The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

”How could I possibly kill someone over a little competition?”

”I’m not ignorant of the law. I have a family to take care of; even if we make a bit less money each year, it would never lead me to murder!”

”Besides, I heard that Zhao Gang’s family died very tragically. It wasn’t just him; the whole family met with disaster. The murderer was insane enough to burn the scene.”

”Just thinking about it sends chills down my spine. How could I ever do such a thing?”

Wan closely watched Zhang Qiang’s expression and gestures as he spoke.

From his reactions and demeanor throughout the interrogation, Zhang Qiang didn’t seem to show any obvious signs of lying. Every defense he made seemed genuine and urgent.

Meanwhile, in Interrogation Room 2, Qin Feng was also conducting his interrogation.

Sitting across from him was the infamous village bachelor Li Guang, a man who had been punished for harassing female villagers on multiple occasions.

Unlike Zhang Qiang, Li Guang didn’t exhibit any nervousness upon entering the interrogation room. Instead, he seemed quite at ease, clearly familiar with the environment—almost like a ”regular.”

The interrogation began, and the police went straight to the point: ”Li Guang, do you know why we summoned you today?”

Li Guang absentmindedly rubbed his bald head and grinned, ”I’m quite familiar with this place. It’s not my first time here.”

”But I honestly can’t guess why you’re looking for me this time.”

”Is it because another woman has complained about me?”

”This is just my little hobby. At most, you’ll detain me for a few more days.”

”Handle it however you see fit.”

Hearing this, Qin Feng was stunned, lightning striking through him, freezing him in place.

Years of interrogation experience flashed through his mind—during interrogations, the most challenging people are those like Li Guang, who don’t care about punishment.

If someone isn’t even afraid of being detained and openly admits to their crimes, conventional interrogation strategies will have little effect.

Such people often have a strong psychological defense, making it difficult to break through.

Qin Feng took a deep breath, quickly adjusting his strategy.

He leaned forward slightly, his tone suddenly shifting, ”We won’t discuss your harassment cases today.”

”Let’s talk about something else—a murder.”

”Murder?”

Li Guang suddenly looked up, his previously indifferent eyes now focused, his face filled with shock and disbelief.

”What murder are you talking about?”

”I may have some bad habits and like to harass women, but I swear to heaven, I have never harmed anyone!”

”I may push my luck with my words, and at most have some slight physical contact, but I’ve never crossed the line!”

Qin Feng calmly observed the intense changes in Li Guang’s emotions and continued speaking, ”We will, of course, verify this.”

”But as of now, all clues point to you, and we suspect you are related to the gruesome family murder that happened last night.”

”Family murder?”

Li Guang’s pupils suddenly shrank, and his voice involuntarily raised by octaves.

”Are you talking about... the Wu Family fire?”

As soon as the words left his mouth, he jumped from his chair as if on fire, his hands shaking violently, his words becoming incoherent.

”No! Impossible!”

”I had nothing to do with that! You can’t just pin this crime on me!”

”I admit I have some issues, but murder and arson? That’s a capital crime! I absolutely didn’t do it!”

Qin Feng focused intently on every change in Li Guang’s expression.

Li Guang, who just moments ago had a nonchalant attitude, was now panicked, beads of sweat forming on his forehead, genuine fear in his eyes.

Is this all just an elaborate act, or is he truly uninvolved in the case?

Qin Feng exchanged a knowing glance with the officer beside him. They nodded subtly in understanding.

Then Qin Feng, in a steady and undeniable tone, continued to question, ”The evidence we currently have shows you are connected to this case.”

”Now please explain truthfully—where were you last night and what were you doing?”

”I’ll tell! I’ll tell you everything!”

”Last night, around six or seven o’clock, I had a bowl of beef noodles at Old Mr. Liu’s noodle shop by the village entrance—the owner can vouch for me; I’m a regular there, and we even chatted a bit.”

