BRUSHSTROKES OF REVENGE

Friday evening descended over Greendale in a shimmer of gold and glass. The city pulsed with anticipation, every upper‑class socialite preparing for the Maxine Charity Gala—the event that opened doors to power, prestige, and whispered alliances. Invitations had been fought over for weeks; tonight, only the chosen few would walk through the gilded doors of the Grand Aurelia Hotel.

Security was tighter than anyone could remember. Black‑suited guards lined the marble entrance, earpieces glinting under the chandeliers. Cameras flashed as limousines rolled up one after another, spilling out the city’s elite in a parade of silk, diamonds, and ambition.

Inside her suite, Mindy Wilson stood before the mirror, fastening the final clasp of her earrings. The blood‑red gown she wore clung to her like liquid fire, its satin folds catching the light with every breath she took. The color made her skin look almost translucent, her dark hair cascading in soft waves down her back. She looked calm, but her pulse thrummed beneath the surface.

She knew exactly what awaited her tonight.

Nervousness fluttered in her chest, but excitement burned brighter.

Behind her, Wade adjusted his cufflinks, the black‑and‑white tuxedo fitting him with effortless precision. He caught her gaze in the mirror and gave a small nod.

”We need to be alert,” she said quietly.

He didn’t ask why. He never did.

”I know,” he replied simply.

That was enough. Between them, words were rarely necessary.

At the Hawthorne Mansion, Missy Hawthorne twirled before her mirror, admiring the sea‑green gown that shimmered like a mermaid’s tail. The necklace around her throat sparkled under the vanity lights, and her makeup was flawless—soft, innocent, deceptive.

She was going to the gala as Layton Knight’s plus one.

After Layton’s public announcement naming her the chief designer for the upcoming Maxine Portfolio, the whispers that once mocked her had quieted. No one dared laugh now. She had clawed her way back into the spotlight, and tonight, she intended to shine.

Downstairs, Raymond and Emily were also preparing. Their invitations had arrived that morning, embossed with gold. Emily had smiled when she saw them—an opportunity to mingle, to rebuild connections, to remind everyone that the Hawthornes were still relevant.

Raymond, however, had been quieter than usual. He hadn’t spoken Mindy’s name aloud since the competition, but her absence lingered in every silence.

Layton Knight adjusted his tie in the rearview mirror of his car. The black tuxedo fit him perfectly, every line sharp, every movement controlled. He was on his way to pick up Missy.

Beside him, his assistant Mike fidgeted in his seat, glancing at him several times before finally speaking.

”Mr. Knight,” he began cautiously, ”shouldn’t you have asked Miss Mindy to be your plus one tonight?”

Layton’s hand paused on the steering wheel.

Mike continued, voice low but firm. ”Your relationship with her is already strained. If she finds out you went with Miss Hawthorne again, she might misunderstand.”

Layton’s jaw tightened. He hadn’t thought about it that way. He had never thought about these things before, How would Mindy react, he never cared.

Whenever Missy asked for something, he agreed without hesitation. This morning, she had walked into his office, smiling sweetly, and asked if she could accompany him to the gala since she was the chief designer for the Maxine project. He had said yes automatically, without a second thought.

Now, the realization settled like a stone in his chest.

He had never once asked Mindy what she wanted.

”I’ll talk to her,” he said finally. ”I’ll explain.”

Mike didn’t respond. He knew it wouldn’t matter. Mindy Wilson wasn’t the kind of woman who listened to explanations anymore. Not from Layton Knight.

Silence filled the car until Layton spoke again. ”Did you investigate those photos?”

Mike nodded. ”Yes, sir. All of them were real. They were taken by Missy’s friend, Sheila. The sender was Miss Hawthorne herself.”

Layton’s brows furrowed. He said nothing.

Mike only shook his head, disappointment flickering across his face.

The Grand Aurelia Hotel gleamed like a palace. Crystal chandeliers spilled light across the marble floors, and the air hummed with the scent of champagne and expensive perfume. Reporters crowded the entrance, cameras flashing as each luxury car arrived.

