BRUSHSTROKES OF REVENGE

The Bright Auditorium shimmered beneath a thousand lights, its vaulted ceiling reflecting the glow of the massive LED screen suspended above the stage. The air was thick with anticipation—an almost tangible hum that rippled through the crowd like static before a storm. Hundreds of designers filled the hall, each one dressed in their finest, their eyes sharp and restless.

Dozens of fashion houses had gathered, their banners gleaming like jewels. Five judges sat poised at the front, their expressions unreadable.

And beyond these walls, millions of viewers watched through Bright Group’s official live stream, waiting for history to unfold.

The elegant host stepped onto the stage, her sequined gown catching the light as she smiled into the cameras. ”Ladies and gentlemen,” she began, her voice smooth and confident, ”welcome to the National Elite Design Championship!”

Thunderous applause erupted, echoing through the hall like a wave. The sound rolled upward, bouncing off the glass panels and chandeliers, until it became a single, unified roar of excitement.

”This year’s competition,” the host continued, ”will once again follow Bright Group’s founding principles—fairness, transparency, and talent above everything else.”

The words carried weight. Everyone in the room knew what they meant. Bright Group’s reputation was legendary. No bribes. No favoritism. No backstage deals. Only skill. Only art.

”The competition will last two days,” the host announced. The LED screen behind her flickered to life, displaying the schedule in elegant gold lettering.

Day One

• Round One — Bloom

• Round Two — Metamorphosis

Day Two

• Announcement of Top Five Finalists

• Round Three — Legacy

• Final Round — Eternity

”The designers will have three hours to complete each gown,” she explained. ”Only originality, craftsmanship, and presentation will determine the winners. No outside assistance. No substitutions. No favoritism.”

The cameras panned slowly across the contestants. Some smiled nervously. Others sat still, their faces masks of concentration. The audience leaned forward, drawn into the quiet tension that filled the air.

And then, the host’s smile brightened. ”Now,” she said, ”allow us to introduce today’s competing companies and their chief designers.”

One by one, company logos appeared on the screen. Small studios. Independent designers. Regional brands. Each name was met with polite applause. The rhythm of introductions built like a drumbeat, steady and expectant.

Then the screen flashed again, and a familiar logo appeared in bold silver letters.

RONA DESIGN

Chief Designer: Missy Hawthorne

A murmur swept through the hall. Missy rose gracefully from her seat, her white gown flowing like liquid silk. The spotlight caught her perfectly, illuminating her flawless smile.

”The defending champion!” someone whispered.

”I knew she’d be here!”

”She’s definitely winning again.”

”She’s amazing.”

The applause swelled. Cameras flashed. Emily Hawthorne’s face glowed with pride, her hands clasped together as if she were watching a coronation. Raymond nodded approvingly, his chest swelling with satisfaction. Drake and Jagger exchanged confident smiles. Even Sonia, who rarely showed emotion, allowed herself a small, pleased nod.

Missy accepted the attention with practiced modesty. ”Thank you,” she said sweetly. ”I’ll do my best.”

The cameras lingered on her for a moment longer before moving on.

Next came Liora Fashion, represented by Lucy Wale. The young heiress waved confidently, her fans cheering from the audience. Her poise was effortless, her smile sharp.

Then Wesley Design appeared on the screen. Adam Gray nodded once from his wheelchair, his expression calm and composed. He didn’t need theatrics. His reputation spoke for itself. Last year’s runner-up—many still believed he should have won.

One company after another followed, each introduction adding to the mounting anticipation. The audience clapped politely, but everyone was waiting for the same thing.

The lights dimmed.

A hush fell over the auditorium.

The LED screen turned black for a heartbeat, then burst into gold.

A single logo appeared—sleek, elegant, unmistakable.

LUXT DESIGN.

The reaction was immediate.

”LUXT!”

”They’re finally participating!”

”I’ve waited years for this!”

”The mysterious designer is finally appearing?”

Even Jonathan Harper, the notoriously stoic master designer, leaned forward slightly. Selena Marwin’s lips curved into a smile of genuine curiosity.

The host’s voice rang out, proud and clear. ”Representing LUXT Design...”

The screen shifted. A photograph appeared—soft lighting, elegant composition. Then, in large golden letters, the name appeared beneath it.

Chief Designer: Mindy Wilson.

Silence.

Complete, absolute silence.

For a moment, it was as if the entire hall had forgotten how to breathe.

Then came the whispers.

”Wilson?”

”Wait... Wilson?”

The murmurs grew louder, spreading like wildfire.

”Isn’t that Mindy Hawthorne?”

”When did she become Wilson?”

”Oh my God!”

”The Hawthorne family severed ties with her six months ago!”

”She changed back to her mother’s surname?”

”She’s Maria Wilson’s daughter...”

The noise swelled into chaos. Even the judges exchanged surprised glances. Emily’s smile froze mid-expression. Missy’s face stiffened, her knuckles whitening around the edge of her seat. Raymond’s eyes widened, disbelief flickering across his features.

Wilson.

She had truly abandoned the Hawthorne name.

Not just emotionally. Officially.

