BRUSHSTROKES OF REVENGE

The city was quiet that morning, the kind of quiet that came before the world fully woke. Mindy sat by the window of the penthouse, her reflection faint against the glass. The skyline stretched before her, sharp and distant, bathed in pale light. She had not slept. Every time she closed her eyes, the same memories returned—the warehouse, the rain, the sound of the gunshot. But beneath that memory, another surfaced, older and heavier.

Four years before the divorce. The year everything had changed.

Four Years Earlier

The hospital smelled of antiseptic and rain. The corridors were long and white, the kind of white that swallowed sound. Nurses moved quietly, their shoes whispering against the floor. Behind one of the closed doors, Layton Knight lay still, his body broken, his future uncertain.

The accident had been brutal. The car had flipped twice before crashing into a barrier. The doctors said he was lucky to be alive. Lucky—but not whole. His spine had been damaged. They said he might never walk again.

Mindy had heard the news from Matthew Knight, Layton’s grandfather. She had been at the Wilson estate, helping her grandmother sort through old sketches, when the call came. Matthew’s voice had been steady, but she could hear the strain beneath it.

”He won’t let anyone near him,” he said. ”Not the doctors, not the nurses. He’s refusing treatment. He’s... angry.”

Mindy had hesitated. ”What can I do?”

”You’re the only one he doesn’t push away,” Matthew said quietly. ”He listens to you. Please, Mindy. Stay with him. Help him.”

She had agreed without thinking.

When she arrived at the hospital, the sight of Layton nearly broke her. He looked nothing like the man she remembered—no longer composed and untouchable, but pale, silent, and still. His eyes were open, staring at the ceiling, unfocused. The machines beside him beeped steadily, a cruel reminder that he was alive but trapped.

She stood by the door for a long moment before stepping closer. ”Layton,” she said softly.

He turned his head slightly, his gaze finding her. His voice was low, rough from disuse. ”You shouldn’t be here.”

”Your grandfather asked me to come.”

He didn’t respond. His eyes drifted back to the ceiling.

She pulled a chair beside his bed and sat down. ”You don’t have to talk,” she said. ”I’ll just stay.”

He didn’t tell her to leave. That was enough.

The days blurred together after that. Mindy came every morning and stayed until night. She brought food, read to him, adjusted his pillows, and made sure the nurses followed the instructions she had received from the one person who might be able to help him—the Miracle Doctor.

No one knew the doctor’s name. Not the hospital, not the Knights, not even Layton. Only Mindy knew how to reach him. Her grandfather, Dr. Jasper Wilson, had arranged it quietly. The Miracle Doctor was a legend in the medical world, a man who healed what others deemed impossible.

Mindy had begged for his help. She had gone to him in person, her voice shaking, her eyes red from crying. ”Please,” she had said. ”He’s only twenty-four. He doesn’t deserve this.”

The doctor had agreed on one condition: his identity would remain secret. He would send instructions, and she would follow them exactly.

So she did.

Every day, she carried out the treatments he prescribed—special exercises, nerve stimulation, herbal compresses, and a strict diet. She coordinated everything quietly, making sure no one questioned where the new methods came from.

Layton never asked. He simply endured.

He was cold, yes, but not cruel. He rarely spoke, but when he did, his words were measured.

”Why are you doing this?” he asked once, his voice quiet.

”Because you need someone,” she said.

He looked at her for a long moment. ”You don’t.”

She smiled faintly. ”Maybe not. But I want to.”

He didn’t reply, but his gaze lingered on her longer than usual before turning away.

Weeks passed. The doctors were astonished by his progress. The swelling in his spine began to subside. The pain lessened. He could move his fingers again, then his arms.

Mindy was there for every small victory. She helped him sit up for the first time, her hands steady on his shoulders. He didn’t thank her, but he didn’t have to. The way his eyes met hers for a brief second was enough.

When he tried to stand for the first time, he nearly fell. She caught him, her arms around his waist, her heart pounding.

”Careful,” she said.

He steadied himself, his jaw tight. ”I’m fine.”

”You’re not,” she said softly. ”But you will be.”

He looked at her then, really looked at her. ”You sound certain.”

”I am.”

He nodded once, a small, almost imperceptible gesture of acknowledgment.

Missy never came.

She had left for Europe a week after the accident, claiming she couldn’t bear to see him like that. She sent flowers once, a brief note attached: Get well soon.