When Layton and Missy stepped out of their vehicle, the crowd stirred.

Missy’s sea‑green gown shimmered under the lights, her smile perfectly rehearsed. Layton, in his black tuxedo, looked every inch the powerful CEO—tall, composed, devastatingly handsome.

The cameras turned toward them instantly.

”They look good together,” someone whispered. ”They’re really a couple. Mr. Knight never goes anywhere without Miss Hawthorne.”

Another voice cut through the murmurs. ”Didn’t she steal her step‑sister’s designs? The competition scandal?”

Missy’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second before she forced it back into place.

Layton heard the whispers too. He didn’t react, but his jaw tightened.

Then, a new car pulled up to the curb.

The crowd shifted.

And the air changed.

Mindy stepped out of the car, and for a moment, the world seemed to pause.

The blood‑red gown hugged her figure like it had been painted onto her skin, the slit at her leg revealing just enough to make every head turn. Her hair fell in soft waves, her lips tinted the same shade as her dress. She looked like a flame come to life—dangerous, mesmerizing, untouchable.

Wade followed, tall and composed in his tuxedo. Together, they looked like a scene from a dream—elegance and quiet power wrapped in human form.

The reporters who had been clustered around Layton and Missy turned instantly, cameras flashing in a frenzy.

”Mindy Wilson!” someone shouted. ”Over here!”

Questions flew, lights flared, and for a moment, even the murmurs about Missy vanished.

Mindy smiled politely, said nothing, and walked forward with Wade at her side.

Missy’s face darkened. Jealousy burned through her like acid. Even she couldn’t deny it—Mindy looked breathtaking. Every woman in the crowd turned to stare, some with envy, others with reluctant admiration. Every man’s gaze followed her.

Layton’s eyes found her instantly.

He couldn’t look away.

She was radiant, confident, utterly self‑possessed. The sight of other men watching her stirred something sharp and unfamiliar in his chest. Jealousy. Regret. Maybe both.

Wade offered his arm, and Mindy took it without hesitation. Together, they walked past Layton and Missy without a single glance.

Not even a flicker of acknowledgment.

Layton’s expression darkened.

She didn’t even look at me.

Inside the ballroom, the gala was in full swing. The chandeliers cast a golden glow over the crowd, the orchestra played a soft waltz, and laughter mingled with the clinking of glasses. Waiters moved gracefully through the throng, trays of champagne balanced effortlessly in their hands.

Mindy and Wade entered quietly, drawing subtle glances as they passed. She could feel the weight of the evening pressing around her—the hum of conversation, the glitter of ambition, the undercurrent of danger she alone knew was coming.

Then a familiar voice called out.

”Mindy!”

She turned, startled.

Ana Bose stood near the bar, waving cheerfully, her silver gown catching the light.

For a second, Mindy’s heart sank. She hadn’t wanted Ana here. Not tonight.

”What are you doing here?” she asked quickly.

Ana shrugged. ”My dad had something urgent, so he asked me to attend. Bose Media got an invite, so here I am.”

Mindy exhaled slowly. ”Okay. But listen—whatever happens tonight, don’t leave my side. Understand?”

Ana blinked, puzzled. ”What do you mean, whatever happens?”

”Just promise me.”

Ana studied her for a moment, then nodded. ”Fine. But don’t worry—even if you try, I won’t leave your side.”

That earned a small smile from Mindy.

Wade, standing beside them, said nothing. But he noticed the tension in Mindy’s shoulders, the way her eyes kept scanning the room. She knew something. He didn’t ask what. He trusted her instincts.

The evening unfolded in a blur of conversation and champagne. Businessmen laughed too loudly, women compared diamonds, and the orchestra’s music swelled and faded like a tide.

Raymond and Emily were there too, standing near the far end of the hall. They saw Mindy but didn’t approach. Raymond’s expression was unreadable; Emily’s smile was brittle.

Then, across the room, Missy spotted Mindy.

Her lips curved into a practiced smile.

