BRUSHSTROKES OF REVENGE

The rain came down in sheets, turning the highway into a river of light. The Hawthorne car cut through the storm, its headlights slicing the darkness. Inside, Mindy sat beside her sister, half‑listening to Missy complain about the weather. The driver’s knuckles were white on the steering wheel.

Then the world exploded.

A blinding flash, the screech of tires, the crunch of metal. The car spun, slammed into the guardrail, and stopped. Before Mindy could draw breath, the door was wrenched open.

”Out!”

Hands dragged her into the rain. A cloth bag went over her head, the smell of oil and sweat filling her lungs. Plastic ties bit into her wrists. She heard Missy screaming somewhere close, then the slam of a van door.

The engine roared.

Inside the van, the air was thick with gasoline and fear. Missy sobbed beside her. A man laughed. Another muttered something in a language she didn’t know.

They drove for hours. When the van finally stopped, the silence was worse than the noise.

The blindfold came off for a moment—just long enough for Mindy to see the outline of an abandoned warehouse, its windows boarded, its doors chained.

They were shoved inside.

The floor was concrete, slick with water. A single bulb flickered overhead.

”Sit,” one of the men ordered.

They obeyed.

Missy’s hands trembled. Mindy tried to whisper something—anything—to calm her, but the words caught in her throat.

Hours passed. The kidnappers spoke in low voices, arguing over money. One of them made a call.

Mindy heard her father’s voice through the speakerphone, trembling. ”Please, don’t hurt them. I’ll pay whatever you want.”

Drake’s voice came next, sharp and impatient. ”You’ll get your money. Just tell us where to send it.”

Jagger muttered something about police involvement.

Then Layton’s voice—cool, measured, detached. ”You’ll have your payment within the hour. But I want proof of life.”

The kidnappers laughed. ”One hundred million,” one said. ”You pay, both live.”

The deal was made.

Hours later, the money was transferred. Mindy heard the confirmation tone from the kidnapper’s phone. Relief flooded her chest. It was over. They would be released.

But the man holding the phone smiled—a slow, cruel smile.

He dialed again. ”We changed our mind,” he said. ”You can only have one girl back. Choose.”

There was a stunned silence on the other end.

Raymond’s voice broke first. ”What do you mean, choose?”

”One goes free,” the man said. ”The other stays. You have one minute.”

Mindy’s heart stopped.

Drake’s voice came through, tight with panic. ”You can’t do this! We paid you!”

”Choose,” the man repeated. ”Or we kill both.”

The line went quiet.

Mindy could hear her father breathing. Could hear the muffled sobs of her brothers. Could hear Layton’s silence.

”Thirty seconds,” the man said.

Mindy’s pulse roared in her ears. She looked at her father, her voice trembling. ”Dad... please.”

He turned toward her, and for a moment, she saw something flicker in his eyes—hesitation, maybe even guilt. But then his gaze shifted to Missy, who was sobbing softly, her voice breaking as she cried out, ”Daddy, please! I don’t want to die!”

Raymond’s jaw clenched. His hands curled into fists. And then, in a voice that sounded like it had been carved from stone, he said, ”Save Missy.”

The world tilted.

Mindy stared at him, her breath catching in her throat. ”What?” The word came out as a whisper, fragile and disbelieving. ”Dad... no. You can’t—”

But he wouldn’t meet her eyes. He turned away, his shoulders rigid, his face pale. The leader nodded, amused. ”One vote for the pretty one,” he said. ”Next?”

Drake stepped forward, his expression unreadable. He had always been the pragmatic one, the one who saw people as assets or liabilities. Mindy had defended him countless times, insisting he had a heart beneath his cold exterior. Now, as he looked between her and Missy, she saw the calculation in his eyes.

”Drake,” she said, her voice breaking. ”Please. I’m your sister.”

He hesitated. For a moment, she thought he might choose her. But then Missy whimpered again, her tears glistening in the dim light. Drake exhaled slowly. ”Save Missy,” he said.

The words hit her like a blow. Her vision blurred. ”Drake—how can you—”

He looked away. ”I’m sorry.”

Jagger was next. He didn’t even hesitate. ”Missy,” he said flatly. ”She’s older. She’s the face of the family.”

Mindy’s breath came in ragged gasps. The ropes cut deeper into her wrists as she struggled against them. ”Older?” she choked out. ”That’s your reason? Because she’s older?”

Her voice broke. The leader chuckled, his eyes gleaming. ”Three votes for Missy. Guess we know who the favorite is.”

Mindy’s gaze darted to Layton. Her last hope. Her husband. The man who had promised to love her, to protect her, to stand by her side no matter what. He stood apart from the others, his face pale, his hands trembling slightly. When their eyes met, something inside her cracked.

”Layton,” she whispered.

