BRUSHSTROKES OF REVENGE

The Bright Auditorium had never been so still. The air itself seemed to hold its breath as the judges finished their scoring for the first round. The host, radiant beneath the stage lights, stepped forward with a practiced smile that carried easily through the hall.

”Ladies and gentlemen,” she announced, her voice bright and clear, ”the results for Round One are now ready.”

A ripple of anticipation swept through the audience. The massive LED screen behind her flickered to life, bathing the stage in a soft golden glow.

Every contestant instinctively straightened, hearts pounding, breaths caught somewhere between hope and dread.

”Round One Theme,” the host continued, pausing for effect. ”Bloom.”

The rankings began to appear one by one.

”Fifth Place...”

”Fourth Place...”

Each name drew polite applause, the kind that filled the air but carried no real excitement. Then came the third.

”Third Place—Lucy Wale, Liora Fashion.”

Lucy smiled, her confidence unshaken. ”Not bad,” she murmured, her voice carrying just enough for her team to hear.

”Second Place—Adam Gray, Wesley Design.”

Adam nodded once, calm and composed, though a faint flicker of disappointment crossed his eyes.

Only one name remained.

The host’s smile widened, her tone turning theatrical. ”And the highest score of Round One—the only contestant to receive a near-perfect score from every judge—with a total score of...”

She paused, letting the silence stretch until it trembled.

”One hundred points!”

The auditorium erupted.

Gasps, applause, cheers—sound crashed through the hall like a wave breaking against stone. The LED screen flashed in brilliant gold.

MINDY WILSON – LUXT DESIGN.

For a heartbeat, no one moved. Then the applause doubled, thunderous and unrestrained. Even those who had mocked her earlier on the livestream found themselves clapping, swept up in the sheer force of the moment.

Jonathan Harper, the most feared critic in the industry, actually smiled. Selena Marwin’s eyes gleamed with admiration. Even Alexander Bright, who rarely showed emotion, lifted his hands in quiet applause.

Inside the Wilson mansion, Emma Wilson pressed a trembling hand to her lips. Tears glimmered in her eyes as she whispered, ”My granddaughter...”

Beside her, Jasper Wilson smiled, pride softening his usually stern features. ”I told you,” he said quietly. ”She carries Maria’s fire.”

Back in the auditorium, Mindy stood beneath the lights, calm and composed, though her heart beat like a drum. The applause washed over her, but she didn’t bow or preen. She simply smiled—a quiet, knowing smile that said everything.

She had arrived.

Across the hall, the Hawthorne family looked as though lightning had struck them.

Raymond stared blankly at the scoreboard. ”One hundred?” he muttered, as if the number itself were an insult.

Drake leaned forward, disbelief etched across his face. ”How?”

Jagger frowned, his jaw tightening. ”Since when does she know fashion design?”

For a long moment, no one spoke. The silence between them was thick, brittle. Then Emily’s voice broke it, soft and measured, the kind of tone that sounded harmless but carried poison beneath the surface.

”I think,” she began gently, ”Emma must have helped Mindy.”

All eyes turned toward her.

Her expression was serene, her voice calm, almost sympathetic. ”It would be impossible for Mindy to suddenly become this talented. After all, Mother Emma is one of the greatest designers of her generation.”

Raymond’s shoulders relaxed slightly. ”That makes sense,” he said slowly, as if clinging to the explanation like a lifeline.

Drake scoffed. ”So that’s it. She’s borrowing Grandma’s reputation. How shameless.”

Jagger folded his arms, his tone cold. ”I knew it. She can’t possibly do something like this by herself.”

Missy lowered her head, her voice trembling just enough to sound pitiful. ”I just hope Grandma wasn’t forced...”

The effect was immediate. Sympathy flickered across Raymond’s face. Emily reached out, touching Missy’s arm with maternal concern.

None of them noticed the nearby designers exchanging uneasy glances.

Lucy Wale frowned. ”Forced?” she murmured under her breath.

Adam Gray, seated a few rows away, glanced toward Mindy. He didn’t speak, but his eyes said enough. He didn’t believe Emily’s story for a second.

Online, the livestream chat exploded.

”Emma Wilson helped?”

”I guess that explains everything.”

”No wonder she scored so high.”

But slowly, another current began to form beneath the noise.

”Wait... didn’t Mindy explain her design herself?”

”The explanation sounded spontaneous.”

”Could someone really memorize something like that?”

”I don’t know... something feels off.”

The debate grew, voices clashing in real time.

Exactly as Emily intended.

A seed of doubt had been planted. And doubt, once sown, had a way of growing roots.

The break ended, and the host returned to the stage, her voice bright once more. ”Contestants, please prepare for Round Two.”

The LED screen shifted, revealing the new theme in bold letters.

Metamorphosis.

