BRUSHSTROKES OF REVENGE

Thunderous applause rolled through the Bright Auditorium as the final contestant of the second round stepped off the stage. The air shimmered with tension and exhaustion, the kind that only came after hours of creation and judgment. The host returned to the center of the stage, her smile bright and practiced, her voice carrying easily through the hall.

”Ladies and gentlemen,” she announced, ”the judges have completed their evaluation for Round Two. The scores are now ready.”

The massive LED screen behind her flickered to life. The lights dimmed slightly, and the entire auditorium fell into a hush. Every contestant instinctively held their breath. The faint hum of the screen was the only sound as the rankings began to appear, one by one.

Round Two Results

First Place — Adam Gray (Snow Group) — 99 Points

Second Place — Mindy Wilson (LUXT Design) — 98 Points

Third Place — Lucy Wale (Liora Fashion) — 95 Points

Fourth Place — Missy Hawthorne (Rona Design) — 95 Points

The crowd erupted into applause. The sound was polite at first, then grew into genuine enthusiasm. Adam remained expressionless, his calm demeanor unshaken even as Steven leaned down to pat his shoulder.

”You deserved it,” Steven said quietly.

Adam merely nodded, his eyes thoughtful.

Across the hall, Lucy Wale smiled gracefully. Losing to Adam was something she could accept. His craftsmanship was impeccable, his designs always carried quiet strength. But at the Rona Design station, the atmosphere was far from calm.

Missy’s fingers clenched tightly around the edge of her table. Her nails dug into the polished surface until her knuckles turned white.

Second place again.

No. Not even second.

She was tied for third.

Her face almost cracked under the weight of humiliation. She had promised everyone—her family, her sponsors, the press—that she would defend her championship. She had smiled for cameras, spoken confidently about her ”inevitable victory.” And yet, there it was, glowing on the screen for the entire world to see.

Mindy Wilson had surpassed her.

Emily quietly reached for her daughter’s hand, her voice low and soothing. ”Don’t panic,” she whispered. ”We still have two rounds left.”

Missy nodded slowly, but her eyes were cold. She glanced toward the LUXT Design station, where Mindy stood surrounded by her team, calm and composed, her expression unreadable.

I won’t let you win.

Never.

She discreetly motioned for her assistant to come closer. The young woman leaned in, and Missy whispered a few instructions under her breath. The assistant’s eyes widened slightly, then she nodded quickly.

”I understand, Miss.”

Missy’s lips curved into a slow, satisfied smile. ”Good. The plan is ready. This competition...” Her voice dropped to a whisper. ”I’ll make sure Mindy loses.”

The words were soft, but the venom behind them was unmistakable.

Meanwhile, the Bright Group’s official livestream had exploded into chaos. Within minutes of the results being announced, the company uploaded high-resolution photographs of every design from the first two rounds. The comment section flooded instantly.

[Adam Gray deserves first place!]

[No! Mindy Wilson’s designs are unbelievable!]

[Her concepts are on another level.]

[I still think Missy is hiding something... her explanations never match her dresses.]

[You know, I didn’t notice until Mindy Wilson asked that question in Round One.]

[Exactly! After Mindy pointed it out, I started paying attention.]

[The disconnect is real. Missy’s explanations are always shallow.]

[If Mindy hadn’t questioned her inspiration, no one would have noticed.]

[Stop slandering Missy! She’s last year’s champion!]

[Mindy probably copied Emma Wilson’s work.]

[Cheater! How can someone suddenly become this good?]

[If she cheated, Bright Group would have disqualified her already.]

[Exactly. Bright Group has the strictest rules in the country.]

By evening, Adam’s and Mindy’s designs had become the two most-liked posts on the official page. Their popularity continued to climb, their names dominating every trending list.

But beneath the praise and admiration, something else had begun to take root—a quiet, growing suspicion.

No one would have doubted Missy if Mindy hadn’t asked that single, piercing question in Round One.

That one moment—when Mindy had calmly asked how Missy’s inspiration connected to her gown—had changed everything. It had been subtle, almost polite, but it had cracked open the illusion Missy had built around herself.

The judges had started paying closer attention. The audience had started noticing inconsistencies. And online, the debate had turned into wildfire.

Without that question, Missy’s shallow explanations would have gone unnoticed.

But now, every word she spoke was being dissected. Every design she presented was being compared to her inspiration.

The seed of doubt had been planted.

And it was growing.

By the time the applause faded and the lights dimmed, the first day of the National Design Competition had officially come to an end. Contestants carefully packed away their unfinished materials, their movements slow and deliberate. Bright Group’s staff moved swiftly, sealing every workstation under strict supervision.

Jonathan Harper personally oversaw the process, his sharp eyes missing nothing. ”I don’t care who you are,” he said coldly. ”If anyone tampers with a contestant’s work, they’ll never step into another design competition again.”

His words carried through the hall like a warning bell. Even the most confident designers felt a chill run down their spines.