He flinched, just barely. His lips parted, but no words came. The silence stretched, unbearable. The rain hammered against the roof, the sound deafening. Finally, he spoke, his voice low, almost inaudible.

”Save Missy.”

The world went silent.

Mindy stared at him, her mind refusing to process the words. ”What did you say?” she asked, her voice trembling. ”Layton... no. You can’t mean that.”

He looked at her then, really looked at her, and she saw it—the guilt, the fear, the cowardice. ”I’m sorry,” he said quietly. ”I can’t lose her.”

Her heart stopped. The air left her lungs. For a moment, she couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think. The pain was too vast, too consuming. It wasn’t just betrayal—it was annihilation. Every memory, every promise, every touch between them turned to ash in an instant.

The leader laughed softly. ”Well, that settles it.”

Mindy shook her head, tears streaming down her face. ”No. Please. Don’t do this. I didn’t do anything wrong. I loved you—all of you. I—”

Her voice broke into a sob. The ropes cut into her wrists as she struggled, desperate, wild. ”Please! Don’t let them kill me!”

Missy was crying too, her voice high and panicked. ”I don’t want to die! Please, Daddy, please!”

The leader raised his gun. ”You heard them,” he said. ”They made their choice.”

Mindy’s world shattered.

She heard every word through the thin wall. Her father. Her brothers. Her husband. All of them choosing Missy.

The kidnappers dragged Missy away. Mindy screamed, but no one answered.

The door slammed shut.

She was alone.

The Facility

They drugged her before dawn.

When she woke, the air smelled of salt and rust. The room was small, windowless, lit by a single bulb that buzzed like an insect. The walls were damp, streaked with mold.

Her head throbbed. Her mouth was dry. She tried to move, but her limbs felt heavy, her thoughts slow.

Outside, she heard crying—girls’ voices, dozens of them. Some pleaded, some cursed, some were silent. The language around her was strange; the faces that passed the door were strangers.

She didn’t know what country she was in.

Her white dress, once soft and new, was now gray with dirt, torn at the hem. She clutched it around herself like armor.

The first time she tried to fight, they beat her with a metal pole. The pain was sharp, bright, unforgettable.

After that, she learned to stay quiet.

Days blurred together. The drugs dulled her thoughts. The food was stale bread and water. The air was thick with sweat and despair.

The other girls whispered at night. One had been there for months. Another had stopped speaking altogether. They were ghosts in borrowed bodies.

On the tenth day, the girl in the next cell stopped crying. Mindy pressed her ear to the wall, listening for breathing, for movement, for anything. There was only silence.

On the fifteenth day, she stopped counting. The drugs, turned her memories into fog. Sometimes she forgot her own name. But she never forgot the sound of Layton’s voice: ”I can’t lose her.”

Mindy still believed someone would come.

Layton would find her. He was clever, resourceful. He would never let her vanish.

She repeated his name until it lost meaning.

Sometimes she dreamed of him—his voice, his touch, the way he used to look at her before everything went cold. She woke from those dreams with tears on her face.

Her reflection in the cracked mirror became a stranger: swollen lip, bruised cheek, eyes that no longer looked like hers.

The white dress grew filthier each day, the fabric stiff with dried blood and dirt.

She counted the days by the meals, but eventually even that blurred.

Hope became a habit, not a belief.

Every night, the same words echoed in her mind.

They chose her.

They all chose her.

Her father. Her brothers. Her husband.

Each name was a wound that refused to close.

The Call

One evening, the door opened.

A man entered, holding her phone.

”Talk,” he said.

She blinked, disoriented. The drugs still fogged her mind, but she was conscious enough to feel the weight of the moment.

The screen lit up.

A video call.

Missy’s face appeared—perfect makeup, perfect smile. Behind her, chandeliers glowed. Music played faintly, laughter in the background.

For a heartbeat, Mindy felt relief so sharp it hurt.

”Missy,” she whispered, tears spilling. ”Please... save me. Tell them where I am. Please!”

Missy tilted her head, the smile sharpening into something cruel.

”How can I save you, Mindy?” she said softly. ”I’m the one who planned it. The kidnapping, the traffickers—everything. I finally have what was always mine.”

Mindy froze. The words didn’t make sense.

”What are you saying? You planned this? But... they chose you... Father chose you...”

Missy laughed. ”Of course they did. I made sure of it.”

Another voice joined in—smooth, satisfied, unmistakable.

Emily.

”Hello, dear,” she said. ”Did you really think we’d let you keep everything that belonged to us?”

The screen flickered, the image shifting to show the glittering ballroom behind them. Guests in gowns and tuxedos raised glasses. A banner hung above the stage: Knight Enterprises and Hawthorne Group Celebrate Their Union.

Missy lifted her hand, showing a diamond ring that sparkled under the lights.

Mindy’s heart stopped.

Emily’s voice purred through the speaker. ”Let’s tell her what she’s lost, shall we?”
