She Lives without Regret in This Life

Chapter 769: Chapter 802: What’s the Background?

Beyond the Northern District to the north lay a primordial forest that no one had set foot in for years. Past the forest, crossing Heihe River, you’d enter the national borders of “S” country. The Heihe checkpoint was the last line of defense of the Northern District. The comrades stationed here lived a life of hardship, yet bore the heavy responsibility of guarding the border.

Xu Qigang, alongside Shangguan Tao, had tracked relentlessly all the way to Heihe without sleep, all traces of Chen Yingjie had long disappeared. To be precise, the trail had been lost by the time Shangguan Tao had reported back.

Throughout the journey, Xu Qigang had been following the tracks of scarface. Relying on his extensive tracking experience and astonishing intuition, he clung to the trail closely.

“Captain, who exactly is this scarface? How can he evade your tracking?” Shangguan Tao asked, panting heavily as his clothes were soaked with sweat.

When they had left the district, they had been dozens strong, but the immense burden and rapid pursuit had gradually left many behind. In the end, only Shangguan Tao could keep up with Xu Qigang’s pace. Now, Shangguan Tao felt he too might soon have to halt his own pursuit.

This made Shangguan Tao somewhat dejected, praying in his heart that nothing must happen to Chen Yingjie. If something really happened to him, the blow to the Captain would be too severe. The Young Chairman and Living Yama had once been the best of brothers, the most compatible duo—whether it was speed, endurance, skills, understanding, or overall strength. When they took action, they were unbeaten in any challenge. After the Young Chairman’s death, only Chen Yingjie, under the Captain’s rigorous training, barely managed to keep up with his pace.

If something were to happen to Chen Yingjie… the consequences were beyond what Shangguan Tao could bear to think.

Usually in the rescue team, everyone liked to tease Chen Yingjie because he was the youngest and held a unique position; everyone envied him and liked to make fun of him. Actually, everyone valued Chen Yingjie highly, his position in the War Wolf Rescue Team was second only to Xu Qigang, the Captain.

Even Zhou Hong, the administrative director, couldn’t compare to the importance of Chen Yingjie.

Xu Qigang squatted opposite him, his demeanor calm, his eyes determined, breathing so even it was nearly inaudible. This starkly contrasted with Shangguan Tao’s heavy breathing, and not a single drop of sweat was on his face.

The best comrades could regulate their breathing, heartbeat, and body metabolism to perfectly adapt to external environments and intense physical exertion.

One should know that the journey and chase demanded extremely high physical fitness, and a strong man would struggle to keep moving without any breaks. Shangguan Tao, while being the director of the rescue, was ranked among the top ten in overall quality in the War Wolf Rescue Team. Even though he was skilled, at this moment, he felt utterly weak compared to Xu Qigang.

“A once-infamous hired soldier warlord, I heard of his notoriety during the Southern Border campaign. But due to being in different locations, we never clashed,” Xu Qigang said, his eyes narrowing slightly, something flashing briefly through his mind. The Southern Border campaign, besides our own country, had seen participation from mercenaries from three other countries. Scarface was one of the leaders of the mercenaries, infamous and involved in some of the world’s biggest wars, known for his brutal methods and rich experience.

He hadn’t considered that Shen Yu would dare to collaborate with scarface, a fact that, if discovered, meant certain conviction. The more Xu Qigang thought about it, the calmer he became, his mind racing faster.
