BRUSHSTROKES OF REVENGE

The convention hall pulsed with energy long before the competition began. The air shimmered with perfume, camera flashes, and the low hum of ambition. Representatives from every major fashion house mingled across the marble floor, exchanging polite smiles that didn’t reach their eyes.

Laughter floated through the air—light, practiced, and utterly false. Beneath the glittering chandeliers, alliances were being formed, rivalries reignited, and reputations sharpened like blades.

And then, in the middle of that glittering chaos, Emily Hawthorne froze.

Her smile faltered mid-sentence. The color drained from her face. Her gaze locked on the entrance, unblinking.

”Mindy?”

The single word slipped out before she could stop it—soft, disbelieving, but sharp enough to slice through the noise.

The people around her turned instinctively. Raymond followed her line of sight, his conversation dying mid-laugh.

Drake and Jagger turned next, their relaxed expressions stiffening. Even Missy, radiant in her white gown, stopped mid-step.

The group of socialites clustered behind her craned their necks, curious.

And then the crowd parted.

The woman walking through the main entrance was unmistakable.

For six months, Mindy Wilson had vanished from Greendale. No calls. No appearances. No whispers in the press. It was as if she had evaporated from the city entirely.

Yet here she was—walking through the entrance as though she owned the place.

She wore a cream-colored suit that fit her like it had been tailored by confidence itself. Her long hair flowed freely down her back, catching the light with every step.

There was no jewelry, no ostentatious display of wealth—just quiet elegance. The timid girl who used to lower her head whenever she saw the Hawthorne family was gone.

Every step she took was deliberate. Graceful. Controlled.

And the crowd noticed.

Conversations faltered. Heads turned. Even the photographers, trained to chase celebrity, found their lenses drifting toward her.

There was something magnetic about her presence—something that demanded attention without asking for it.

Raymond stared longer than he meant to. His brows drew together, confusion flickering across his face.

She had changed.

He couldn’t pinpoint how. Her face was the same. Her voice, when she greeted the receptionist, hadn’t changed either. But something about her aura was different—stronger, sharper, untouchable.

The girl who used to chase after her family’s affection was gone.

For the first time in six months, Raymond Hawthorne couldn’t recognize his own daughter.

Emily’s reaction was far less subtle. Hatred flashed across her eyes before she could hide it. For one brief, dangerous second, she saw Maria—Mindy’s mother—in that calm smile, that effortless grace, that quiet defiance.

The resemblance was uncanny. It was infuriating.

Her fingernails dug into her palm until the pain forced her to breathe. Then, with the skill of a lifelong actress, she replaced the hatred with a trembling smile. Her eyes glistened as if she were holding back tears.

”Mindy,” she said softly, stepping forward. ”We missed you so much. Your father has been worried sick. We’ve all been so concerned.”

The performance was flawless. The tone, the expression, the gentle tremor in her voice—it was the kind of act that had fooled society for decades.

For a moment, Raymond almost believed it himself. He half-expected Mindy to soften, to smile awkwardly like before, to call him Dad and pretend the past hadn’t happened.

But Mindy only turned toward them, her expression unreadable.

”Is that so?” she said lightly. ”That’s strange. I don’t remember receiving a single phone call from any of you during the past six months.”

The words weren’t loud, but they carried. The nearby crowd went silent. Even the hum of conversation seemed to pause.

Each syllable landed like a slap.

Raymond’s jaw tightened. ”Mindy!” he snapped. ”You are still the same. What are you even doing here?”

Mindy’s gaze didn’t waver. ”None of your business,” she said calmly. Then, after a beat, she added, ”Mr. Hawthorne.”

The title hit harder than any insult.

No Dad. No Father. Just Mr. Hawthorne.

The sound of it made his chest tighten. Around them, a few people exchanged uneasy glances. The silence that followed was thick enough to choke on.

Missy stepped forward, her smile perfectly composed. ”Sister,” she said sweetly, ”what a coincidence. What are you doing here?”