The audience erupted in applause. Transformation. Growth. Rebirth. The perfect theme for a competition already brimming with tension.

Designers hurried back to their stations. Fabric scattered across tables, scissors flashed, needles danced. The air filled with the rhythmic hum of creation. Every movement carried urgency, every breath the weight of ambition.

Three hours passed in a blur of color and sound.

When the presentations began, the energy in the hall shifted again. One by one, designers stepped onto the stage, each unveiling their interpretation of transformation. Some dazzled. Some faltered. The judges watched with practiced neutrality, their pens moving in quiet rhythm.

Then came the announcement everyone had been waiting for.

”The defending champion—Miss Missy Hawthorne.”

Missy glided onto the stage, her gown shimmering beneath the lights. It was undeniably beautiful—layers of silk and crystal that caught the light like butterfly wings. She smiled, poised and confident.

”My design,” she began, ”is called Butterfly Queen.”

Polite applause followed.

”My inspiration comes from butterflies,” she continued. ”They’re beautiful because of their colorful wings. They represent elegance and beauty.”

Her voice was smooth, her gestures graceful. She spoke for another minute, describing the gown’s details, the symbolism of transformation, the delicate balance of fragility and strength.

When she finished, she bowed gracefully. The audience applauded again.

The gown was exquisite. But something was missing.

Jonathan Harper frowned slightly, his pen hovering above the score sheet. Selena Marwin exchanged a glance with Alexander Bright. Even Erwin Bright adjusted his glasses, his expression unreadable.

None of them spoke, but the silence between them said enough.

The explanation didn’t fit the gown. The words were polished, but hollow. It was as though the dress carried emotions the designer herself couldn’t understand.

From LUXT’s station, Mindy watched quietly, a faint smile curving her lips. She saw it—the flicker of doubt in the judges’ eyes. The first crack in Missy’s perfect façade.

Exactly as planned.

Online, the livestream divided once again.

”Beautiful!”

”Champion!”

”Missy never disappoints!”

But beneath the flood of praise came quieter voices.

”The explanation felt... too shallow?”

”It doesn’t really match the design.”

”Something’s off.”

Almost immediately, Missy’s fans attacked.

”You don’t understand fashion!”

”Stop being jealous!”

”Missy is amazing!”

The comments flew like sparks, igniting arguments across the feed. The audience was split, the tension palpable even through the screen.

Finally, the host smiled, her voice rising above the noise. ”Our final presentation—LUXT Design, Chief Designer, Mindy Wilson.”

The lights dimmed.

A hush fell over the auditorium.

Mindy stepped onto the stage, her movements unhurried, her presence commanding. Behind her, assistants wheeled out the gown—a breathtaking creation of crimson silk and gold embroidery that shimmered like living fire.

Gasps rippled through the crowd.

The gown glowed beneath the spotlight, every thread alive with motion. The golden patterns flowed across the fabric like flames caught mid-dance. It was bold, unapologetic, impossible to ignore.

Missy’s smile vanished. Emily’s fingers tightened around her clutch. For one brief, haunting second, she wasn’t looking at Mindy at all. She was looking at Maria.

Raymond froze. The confidence, the elegance—it was all too familiar. The woman on that stage reminded him painfully of the one he had once loved and lost.

Mindy turned toward the audience, her expression calm, her voice steady.

”My design,” she said softly, ”is called Phoenix Veil.”

She rested one hand gently against the gown, her fingers brushing the fabric as though it were alive.

”Many people believe that transformation happens overnight,” she began. ”It doesn’t.”

The hall fell silent.

”Sometimes,” she continued, ”you have to lose everything first. You have to watch your old self disappear. You have to burn. Sometimes, you even have to burn yourself.”

Her voice was calm, but every word carried weight.

”Only then can something stronger be born. This gown isn’t about becoming beautiful. It’s about surviving the fire—and still choosing to rise.”

She paused, her gaze sweeping across the audience.

”The phoenix doesn’t ask the world for permission,” she said softly. ”It simply spreads its wings.”

Silence.

Complete, reverent silence.

Every word mirrored the gown—the fire, the rebirth, the defiance.

Jonathan Harper’s lips curved into a rare smile. Selena’s eyes shimmered. Even Alexander Bright nodded, his expression one of quiet respect.

Then, somewhere in the audience, a single pair of hands began to clap.

Another joined.

Then another.

Within seconds, the entire auditorium was on its feet.

A standing ovation.

The applause thundered through the hall, echoing off the walls, rising higher and higher until it became a roar. Even designers from rival companies stood, their admiration genuine.

Backstage, Ana jumped to her feet, shouting over the noise. ”That’s my best friend!”

Layla clapped until her palms stung. Wade smiled, pride softening his usually composed expression. He looked at Mindy the way an older brother might look at a sister who had finally found her wings.

