She Lives without Regret in This Life

Chapter 764: Chapter 797 Father Shen’s Warning

Father Shen sat on the sofa, looking at the photo above the table. Although this photo was not as filthy as the last one, it was clear from the time and background that it was taken at night in Bai Oulan’s dormitory.

With this ironclad evidence, even if he had reach across the heavens, his son’s reputation was ruined.

“Stay put for a while,” he instructed on the phone, “I’ll send you away to another place. Once the scandal blows over, you can come back!” At this point, Father Shen didn’t bother to scold him anymore. He simply admonished, “You need to behave yourself, and you’re not to do anything against Meng Ping. Otherwise, I’ll be the first one to not let you off.”

“Yes!” Shen Yu clenched his teeth in agreement. He had always been prudent and measured in his actions, with his own vision and plans. As such, his father rarely commanded him to do anything, but when Father Shen issued a serious order, he had to obey.

Not even the slightest bit of rebellion was permissible, and he also realized that sometimes, indeed, the older, the wiser his father was compared to him.

“Thank you!” Shen Yu respectfully apologized, “For smoothing over this matter for me.”

Father Shen paused for a long time on the phone before finally saying, “Shen Yu, you’re my son and the hope of the Shen Family. But to your grandfather, our family’s hope doesn’t rest solely on you. Thus, in your actions, there must be restraint and measure. A grown man like yourself and yet you’ve stumbled over Bai Oulan. You’ve disappointed your grandfather greatly this time. I’ll handle this matter for you, but there will absolutely be no next time. If you continue to act without any concerns, don’t blame the family for abandoning you.”

“…Yes, Dad, I understand.”

Shen Yu thought his father would hang up the call, but suddenly, Father Shen asked unexpectedly, “Does Meng Fan’s death have anything to do with you?”

“What?” Shen Yu shivered all over, his body tensing up into a straight line. “What do you mean by that, Dad? How could it possibly be related to me?”

“As long as it’s not related to you, that’s good. I certainly don’t hope that the heir I’ve personally groomed turns out to be a disaster.” Father Shen had been stern throughout his life. Although being born into such a family afforded him many conveniences, he had never lost his sense of duty as a comrade, not for a single day.

The family precepts of the Shen Family were clear: It was okay to have minor faults, but one must never lose the integrity, conscience, and professional competence that a comrade should have.

Once these were lost, the fall of the Shen Family would not be far off.

“Dad, you’re being too harsh,” Shen Yu said, cold sweat beading on his forehead, secretly relieved he didn’t live in the old family house. If he had been standing in front of his father right then, his facade would have been seen through for sure.

His family knew nothing of what he had done. He believed his actions had been flawless, leaving no clues for anyone to find, but if his father were to investigate, he would surely discover something.

After all, many of the people at his disposal were originally transferred to him by his father.

“Dad, wasn’t Meng Fan killed in a rescue operation? Why bring up such talk now?”

“I don’t know!” Father Shen’s tone was strict, tinged with a hint of concern, “I just got the news that there’s more to Meng Fan’s death. Su Jiang, not giving up, has been investigating for the past two years, and now he’s onto something.”

“What’s he onto?” Shen Yu nervously moved the phone farther away, swallowed quietly, then brought the phone back to his ear.

“I’m still looking into the lead! It seems someone deliberately hid it from me, so it’s still unclear.” This was the real reason why Father Shen suspected his own son. He had lived an upright life and wasn’t afraid of scrutiny. At their level of society, information was shared, and there was usually a mutual respect maintained.
