She Lives without Regret in This Life

Chapter 787: Chapter 823: Introduction of the Object

Meng Xingzhi was truly an elder and leader whose demeanor and cultivation were beyond reproach. On the way back, Meng Xingzhi showed no airs at all and repeatedly apologized to Sheng Ning and Chen Huaying. He first dropped Sheng Ning off at the General Union, worrying that she might not be able to get in and even had his assistant personally escort her through the gate before taking Chen Huaying back to the General Union Courtyard.

He felt obliged to personally visit and offer an apology since his wife had imposed such a junior upon him.

“Thank you, thank you!” After Sheng Ning thanked him repeatedly, Meng Xingzhi’s assistant finally left. She didn’t return to her dorm; instead, she first went to the communication room where there was a phone she could use.

The old man in the communication room had been gesturing to her from a distance, “Girl, girl!”

“Hello.”

“Where is your husband, girl?”

“Uh…” No wonder he was so enthusiastic today; he was asking about the Living Yama. “He’s busy.”

“Okay… okay!” The old man had initially thought Xu Qigang had come and was quite pleased, but he didn’t show up at all. “You want to make a phone call, right? Just go inside yourself.”

“Thank you, old man.” Sheng Ning had been back from the War Wolf Rescue Team for two days now. She had agreed that the Living Yama would come to see her today, but there had been no news so far.

Once the call went through, an unfamiliar voice answered.

“Hello, I’d like to speak with Captain Xu.”

“May I know who’s calling?”

Without thinking, Sheng Ning blurted out, “I’m his wife.”

There was a ten-second silence on the other end, and then Zhou Hong’s voice came through, “Sister-in-law, this is Zhou Hong.”

“Hello, Zhou Hong, is Captain Xu there?”

“Captain’s not here; he’s out on a mission.”

“What? He’s out on another mission?” Hearing about Xu Qigang being on a mission made Sheng Ning anxious, mainly because of the fright from his last mission in Country S.

“It’s a regular mission, nothing to worry about.” Zhou Hong quickly explained.

“Really?”

“Yes! It’s true. Don’t worry, sister-in-law. You and our captain really have a great relationship.” On the phone, Zhou Hong said enviously, “Sister-in-law, when are you going to set me up with someone? I’m still single!”

“…” Sheng Ning’s mind raced; she had never played matchmaker for anyone.

Usually, Captain Xu kept his wife tightly hidden, and Zhou Hong seldom had a chance. Who wouldn’t want to marry a girl from the Song and Dance Troupe? They could sing and dance and were pretty and lively.

In fact, Zhou Hong’s family was quite well-off, and his mother had always been busy trying to set him up with someone, but he had declined all her attempts. He found all the relatives she introduced to be annoying.

“Sister-in-law, I’d be happy with someone from your General Union Dance Troupe! That girl who plays Rose is quite nice.”

Sheng Ning was surprised that Zhou Hong had taken a liking to Wu Youli; she was the most well-behaved girl in her eyes, and anyone who married her would wake up laughing from their dreams. Sheng Ning didn’t have any younger brothers, but if she did, or even an older brother, she would have been eager to set them up.

“Sister-in-law?” Zhou Hong prompted on the phone when he heard no response, his heart beating wildly. Surely his sister-in-law hadn’t seen through his intentions?

Zhou Hong had always been clueless about love until he accompanied his mother to the National Grand Theater to watch Blood Rose, and that was when he became smitten with Wu Youli. He suffered from insomnia the night he went back. The next day, he approached Xu Qi, only to be flatly rejected.

“My wife is very busy; she has no time.” Those were Xu Qi’s exact words, and they had infuriated Zhou Hong so much he felt like spitting blood.

“Then I’ll ask Wu Youli what she thinks!” Sheng Ning found it hard to decline, so she agreed.