Mindy sighed, the sound theatrical enough to draw a few chuckles from the onlookers. ”Missy,” she said, tilting her head, ”aren’t you exhausted?”

Missy blinked, feigning innocence. ”Hm?”

”This fake act of yours,” Mindy said, her tone light but her eyes sharp. ”I genuinely get secondhand embarrassment every time you call me sister. My mother had only one daughter—me. So unless she secretly gave birth twice without telling anyone, you are not my sister.”

The words sliced through the air like silk over steel.

Mindy gave her a once-over, then shrugged. ”But don’t worry. The Hawthorne family can keep you. They seem perfectly happy.”

Behind her, Layla burst into laughter, the sound rich and unapologetic. Even Wade chuckled, shaking his head.

Missy’s smile faltered for the first time. The socialites behind her exchanged awkward glances, some biting their lips to keep from laughing. A few turned away entirely, pretending to check their phones.

Raymond’s face darkened. His attention shifted to Layla, desperate to regain control of the situation.

He recognized her immediately—the Vice President of LUXT Design, one of the most talked-about women in the fashion industry. He straightened his jacket and extended a hand, his voice smooth. ”Miss Hart,” he said politely, ”it’s a pleasure to meet you.”

Layla glanced at his hand, then at his face. Her expression didn’t change. She simply turned away, as if he hadn’t spoken at all.

The rejection was so casual it was brutal.

Raymond’s hand hung awkwardly in midair. The silence that followed was deafening. Several nearby designers lowered their heads, shoulders shaking as they tried not to laugh.

Drake coughed into his fist. ”That was... embarrassing,” he muttered under his breath.

Raymond’s ears burned.

Only then did he notice the young man standing beside Mindy. His pupils narrowed. ”Wade,” he said slowly.

He recognized him instantly. Years ago, Jasper and Emma Wilson had adopted an orphan. That same orphan now stood before him as the Vice President of Wilson Pharmaceuticals—and Jasper’s most trusted successor.

Raymond had regretted that adoption for years. He had always believed Jasper would eventually hand the Wilson Group to one of his sons—Drake or Jagger. Instead, everything had gone to Wade.

Wade smiled politely, his tone light. ”Mr. Hawthorne,” he said, ”it’s been a while.” Then he turned to Mindy, his voice softening. ”Little sister, let’s stop wasting time talking to trash. We still have a competition to win.”

The word trash landed like a grenade.

Jagger’s face darkened instantly. ”What did you just say?” he snapped, stepping forward. ”You’re just an orphan. Who exactly are you calling trash?”

The air thickened. The crowd sensed the tension and began to edge closer, eager for drama.

Before Wade could respond, Mindy stepped forward. The warmth vanished from her face.

”Jagger,” she said quietly, ”my patience has limits.”

Her voice was calm, but the steel beneath it was unmistakable.

”And don’t ever call him an orphan again,” she continued. ”He is my brother. My family. He can call whoever he wants trash. And judging by today’s conversation...” Her gaze swept over the Hawthornes. ”...he isn’t wrong.”

The silence that followed was absolute.

Jagger froze. Brother?

She had called Wade her brother. Not Drake. Not him. Wade.

For reasons he couldn’t explain, the realization stung.

Wade chuckled softly, breaking the tension. ”Come on,” he said, patting Mindy’s shoulder. ”Don’t waste your energy. You have a trophy to win today.”

The ease between them was effortless—natural in a way that made the Hawthornes look like strangers.

Missy’s laugh broke the silence, brittle and forced. Her friends joined in, their voices high and artificial. ”Miss Hart,” Missy said sweetly, turning to Layla, ”I don’t think you know—Mindy doesn’t even have a design degree. Winning? Isn’t that a little unrealistic?”

Layla folded her arms, her expression cool. ”The biggest joke standing here,” she said evenly, ”is you.”

Missy’s smile froze.

Layla’s tone didn’t rise, but every word carried weight. ”Mindy will win,” she said simply.

Drake frowned. ”She doesn’t even have professional qualifications,” he said. ”What exactly does she know about fashion?”