Layton never mentioned her. Not once.

Mindy didn’t ask. She didn’t need to. She saw the way his expression hardened whenever the nurses whispered Missy’s name.

Instead, she focused on his recovery. She read to him when he couldn’t sleep. She brought him coffee when he refused to eat. She sat beside him in silence when the pain was too much to bear.

Sometimes, late at night, when the hospital was quiet and the city lights flickered through the blinds, he would speak.

”Do you ever get tired of this?” he asked once.

”Of what?”

”Taking care of people who don’t ask for it.”

She smiled faintly. ”You didn’t ask, but you needed it.”

He didn’t argue.

Three months later, he took his first step.

It was slow, unsteady, but real. The doctors called it a miracle. Layton didn’t. He simply stood there, gripping the walker, his expression unreadable.

Mindy stood a few feet away, her hands clasped together, her heart in her throat.

”You did it,” she said quietly.

He looked at her, his voice low. ”We did.”

It was the first time he had included her in anything.

After that, his recovery accelerated. The Miracle Doctor’s treatments continued, and Mindy followed every instruction precisely. Layton regained strength faster than anyone expected. Within six months, he was walking without assistance.

The day he left the hospital, the press called it a medical wonder. Cameras flashed, reporters shouted questions, and Matthew Knight stood proudly beside his grandson.

Mindy stayed in the background, watching from a distance. She didn’t want attention. She only wanted to see him walk out of that building on his own.

When the crowd dispersed, Layton approached her. He was dressed in a dark suit, his posture straight, his expression calm.

”You’re leaving?” he asked.

She nodded. ”My part’s done.”

He studied her for a moment. ”You never told me who treated me.”

She hesitated. ”It doesn’t matter.”

”It does,” he said quietly. ”I know it wasn’t the hospital.”

She met his gaze. ”You’re right. But I promised to keep it secret.”

He didn’t press further. Instead, he said, ”You stayed when everyone else left.”

”I said I would.”

He nodded once. ”Thank you.”

It was simple, almost emotionless, but it was the most sincere thing she had ever heard from him.

Present Day

The memory faded, leaving Mindy staring out at the city. The skyline shimmered in the morning light, distant and cold. She could still see him as he had been then—quiet, composed, standing on his own for the first time.

He had thanked her once. Just once. And she had carried that moment with her for years.

Now, sitting in the same penthouse where he had handed her divorce papers, she wondered if he remembered it at all.

He had known it was her. He had known she stayed when Missy left. He had known she was the one who coordinated his treatment, who begged the Miracle Doctor to save him.

And yet, years later, when it mattered most, he had chosen Missy.

The irony was almost unbearable.

She had helped him stand again, and he had used that strength to walk away from her.

Her hands tightened around the edge of the chair. The faint hum of the city filled the silence.

She remembered the way he had looked at her in the hospital—distant but respectful, cold but not unkind. He had never raised his voice, never insulted her, never dismissed her efforts. He had simply existed in that quiet space between gratitude and detachment.

And she had mistaken that quiet for something deeper.

She had thought that if she stayed long enough, if she cared enough, he might one day look at her and see more than the girl who helped him recover.

But he never did.

She rose from the chair and walked to the window. The city stretched endlessly before her, glittering under the pale sun. Somewhere out there, Layton was probably sitting in his office, calm and composed, the same as always.

He had once told her, ”You stayed when everyone else left.”

Now she understood what that really meant. It wasn’t love. It wasn’t even affection. It was acknowledgment—nothing more.

And yet, that small acknowledgment had been enough for her once.

She pressed her palm against the glass, her reflection merging with the skyline.

”Four years,” she whispered. ”Four years I spent helping you stand again.”

Her voice trembled, but her eyes were dry.

”You respected me once,” she said softly. ”You even thanked me. But when it mattered, you still chose her.”

The words hung in the air, quiet and final.

She turned away from the window, her gaze falling on the untouched canvas in the corner of the room. It had been blank for weeks, waiting for her to begin again.

She picked up a pencil and drew a single line across it—steady, deliberate.

No colors. No symbols. Just a beginning.

Because this time, she wasn’t painting for anyone else.

This time, she was starting over for herself.

And as the morning light filled the room, Mindy Hawthorne finally let the past settle where it belonged—behind her.
