for me to learn as well, to see how these interrogation techniques are applied in real situations.”

Jiang An’s lips curled into a subtle, yet slightly heavy smile: ”There aren’t really any fixed techniques, it mainly depends on whether you have ’cards’ in hand.”

”In the end, an interrogation is like a battle of psychology and evidence; having a grip on the opponent’s weakness is key to maintaining control.”

He paused and sighed lightly, ”However, in this case... we don’t have much hard evidence in hand.”

Zhang Biao nodded, his expression becoming serious as well.

Having experienced many similar situations, he agreed with Jiang An’s words and added, ”Yes, if the evidence isn’t solid, even if we increase the interrogation’s intensity to the maximum, it’s hard not to feel uneasy.”

”But if we hold critical material evidence—even if it’s just a clear fingerprint or a piece of definitive surveillance footage—even if the suspect says nothing, we can securely bring him to court. The case will stand solidly even without a confession.”

As they exchanged words, they arrived at the door of the interrogation room.

The dark door was tightly closed, exuding a solemn atmosphere.

Jiang An reached for the door handle, paused briefly, then pushed the door open and entered.

Inside the interrogation room, directly opposite, sat a man in a chair.

The man, with graying hair, sat with his head lowered, his hands placed neatly on his knees. Upon hearing the door open, he merely moved slightly without raising his head.

Once Jiang An was seated at the table, Zhang Biao turned slightly, ”Mr. Jiang, you’re in charge of the questioning, while I’ll take care of the records.”

Jiang An nodded slightly, his gaze shifting to the man sitting opposite, and began asking in a steady tone, ”Please state your name, age, address, and current occupation.”

The man displayed no resistance, his expression could even be described as calm.

He answered slowly, ”My name is Li Mountain, I’m 59 years old, live in Community 8, and usually farm at home.”

Jiang An watched him closely and continued, ”Do you know why we asked you to come here today?”

Li Mountain shook his head lightly, a hint of confusion appearing on his face, ”I truly don’t know.”

He paused, his eyes shifting between Jiang An and Zhang Biao, ”I was just doing farm work at home today when some officers suddenly came and brought me here.”

”Officer... I consider myself a law-abiding person, I shouldn’t have committed any crime, right?”

Hearing this, Jiang An’s eyes narrowed, then he responded solemnly, ”You’re mistaken, this question shouldn’t be answered by me, but faced by yourself.”

He paused slightly, pointing to the conspicuous slogan on the interrogation room wall, ”Look at what it says on that wall, ’Leniency to those who confess, severity to those who resist.’

”These eight words are not hung here for decoration, but a principle that everyone who enters this room must confront.”

Following his direction, Li Mountain turned his head, his gaze lingering on those bold red characters for a moment.

The room fell into a brief silence, the air growing heavier with his gaze.

Seeing Li Mountain remain silent, Jiang An continued, ”You may not know, but many people have entered this room, each with their own story.”

”But before they officially undergo examination, we always provide a buffer period.”

”This time isn’t idle waiting, but an opportunity—a final chance to voluntarily confess and explain.”

”You must understand, in criminal cases, the sentence is not based solely on the act itself.”

”For example, a crime that may warrant a three-to-ten-year sentence, besides the severity of the crime, the attitude of the accused towards confessing is also crucial.”

”With a good attitude and cooperation in the investigation, sincerely repenting, the sentence may be at the minimum; but if one refuses to confess and attempts to cover up, the court might impose a severe sentence, with the term potentially doubling to nine or ten years.”

Here he paused again, his gaze settling on Li Mountain’s face, ”In this case, we still want to give you a chance.”

”I hope you can seize this opportunity well, and clearly explain everything you’ve done—no matter how big or small.”

”As long as you confess truthfully and cooperate with the investigation, we can advocate for leniency based on your plea to the prosecution and court.”

Jiang An finished speaking, quietly watching Li Mountain, awaiting his response.

Now, only the rhythmic ticking of the wall clock could be heard in the interrogation room.

After the opening exchange, Li Mountain, sitting opposite, fell into a long silence.

His eyebrows were tightly knitted, as if struggling intensely within.

This heavy expression prompted Jiang An and Zhang Biao behind the interrogation table to exchange a glance, both catching a fleeting trace of surprise in each other’s eyes.

Could it be that a breakthrough is coming so soon?

This was much smoother than they had anticipated.

At this moment, Zhang Biao’s hand holding the pen involuntarily paused.

Having worked this job for many years, recording the statements of various suspects, he rarely encountered someone so cooperative without repeated questioning.