Layla turned her head slowly, her gaze slicing through him like glass. ”What do you know about her?” she asked. ”You blind fools.”

Her voice was calm, but the disdain in it was unmistakable.

She looked deliberately toward Emily, then Missy. ”Some people mistake garbage for treasure,” she said. ”And diamonds for ordinary stones. I suppose blindness really is difficult to cure.”

The words hit like thunder.

Emily’s face turned a shade of green that no designer would ever dare replicate. Missy’s fingers tightened around her handbag until her knuckles whitened.

Layla’s expression didn’t change. ”You’ve spent years polishing trash,” she said softly. ”Don’t be surprised when it still smells the same.”

The crowd collectively inhaled.

It was a massacre delivered in silk.

And then, just as the tension reached its breaking point, a familiar voice rang out across the hallway.

”Sorry! Sorry! I’m late!”

Ana came jogging toward them, her heels clicking against the marble floor, two iced coffees in hand. Her hair was slightly windblown, her grin unapologetic.

”Did I miss anything entertaining?” she asked cheerfully.

Mindy accepted one of the coffees, her expression perfectly calm. ”Nothing important,” she said. ”Just one toad and a group of professional idiots competing to see who can say the dumbest thing.”

Ana blinked, then turned toward the Hawthorne family. ”Oh,” she said brightly. ”So the competition already started. I thought the fashion contest began inside.”

Several reporters nearby choked on their laughter. One actually dropped his pen.

Raymond’s face turned crimson. ”Mindy!” he barked. ”Watch your tongue!”

Emily grabbed his arm quickly, her voice trembling with false concern. ”Please, calm down,” she said. Then she turned to Mindy, her expression soft and maternal. ”We’re only worried about you.”

Ana tilted her head, feigning confusion. ”Worried?” she repeated. ”Oh. I thought you were here supporting Missy.”

She pointed toward the Rona Design preparation room. ”Go back to your station,” she said sweetly. ”Your lead actress still has rehearsals left.”

The jab landed perfectly.

Ana smiled at Missy, her tone sugar-sweet. ”And Missy,” she added, ”save some tears. You’ll need fresh ones after the competition.”

Even Wade laughed this time. Layla covered her mouth, trying—and failing—to hide her grin.

Missy’s expression twisted, the mask of politeness cracking for a split second before she forced it back into place.

The crowd was loving every second. Phones were out. Cameras were rolling. Somewhere, a reporter whispered, ”This is better than the runway.”

Before another word could be exchanged, the speakers throughout the convention center crackled to life.

”Ladies and gentlemen,” a voice announced, ”the National Couture Design Championship will officially begin in ten minutes. All participating companies are requested to proceed to their designated preparation rooms immediately.”

The announcement echoed through the hall, cutting through the tension like a blade.

Mindy took a slow sip of her coffee, her eyes never leaving Missy’s. ”Looks like the real competition’s about to start,” she said softly.

Ana grinned. ”Finally. I was getting bored of the pre-show.”

Layla adjusted her blazer, her tone cool. ”Let’s go. Diamonds don’t compete with trash—they outshine it.”

Wade chuckled. ”Well said.”

As the LUXT Design team turned to leave, the crowd parted for them instinctively. The Hawthornes stood frozen, their perfect composure cracking under the weight of humiliation.

Emily’s nails dug into her palm again. Raymond’s jaw clenched. Missy’s smile trembled.

And Mindy—calm, radiant, untouchable—walked past them without a glance.

The cameras followed her, flashes bursting like fireworks.

Behind her, Ana whispered just loud enough for the nearest reporters to hear, ”Someone should really warn them. The last time they underestimated her, she buried them with a smile.”

The reporters grinned.

The Hawthornes didn’t.

As Mindy disappeared into the preparation room, the tension she left behind lingered like perfume—sweet, sharp, and impossible to ignore.

The real battle had begun.

And this time, the Hawthornes weren’t facing the timid girl they once dismissed.

They were facing the woman who had learned how to turn pain into power.

And she was ready to make them choke on both.