On stage, Mindy bowed once, gracefully, her eyes calm. The applause washed over her like a tide.

She had burned.

And she had risen.

Among the audience, Layton Knight stood motionless. His gaze never left her.

He didn’t know why, but her words—You have to burn first—lodged deep in his chest.

It didn’t sound like inspiration.

It sounded like confession.

He realized, with a strange ache, that she wasn’t speaking about design at all. She was speaking about herself.

Thirty minutes later, the judges withdrew to calculate the combined scores. The host announced that the results would be revealed shortly. Contestants began returning to their stations, the air buzzing with nervous energy.

As Mindy walked through the backstage corridor, she caught sight of a familiar figure.

Steven Marsh stood beside Adam Gray, his expression serious. Adam was speaking in a low voice, his tone clipped, controlled.

Mindy’s lips curved into a faint smile.

Good.

He had listened.

The future had already begun to change.

She continued walking, her heels clicking softly against the marble floor.

Then a hand caught her wrist.

”Mindy.”

She stopped, turning slowly.

Layton Knight stood before her, his expression unreadable.

”We need to talk,” he said.

Mindy sighed, her patience thinning. ”What now? Aren’t you supposed to be supporting your sweetheart? Why are you following me?”

”I’m not here for Missy,” he said quietly. ”I’m here for you.”

Mindy laughed. Not a polite laugh, but a sharp, incredulous one that turned heads.

”President Knight,” she said, her tone dripping with amusement, ”are you stupid, or do you think I am?”

His jaw tightened.

”You arrived this morning,” she continued. ”You’ve been standing at Missy’s station the entire day. And now, suddenly, you remember I exist? No one would believe that.”

The title again—President Knight. Formal. Distant.

”Why do you keep calling me that?” he demanded. ”Can’t you call me by my name?”

Before she could answer, a familiar voice cut through the tension.

”Sister!”

Missy hurried toward them, her heels clicking rapidly against the floor. She slipped between them with practiced ease, looping both hands around Layton’s arm. His body stiffened instantly.

”Your designs today were really beautiful,” she said sweetly. ”I was just wondering... did Grandma Emma help you?”

Her voice wasn’t loud, but it carried. Just loud enough for the nearby designers to hear.

The whispers began immediately.

”Did she just say Emma Wilson helped?”

”So Mindy didn’t design it herself?”

The implication spread like wildfire.

Mindy wasn’t talented. Emma Wilson had done everything.

Before Mindy could respond, Wade stepped forward. His smile was calm, almost gentle.

”So,” he said lightly, ”did you also borrow someone else’s design?”

Missy blinked. ”What?”

”Because your explanation,” Wade continued, ”didn’t seem to understand your own dress.”

The color drained from Missy’s face.

Drake stepped forward, his voice sharp. ”Who are you to interfere in Hawthorne family matters? You’re nothing but a stray orphan.”

The air turned cold.

Mindy’s eyes hardened. ”Shut up.”

Her voice was ice.

”He,” she said, pointing at Wade, ”is my brother. You don’t get to insult him.”

She turned her gaze on Drake, her tone cutting like glass. ”If you have so much free time, why don’t you control your precious sister? She seems desperate to become someone’s mistress. Should I help make her dream come true?”

The corridor erupted in gasps.

Layton’s expression darkened. He pulled his arm free from Missy’s grasp. She stumbled, panic flashing across her face.

”S-Sister, it’s not like that—”

”Oh, for heaven’s sake,” Ana’s voice rang out, sharp and amused. She strode forward, arms crossed, eyes gleaming with mischief. ”Can’t you understand simple words? She’s told you a hundred times—you’re not her sister.”

Ana tilted her head, feigning innocence. ”Unless, of course, you’re actually Raymond Hawthorne’s illegitimate daughter. In that case, you wouldn’t even be stepsisters. You’d be real sisters.”

Silence.

Emily’s face went rigid. Missy’s smile vanished completely.

”What nonsense are you saying?” Emily snapped.

Ana shrugged. ”I’m just asking. Your daughter’s the one acting like nonsense all day. Why can’t she leave Mindy alone? Does she break out in hives if she’s not the center of attention?”

Laughter rippled through the corridor. Even Lucy Wale, standing nearby, couldn’t hide her grin.

Missy’s face turned crimson.

And then Wade delivered the final blow.

”Well,” he said calmly, ”I suppose she learned it from her mother.”

The laughter died instantly.

Silence fell—heavy, suffocating, absolute.

Emily’s face drained of color. Missy’s lips parted, but no sound came out.

The corridor seemed to hold its breath.

Mindy stood in the center of it all, calm and unshaken, her eyes cold and clear.

The phoenix didn’t ask for permission.

It simply rose.