Outside, the evening breeze was cool and refreshing. The city lights shimmered against the glass walls of the auditorium.

Ana stretched her arms above her head with a dramatic sigh. ”I’m starving!”

Layla laughed. ”That’s all you’ve been talking about for the last hour.”

Wade chuckled. ”Let’s celebrate. Two rounds down.”

Mindy smiled faintly. ”I know a good restaurant.”

They had barely reached their car when a familiar voice called out behind them.

”Mindy.”

The group turned.

Layton Knight was walking toward them, his usual composure tempered by something unfamiliar—hesitation. His expression was unreadable, but his eyes were fixed on her.

”Let’s have dinner together,” he said quietly.

Ana blinked, then immediately burst into laughter. ”Pfft. You’ve got some nerve.”

Mindy didn’t laugh. She simply looked at him, her gaze cool and distant. Then she let out a faint scoff.

”When I was your wife,” she said softly, ”you always preferred having dinner with your girlfriend. So why would you suddenly want dinner with me now? I don’t think I’d be able to stomach the food.”

Layton’s jaw tightened. ”Mindy. That’s enough. I understand you’re angry about the divorce—and the way I handled everything. But let me explain. You don’t have to keep speaking sarcastically.”

Her smile faded. The warmth drained from her eyes, leaving only calm indifference.

”Explain?” she repeated. ”President Knight, our agreement was simple. You live your life. I live mine. I don’t want your explanations anymore.”

Her voice remained steady, but each word struck like a blade.

”But tell me something,” she continued. ”When everyone blamed me, did you ever ask for my side of the story?”

Layton froze.

”No,” she said quietly. ”You handed me divorce papers instead. So now, I don’t want anything to do with you. Please. Leave me alone.”

The silence that followed was suffocating.

For the first time, Layton realized something painful. She wasn’t wrong. He had never listened. Not once.

Mindy turned away. ”Let’s go.”

The four of them got into the car. Within seconds, it disappeared into the city traffic, leaving Layton standing alone under the streetlights. He watched the taillights vanish into the distance, the ache in his chest spreading like frost.

Late that night, the Royal Estate was quiet. After dinner and a long, hot bath, Mindy walked downstairs in comfortable home clothes. The aroma of freshly brewed tea filled the living room. Wade and Layla were already seated on the sofa, a tray of snacks between them.

Ana had gone home hours ago, but the air still carried her laughter.

Mindy sat down, tucking one leg beneath her. ”So,” she asked, ”everything ready?”

Wade took a sip of tea before smirking. ”Exactly as you planned.”

Layla’s eyes gleamed. ”Tomorrow is going to be very interesting.”

Mindy reached for her phone and tapped the screen. A short video played—grainy footage, but clear enough to show what she needed to see. Her lips curved upward.

”Perfect,” she murmured. ”Very perfect.”

Neither Wade nor Layla asked what the video contained. They didn’t need to. The quiet confidence in her voice said enough.

By dawn, the Bright Auditorium was already alive with movement. Reporters crowded outside the entrance, cameras flashing like lightning. Microphones surrounded every famous contestant, their voices overlapping in a chaotic chorus.

Missy, dressed in a pristine white suit, stood at the center of it all. She smiled for the cameras, her posture flawless, her tone gracious.

”Miss Hawthorne,” a reporter called out, ”you didn’t perform as well as expected yesterday, but your dresses were still praised. Are you confident about winning this competition?”

Missy’s smile didn’t waver. ”The trophy is mine,” she said smoothly. ”There is nothing to worry about.”

Emily stood beside her, radiating pride. Even Raymond nodded approvingly, his confidence in his daughter unshaken.

No one noticed the quiet figure who slipped past the reporters without a word.

Mindy walked alongside Wade, Layla, and Ana, her cream-colored coat fluttering lightly in the morning breeze. She didn’t stop for interviews. She didn’t smile for cameras. She simply walked through the crowd, her silence commanding more attention than any speech could.

While Missy basked in noise, Mindy moved like calm before a storm.

At exactly nine o’clock, the host stepped onto the stage once more.

”Ladies and gentlemen,” she announced, ”welcome to Day Two of the National Design Competition! Today, we begin Round Three.”

The giant screen behind her lit up, revealing the theme in elegant gold letters.

Round Three – Eternal Threads

”A theme honoring legacy, family, and bonds that never fade,” the host explained.

The audience applauded. The contestants returned to their stations, the air thick with anticipation.

Three intense hours followed. Needles moved in rhythmic precision. Fabric fluttered like wings. Scissors flashed under the lights. The sound of creation filled the hall—a symphony of focus and ambition.

When the timer finally reached zero, the presentations began.

Adam Gray was the first major contestant called.

Steven pushed his wheelchair toward the stage, his movements careful and steady. Jodey stood backstage, her expression tight with irritation.

Adam’s gown was magnificent—a masterpiece of midnight-blue silk and silver embroidery that shimmered like starlight. The design spoke of devotion and quiet strength, of two souls bound together through time. The silver threads intertwined across the fabric like destinies that refused to part.