”Layton,” she said sweetly, ”let’s go say hello.”

Layton hesitated, but Missy was already moving.

Ana noticed them first. Her eyes widened, and she leaned toward Mindy. ”Alert! Alert! Fake couple approaching,” she said in a robotic voice.

Mindy nearly choked on her drink. Wade laughed outright.

Missy and Layton heard it. Their smiles faltered.

But Missy recovered quickly, plastering on her sweetest expression. ”Sister,” she said brightly, ”I didn’t know you also got the invite.”

Mindy turned slowly, her smile razor‑sharp. ”If a thief like you is here, why can’t I?”

The words sliced through the air.

For a heartbeat, the entire circle around them went silent.

Then Ana sputtered her champagne, laughing uncontrollably. ”I wasn’t expecting that!”

Even Wade couldn’t suppress his grin.

Missy’s face darkened, her eyes glistening with manufactured tears. ”Sister, I’ve already apologized,” she said softly. ”I’m sorry for what I did, but everything I did was for the company.”

Mindy’s laugh was low and cold. ”Tell that lie to the fools who still believe you.”

Layton’s voice cut in, sharp with irritation. ”Mindy, enough. She already apologized for everything. Could you drop it?”

Mindy turned her gaze on him, calm and cutting. ”I’ll drop it when she stops calling me sister. It’s disgusting to hear a thief say that to me.”

Wade’s expression hardened. He had stayed silent for years, watching Layton treat Mindy like an afterthought. But not tonight.

Layton’s glare shifted to him, but Wade didn’t flinch.

Layton tried again, his tone softening. ”If you wanted to come tonight, I could have helped you.”

Mindy’s eyes flashed. ”Why would I ever ask you for anything? Who are you to me?”

Missy stepped forward quickly, voice trembling with false concern. ”Sist—Mindy, please don’t be angry with Layton. He didn’t know you wanted to come. If he did, he would have surely asked you.”

Mindy rolled her eyes. ”Let’s go,” she said to Ana and Wade. ”They’re not going to stop.”

She turned to leave, but Layton reached out and caught her wrist.

”Stop,” he said quietly. ”Let’s talk somewhere. I’ll explain.”

Mindy’s patience snapped. She pulled her hand free, her voice sharp. ”President Knight, why—”

And then she stopped.

Because the air in the ballroom shifted.

A ripple of silence spread through the ballroom as the doors at the far end opened.

Matthias King had arrived.

He stepped into the room like a shadow carved from steel—tall, broad‑shouldered, his presence commanding without effort. The black suit he wore was tailored to perfection, the crisp white shirt open just enough to reveal the edge of a tattoo curling up his throat. More ink traced the veins of his wrists, half hidden beneath his cuffs—symbols that whispered of danger and power.

But it was the mask that silenced the crowd.

A silver mask covered the right side of his face, from brow to cheek, gleaming under the chandeliers. It caught the light like a blade, reflecting the gold and crystal around him. Beneath it, faint scars disappeared into the collar of his shirt—the remnants of fire that had once tried to consume him.

He did not smile. He did not greet anyone. His expression, what little could be seen of it, was cold and unreadable.

Behind him walked two men.

Dante Mark, his right‑hand man, moved with the quiet precision of someone who had seen too much. Beside him, Zac Turner—his closest friend—matched his calm intensity. They flanked Matthias like shadows, their presence a silent warning.

The crowd parted instinctively as they entered. Conversations faltered. Cameras flashed. A few guests lowered their eyes, unwilling to meet the gaze of the man behind the mask.

Mindy’s breath caught.

In her past life, she had only seen him from afar—on television, in magazines, in the chaos of that night when everything went wrong. But seeing him now, alive, uninjured, radiating authority, sent a strange thrill through her chest.

He was exactly as she remembered.

And yet, more.

The silver mask gleamed where the fire had once scarred him. The same man who had pulled her from the water when her own husband had let her drown. The only person who had ever reached for her when everyone else turned away.