Drake clenched his fists beneath the table. Jagger stared blankly at the screen, his lips parting slightly. ”She really changed it,” he muttered under his breath.

And on the stage, the woman at the center of it all stood perfectly still.

Mindy Wilson.

She didn’t flinch. She didn’t smile. She didn’t even blink.

There was no pride in her expression. No sadness. No anger.

Just peace.

Beside her, Layla stood with quiet pride, her chin lifted. Wade crossed his arms, a faint smile tugging at his lips. And Ana—unapologetically loud, gloriously unfiltered—started clapping.

”That’s my girl!” she shouted.

The sound broke the tension. Slowly, others joined in. The applause spread, hesitant at first, then stronger, until the entire auditorium was clapping.

Not because they knew her.

But because they were curious.

The mysterious chief designer of LUXT Design was only twenty-three years old.

And she had just declared her independence to the entire world.

Across the city, in the glass tower of Knight Group Headquarters, Layton Knight sat behind his desk, reviewing contracts. The morning sunlight filtered through the blinds, casting sharp lines across his desk. Everything was quiet, orderly, predictable—until the door burst open.

Mike rushed in, breathless. ”President Knight!”

Layton didn’t look up. ”What is it?”

”Miss... Miss Mindy...” Mike stammered, clutching a tablet. ”She’s participating in the National Design Championship.”

Layton’s pen didn’t pause. ”So?”

Mike swallowed hard. ”She’s the chief designer of LUXT.”

The pen stopped.

Layton looked up slowly. ”What?”

Mike handed him the tablet. The live stream was still running.

Layton’s eyes locked on the screen.

There she was.

Calm. Confident. Beautiful.

Below her image, one name glowed in gold.

Mindy Wilson.

Not Hawthorne.

Not Knight.

Wilson.

For a long moment, he didn’t move. The world seemed to narrow until there was only that name, that face, that quiet composure.

He realized, with a strange, hollow ache, that he didn’t know this woman at all.

Not even a little.

His gaze shifted. Standing beside her was Wade Wilson—tall, composed, effortlessly at ease. He leaned toward Mindy, handing her a bottle of water as they discussed something on a sketchpad. The gesture was natural, familiar.

Something inside Layton tightened.

”Mike,” he said quietly.

”Yes, President?”

”Prepare the car. We’re going.”

Mike blinked. ”To Bright Auditorium?”

”Now.”

Mike hesitated only a second before nodding. ”Yes, President.”

As he turned to leave, a grin flickered across his face. The moment the door closed behind him, he pumped his fist in silent triumph.

Finally.

The refrigerator was moving.

Half an hour later, the Bright Auditorium was alive with motion. The competition had officially begun. Designers worked feverishly inside their assigned stations, each one a miniature studio equipped with everything they could possibly need—wide tables, professional sewing machines, private fitting rooms, and display platforms large enough to showcase ten gowns.

Bright Group spared no expense.

Layton entered quietly, Mike trailing behind him. The moment he stepped inside, Missy spotted him. Her eyes lit up.

”Layton!” she exclaimed, hurrying over. ”You came!”

Before he could react, she slipped her arm through his. ”I knew you’d come to support me.”

Layton’s gaze drifted past her. His eyes scanned the hall until they found her.

Mindy.

She stood at LUXT’s station, discussing fabric placement with Wade. Layla was adjusting measurements on a mannequin, her movements precise. Ana sat nearby, legs crossed, sipping iced coffee and offering commentary that was both enthusiastic and utterly useless.

”No, no,” Ana said, waving her straw. ”The ribbon should be two millimeters to the left.”

Layla didn’t even look up. ”You don’t know sewing.”

”I know beauty,” Ana replied, dead serious.

Wade laughed. Mindy smiled faintly.

Layton watched them quietly. She never looked his way. Not once.

Ana noticed him first. She elbowed Layla. ”Our favorite refrigerator has arrived.”

Layla glanced over. ”Oh. He brought his crying sidekick too.”

Ana burst into laughter. ”Perfect pair.”

Wade chuckled under his breath. Mindy continued sketching, her focus unbroken.

For some reason, Layton frowned.

Why wasn’t she looking at him?

She should have been angry. She should have confronted him. She should have said something—anything.

Instead, she acted as if he didn’t exist.

That feeling was strangely unpleasant.

Three hours later, the first round concluded. The host returned to the stage, her voice bright and clear. ”Ladies and gentlemen, the presentation for Round One—Bloom—will now begin!”

Applause filled the hall. One by one, designers carried their completed gowns to the stage. The first few presentations went smoothly, each designer explaining their inspiration and technique. The judges nodded, the audience applauded, and the rhythm of the competition settled into place.

Then came the announcement everyone had been waiting for.

”The defending champion—Miss Missy Hawthorne!”

The applause was thunderous. Missy walked onto the stage, her pastel gown shimmering beneath the lights. The fabric flowed like water, delicate and ethereal. She smiled, poised and radiant.

”My inspiration,” she began, ”comes from a flower waiting patiently for true love to bloom.”