His explanation was calm and elegant, every word perfectly aligned with his creation. Even Jonathan Harper, who rarely praised anyone, smiled in approval.

”Outstanding,” he said simply.

The audience applauded warmly.

Lucy Wale followed next. Her gown was refined and graceful, inspired by generations of women passing down wisdom through handmade embroidery. The soft lavender tones and delicate stitching told a story of continuity—of mothers and daughters, of lessons whispered across time.

Selena Marwin couldn’t hide her admiration. ”What a beautiful interpretation,” she murmured.

Lucy bowed politely, her composure unshaken.

Then came Missy Hawthorne.

Her name echoed through the auditorium, and she walked onto the stage with practiced confidence. Her gown drew gasps the moment it appeared—an opulent creation of gold and ivory, adorned with intricate beadwork that caught the light like fire. It was gorgeous, luxurious, almost flawless.

”My inspiration,” Missy said with a serene smile, ”is the eternal beauty of blooming flowers that never fade.”

The audience applauded politely.

But on the judges’ panel, Jonathan Harper frowned.

Ever since Mindy Wilson had questioned Missy’s inspiration in Round One, he had been paying closer attention. That single question had lingered in his mind, a quiet echo that refused to fade.

And now, as he studied Missy’s gown, he saw it again—the same disconnect.

The dress spoke of sacrifice, of something lost and reborn. But her explanation spoke only of beauty. It was as if she didn’t understand her own creation.

Selena glanced at him, her brow furrowed. Alexander Bright shifted slightly in his seat.

The unease was subtle, but it was there.

Still, the two judges secretly bought by Raymond Hawthorne gave her full marks, their smiles polite but hollow. The confusion was quickly buried beneath the applause.

But the seed of doubt had already taken root.

Finally, the host smiled. ”Our last featured contestant—Chief Designer of LUXT Design, Mindy Wilson.”

The hall erupted in applause.

Mindy walked onto the stage, her steps measured and graceful. The curtain rose slowly, revealing her gown.

And the world seemed to stop.

The gown was called Eternal Promise.

Soft ivory silk flowed like moonlight, blending seamlessly into silver embroidery that shimmered with quiet grace. Delicate blue flowers climbed along the fabric like cherished memories, their petals fading into the hem as though time itself had brushed against them.

It wasn’t extravagant. It wasn’t loud.

But it was alive.

Every thread seemed to breathe. Every stitch carried emotion.

The audience fell silent.

Mindy stood beside the gown, her expression calm, her eyes luminous beneath the lights.

”My inspiration,” she began softly, ”isn’t a place. Nor an object. It’s love.”

Her voice was steady, but it carried through the hall like music.

”The love my grandmother poured into every design she created. The love my mother inherited from her. And the love they both gave me—without ever asking for anything in return.”

Her gaze lifted toward the audience, her tone deepening.

”Some promises aren’t spoken. They are stitched into our lives. They become our strength. They become eternal.”

The silence that followed was absolute.

Even Selena Marwin quietly wiped the corner of her eye. Jonathan Harper slowly removed his glasses, his voice barely above a whisper. ”Beautiful.”

Wade stood proudly beside the stage, his chest swelling with pride. Layla and Ana whistled loudly, their cheers echoing through the hall.

”That’s our girl!” Ana shouted.

The livestream exploded with comments.

[This explanation...]

[I finally understand what design storytelling means.]

[Her dresses have a soul.]

[She deserves to win!]

Of course, not everyone was convinced.

[Emma Wilson definitely helped her.]

[No rookie can design like this.]

But the voices of doubt were drowned beneath the flood of admiration.

At Knight Group Headquarters, Layton Knight sat in his office, the livestream playing on the large screen before him. He didn’t speak. He didn’t move. His eyes never left the stage.

Mike stood behind him, a faint smile tugging at his lips. ”Miss Mindy is truly extraordinary,” he said quietly.

Layton didn’t answer. But for the first time, a trace of pride flickered in his eyes.

Thirty minutes later, the host returned to the stage, her voice bright with excitement.

”Round Three—Winner—Mindy Wilson!”

The applause that followed shook the auditorium.

Wade immediately stood, clapping until his palms stung. Layla and Ana cheered, their voices rising above the crowd.

Missy sat frozen at her station, her face pale. She had lost again.

The applause thundered on, but she didn’t hear it. Her mind was already elsewhere—dark, calculating.

As the contestants began preparing for the final break, her assistant hurried over, whispering something into her ear.

Missy’s lips curved into a slow, cruel smile.

She looked toward Mindy’s workstation, her eyes gleaming with malice.

”Today’s final round,” she murmured, ”I’ll make sure you’re completely humiliated.”

The applause continued to echo through the hall, but beneath it, something darker stirred.

The phoenix had risen.

And somewhere in the shadows, someone was already plotting to burn her wings.