Her fingers tightened around her glass. Gratitude and determination tangled in her chest.

Layton followed her gaze, his expression darkening as he saw where her attention had gone. Missy noticed too; her lips curved into a knowing smirk.

Mindy didn’t glance at either of them again. Her eyes were fixed on Matthias King—the man whose fate she had come to change.

The orchestra shifted to a slower melody. Conversation resumed in cautious waves, but the energy in the room had changed. Everyone could feel it—the arrival of a man who didn’t belong to their world of polite smiles and whispered deals.

Matthias King was power in its rawest form.

He moved through the crowd with quiet confidence, acknowledging greetings with a curt nod. He spoke little, his voice low when he did, his words clipped and final. People stepped aside as he passed, some bowing their heads, others pretending not to stare.

No one dared to meet his eyes for long.

No one ever did.

Until her.

His gaze swept across the ballroom, scanning faces with detached precision. Then it stopped.

On her.

For a heartbeat, the noise, the lights, the crowd—all of it faded.

Mindy didn’t look away.

Her pulse quickened, but her expression remained calm. She met his gaze steadily, her lips curving into a polite, almost gentle smile.

She remembered the cold water closing over her head, the panic, the darkness—and then his hand pulling her up, his voice asking if she was all right. She remembered the silver mask, the burn marks, the way he had looked at her as if waiting for disgust. She had given him gratitude instead.

And now, across the glittering ballroom, she gave him the same smile.

Matthias King stared back.

He had expected the usual reaction—the flicker of pity, the quick glance away, the faint tightening of lips that betrayed discomfort. He had seen it all before. Every woman who looked at him saw the mask first, the scar beneath it, the reminder of what he had lost.

He had learned to expect mockery hidden behind courtesy, fear disguised as fascination.

But this woman didn’t flinch.

Her eyes didn’t dart to the mask. They didn’t widen with shock or narrow with curiosity. She simply looked at him—as if the silver and the scars were nothing more than part of the man standing before her.

And she smiled.

Not with flirtation. Not with pity. Just quiet acknowledgment.

Something shifted in his chest, sharp and unfamiliar.

He didn’t look away.

For the first time in years, Matthias King found himself unable to break eye contact. The ballroom blurred around them, the music fading into a distant hum. Her gaze was steady, unafraid, and it unsettled him more than any threat ever had.

He felt the faintest pull—an echo of something he couldn’t name. Warmth, perhaps. Or recognition.

He didn’t believe in either.

Yet he couldn’t deny the strange calm that settled over him as she held his gaze.

Mindy’s smile remained polite, unwavering. She didn’t move, didn’t speak. She simply met his eyes as if she had been waiting for this moment.

Neither of them looked away.

The silence between them stretched, invisible but palpable.

To everyone else, it was nothing—a fleeting glance across a crowded room. But to them, it was something else entirely.

Matthias’s expression didn’t change, but his eyes lingered longer than they should have. The coldness in them softened, just slightly, before he forced it back.

He turned his head at last, breaking the connection, but the echo of her smile stayed with him.

He didn’t understand it.

But he couldn’t forget it.

Across the room, Layton’s jaw tightened. He had seen the exchange—the way Mindy’s attention had shifted, the way Matthias King’s gaze had lingered. He didn’t understand what had passed between them, but he felt it: the spark, the shift, the invisible thread that had pulled her away from him completely.

Missy saw it too. Her smirk deepened, genuine for the first time that night.

Because while Layton’s eyes darkened with jealousy, Mindy’s gaze had already found another man.

The man who would change everything.

The man who, in another life, had fallen—and whom she had come tonight to save.

Matthias King moved on, his mask catching the light as he disappeared into the crowd. But his thoughts lingered on the woman who hadn’t looked away.

Mindy exhaled slowly, her heart steadying.

This was it—the night she had been waiting for.

The night she would rewrite fate.

The chandeliers glittered above them, the orchestra played on, and the night stretched ahead—beautiful, dangerous, and waiting to explode.

The Gala had only just begun.