Her voice was soft, melodic. She spoke of petals and sunlight, of patience and beauty. The audience listened, entranced. When she finished, the applause was immediate. Emily’s eyes shone with pride. Raymond smiled, satisfied. Drake and Jagger nodded approvingly.

Then a calm voice broke the rhythm.

”May I ask a question?”

The room stilled.

Every head turned.

Mindy stood, her expression serene.

Missy’s smile didn’t falter. ”Of course,” she said sweetly.

Mindy’s gaze moved to the gown. ”Your inspiration is beautiful,” she said. ”But I don’t quite understand how it connects to your design.”

The silence that followed was sharp enough to cut glass.

Missy blinked, her smile tightening. ”Well,” she began, ”the petals represent—”

She launched into a longer explanation, weaving words with practiced grace. The audience nodded along. It sounded convincing.

But on the judges’ panel, Jonathan Harper frowned slightly. Selena Marwin exchanged a glance with him. Neither spoke, but the faint crease between Jonathan’s brows said enough.

Something felt off.

Not wrong enough to criticize. But not entirely right either.

Across the hall, Lucy Wale crossed her arms. ”She’s right,” she murmured.

Her assistant blinked. ”What?”

”The dress is excellent,” Lucy said. ”But the inspiration doesn’t breathe with it.”

Nearby, Adam Gray studied the gown in silence. His fiancée, Jodey, scoffed. ”That Mindy woman is obviously jealous.”

Adam didn’t respond. His eyes stayed on the stage.

Online, the live chat exploded.

”She’s targeting Missy!”

”So jealous!”

”Last year’s winner is obviously talented!”

”She’s just trying to embarrass her!”

Only a few voices disagreed.

”Actually, her question wasn’t unreasonable.”

”I felt something missing too.”

But those comments were quickly drowned out by the flood of support for Missy.

Backstage, Missy returned to her station with reddened eyes. She lowered her head, her voice trembling just enough to sound sincere. ”I don’t know why Sister keeps making things difficult for me...”

Emily immediately wrapped her arms around her. ”It’s alright,” she soothed. ”Everyone knows your talent.”

The Hawthorne family gathered around, murmuring comfort. Exactly as Missy intended.

From across the room, Mindy watched them. A faint smile touched her lips.

The seed had been planted.

She didn’t need anyone to believe her today. She only needed a few people to start wondering.

That was enough.

Adam Gray’s presentation followed. His gown was a masterpiece of structure and emotion—clean lines, subtle color transitions, and a story that flowed seamlessly from concept to creation. The judges nodded appreciatively. His fans erupted online.

Lucy Wale came next. Her design radiated confidence and vitality, a bold fusion of modern geometry and classic elegance. Her explanation was effortless, her presence commanding. Another round of applause followed.

Then the host smiled. ”Our final presentation for Round One—LUXT Design, Chief Designer, Mindy Wilson.”

The hall fell silent again.

Mindy walked onto the stage, her steps unhurried. She stood beside her gown—a soft ivory-and-blush creation that seemed to breathe under the lights. The fabric shimmered like morning mist, delicate yet alive.

She looked toward the judges, her voice calm and clear.

”This gown is called First Dawn,” she said. ”My inspiration is a young girl taking her very first step into the world. A heart untouched. A dream unbroken. A soul blooming before life teaches it fear.”

Her words flowed like poetry.

”The soft ivory represents innocence. The blush pink symbolizes hope. And every embroidered flower marks another dream waiting to bloom. When she wears this dress, she isn’t trying to become beautiful. She already is. She’s simply beginning her journey.”

Silence.

Not because it lacked emotion.

But because everyone was listening.

Jonathan Harper’s lips curved into a rare smile. Selena’s eyes softened. Even Alexander Bright, who rarely showed approval, nodded almost imperceptibly.

The inspiration fit perfectly. Every stitch. Every color. Every flower. Everything belonged together.

Inside the Wilson mansion, Emma Wilson sat before the television, her hands trembling. Tears welled in her eyes as she watched her granddaughter on the screen.

”Maria...” she whispered.

Jasper reached over, taking her hand gently. ”Our granddaughter has grown,” he said softly.

Emma smiled through her tears. ”Just like her mother.”

Back in the auditorium, Ana was the first to clap. ”Beautiful!” she shouted.

Layla and Wade joined in, their applause proud and unrestrained. Soon, the entire hall followed. The sound swelled, filling every corner of the room. Even those who had criticized Mindy moments ago couldn’t deny it.

The gown was breathtaking.

And somewhere near the back of the hall, Layton Knight stood silently, his eyes fixed on the stage.

He didn’t move. He didn’t blink.

Beside him, Mike whispered, almost reverently, ”Miss Mindy is incredible.”

Layton didn’t answer.

He couldn’t.

Because for the first time, he saw her—not the quiet girl who had once waited for him at home, not the woman he had tried to control, but the artist standing beneath the lights, radiant and untouchable.

And he wondered how many versions of Mindy Wilson had existed that he had never bothered to see.

The applause thundered on, but Layton heard only the echo of his own silence.

He had spent years believing he understood her.

Now he realized he had never known her at all.