”After eating, I went straight home, locked myself inside, and out of sheer boredom, I watched those kinds of small websites...”

”I know it’s not something to be proud of, but being a bachelor, what else is there to do at night?”

”Later, I got an itch and thought about sneaking a peek at the woman next door taking a shower, but her place was pitch black, and no one was home!”

”I waited by the window for a long time and had to slink back to my room in the end.”

”Around eleven o’clock, I went to bed and slept.”

”I didn’t wake up until around eight in the morning, only to hear people outside clamoring that something had happened at Zhao Gang’s house, a fire had killed people!”

Suddenly, Qin Feng slammed the table, his voice stern, ”Watch your attitude! We are conducting a serious interrogation now, and we have no time for your nonsense!”

”Honestly account for your whereabouts last night!”

”Officer, I’m telling the truth!”

”If you don’t believe me, you can check my computer records; there must be playback records for last night, with precise times and all! I really was just watching that before I went to sleep...”

”Do you know the Zhao Gang family?”

”Yes, of course... we live in the same village.”

His voice suddenly dropped, his gaze slightly evasive, ”His wife... was quite attractive.”

”I admit I was a bit rude to her before... once at the village entrance, I accidentally... touched her a couple of times.”

”But I really couldn’t control myself, and I know I was wrong!”

”I hope her spirit in the sky doesn’t blame me? What happened to her really has nothing to do with me!”

He became increasingly agitated, ”If you want to arrest me for what happened before, I’ll accept it.”

”At most, it’ll be fifteen days in detention, and then I’m out again? I’m used to it anyway...”

”Oh? You even know exactly how many days you would be detained?”

Qin Feng sneered.

”I’ve been in and out several times... to be honest, it’s quite nice inside.”

”They provide food and shelter, people to talk to, and a structured schedule.”

”Outside, I have to cook for myself and have no one to talk to...”

Qin Feng’s temples throbbed.

He had interrogated many people, all eager to get out as soon as possible, yet this was the first time he had encountered someone who thought staying in detention was more comfortable than being outside.

What kind of mindset is this?

.....

After two hours, the interrogation still hadn’t made any progress.

The atmosphere in the hallway outside the interrogation room was somewhat stagnant.

Wan silently passed a cigarette to Qin Feng, neither of them spoke, just leaned against the wall, quietly smoking.

Amid the swirling smoke, the fatigue seemed to slightly fade away.

It wasn’t until the cigarette burned out that Wan stubbed it out and spoke, ”Let’s go report to Mr. Jiang.”

”This case probably needs to be reconsidered and reorganized.”

Ten minutes later, they arrived at Mr. Jiang’s office door.

The door was open, revealing the bright light inside.

It was already night, and most of the police station building had fallen into darkness, with only the few offices of the criminal investigation team still lit, especially Mr. Jiang’s office, which seemed never to turn off its lights.

They knocked on the door lightly, and a steady ”Come in” came from inside.

Upon entering, Mr. Jiang was sitting behind his desk, reviewing documents.

He looked up and saw the weariness that couldn’t be hidden on their faces.

He actually had a sense of the progress of the interrogation earlier—that’s why he didn’t participate personally.

On the one hand, he wanted to give Wan and Qin Feng more opportunities to gain experience. On the other hand, these two suspects weren’t directly related to the case.

He got up and walked toward the sofa, gesturing for them to sit as well. ”Thank you for your hard work!”

”The tasks have been heavy lately, the pressure great, it’s not been easy.”

Mr. Jiang’s tone was calm but carried concern.

Wan gave a wry smile, rubbing his strained neck, and said, ”It’s not the hard work that’s troubling, it’s just after all the effort, we still haven’t found many valuable clues.”

Qin Feng added, ”Both individuals are tight-lipped, unwilling to admit any connection to the case.”

”Are we stuck in this situation now?”

Mr. Jiang was silent for a moment, his gaze steady as he looked at them, slowly saying, ”Actually, this outcome—doesn’t surprise me.”
