BRUSHSTROKES OF REVENGE

The silence that followed the discovery of the first star was almost unbearable. The audience sat frozen, their eyes darting between the glowing screen and the woman standing so calmly before it. Missy’s lips trembled as she stumbled backward, her voice breaking into a desperate whisper.

”No... no... that doesn’t prove anything!”

Mindy turned toward her, her expression unreadable. ”Of course,” she said softly. ”One dress could be a coincidence.”

Her heels clicked against the stage as she walked toward the second gown. The lights caught the silver threads of the Butterfly Queen, making them shimmer like wings in motion. She stopped before it, her fingers brushing the delicate fabric as if greeting an old friend. Then, with the same quiet precision as before, she lifted the layered silk around the waist.

”There.”

Jonathan Harper stepped forward again, his hands trembling as he leaned closer. The audience held its breath.

Another star.

Tiny. Silver. Hidden deep within the folds of the gown.

Exactly the same. Exactly where Maria Wilson would have placed it for perfect balance.

Jonathan inhaled sharply, his voice unsteady. ”I’ve admired Maria’s work for over twenty years,” he murmured. ”I never knew... she hid her signature this way.”

Selena Marwin’s eyes glistened. ”Only someone she truly trusted would know,” she said quietly.

Mindy nodded once. ”Exactly.”

The hall was silent except for the faint hum of the lights. Then she turned toward Missy, her tone calm but cutting. ”You called this gown Butterfly Queen,” she said. ”You said, ’Butterflies are beautiful because they have colorful wings.’”

Missy’s throat tightened.

Mindy smiled faintly, but there was sadness in it. ”No. That explanation doesn’t deserve this dress.”

She lifted the butterfly-shaped sleeves, her voice soft but resonant. ”My mother’s inspiration was simple—’Transformation is painful.’”

The words hung in the air like a prayer.

”You don’t become beautiful without first breaking your own cocoon,” she continued. ”Growth hurts. Changing hurts. But remaining the same... hurts even more.”

The audience was silent. Even the cameras seemed to hesitate, unwilling to interrupt the moment.

Selena wiped a tear from the corner of her eye. ”What a beautiful interpretation,” she whispered.

Mindy’s gaze lingered on the gown for a moment longer before she turned toward the final masterpiece.

The Crown of Dawn.

Without hesitation, she reached for the lace beneath the left sleeve and rolled it back. The fabric shimmered under the lights, and then—there it was.

Another star.

Perfectly hidden. Perfectly embroidered.

The reaction was immediate.

Gasps rippled through the auditorium.

”Oh my God!” someone cried. ”It’s real!”

”Every single one has it!”

”These are Maria Wilson’s designs!”

The noise swelled into a roar. Even Alexander Bright, the founder of the competition, slowly rose from his seat. His eyes, old and weary, softened with reverence.

”Maria,” he whispered, his voice trembling. ”You truly were extraordinary.”

Mindy’s fingers rested gently on the flowing veil of the gown. Her expression softened, her voice lowering to a near whisper. ”This gown,” she said, ”is called The Crown of Dawn.”

She looked toward Missy. ”You called it A Queen Born to Shine.”

Her head tilted slightly, a faint, sorrowful smile touching her lips. ”No. My mother never believed queens were born. They are forged.”

Her gaze swept across the audience, her voice gaining quiet strength. ”The real inspiration behind this gown is ’A woman who survives countless nights of darkness before becoming her own sunrise.’”

She paused, letting the words sink in.

”The crown isn’t given by others,” she said softly. ”It is earned. With sacrifice. With loneliness. And with courage.”

Her eyes glistened, but her voice remained steady. ”My mother always believed that a queen is not someone who sits on a throne. A queen is someone who keeps walking... even after losing everything.”

The hall was utterly still.

Even the air seemed to hold its breath.

Missy’s face had turned the color of ash. Emily’s hands trembled violently at her sides. She had stolen those discarded sketches years ago, but she had never seen the completed gowns. She had never known that Maria had left behind a secret only her loved ones could recognize.

Now, that secret had destroyed everything.

Mindy turned back to the audience, her voice calm and clear. ”My mother never believed clothes were just fabric,” she said. ”They carried emotions. Dreams. Pain. And hope.”

Her eyes softened as she looked at the three gowns. ”So every completed dress she truly loved received one final stitch—a tiny star. It represented family. It represented home. It represented the people she wanted to protect.”

Then she looked directly at Missy. ”You copied the dress,” she said quietly. ”But you never understood its soul.”

Missy’s breathing grew ragged. Her eyes darted wildly between the gowns, the stars, and the audience that now stared at her with disgust. ”No!” she screamed. ”Those are mine! They’re mine! They’re all mine!”

Her voice cracked, shrill and desperate. ”You’re lying! You’re making everything up!”

Mindy didn’t flinch. She simply smiled—a calm, almost pitying smile. ”Really?”

She walked toward the giant screen, her steps slow and deliberate. ”You said every thread belongs to you. You said you know every stitch. You said these are your creations.”

She turned, her eyes locking on Missy’s. ”So tell everyone...”

Her hand lifted, pointing toward the hidden star.

”When did you embroider this?”

The question struck like lightning.

Missy’s mouth opened, then closed. No sound came out. Her throat worked, but no words formed.

Cold sweat rolled down her forehead.

The silence that followed was deafening.

Raymond’s entire body began to shake. His gaze moved from the gowns to the tiny stars, then finally to the woman standing proudly on the stage—Maria’s daughter.

Memories flooded his mind. Maria sketching late into the night. Maria smiling as she sewed. Maria’s voice, soft and warm, saying, ”Every finished masterpiece deserves a little star.”

His breathing grew uneven. His chest tightened.

”I... I forgot...”

The words slipped out, barely audible.

For the first time in over ten years, Raymond Hawthorne doubted himself.

Drake stood frozen beside him. He remembered being a child, sneaking into Maria’s studio, watching her work. Every time he entered, she would quickly hide whatever she was sewing, then smile and say, ”It’s a secret.”

Back then, he had pouted, thinking she was teasing him.

Now he understood.

It had never been meant for him.

Jagger’s fists slowly unclenched. His face turned pale, his voice barely a whisper. ”Then... everything Mindy said six months ago... was true?”

No one answered him.

They didn’t need to.

The truth was already written across every face in the room.

Mindy’s voice broke the silence once more, calm and steady. ”Miss Hawthorne,” she said, turning toward Missy. ”Earlier, you asked why no one had ever seen these designs.”

She looked toward the judges. ”The answer is simple. My mother wasn’t satisfied with them. She discarded them. They were placed inside an old storage box—never published, never worn, never sold.”

Her gaze shifted to Emily. ”But someone searched through her studio after she died. Someone took those discarded drafts. And years later, they suddenly became... ’original creations.’”

Emily’s face turned ghostly white. Her lips parted, but no sound came out.

Missy screamed. ”No! Stop talking! They’re mine! I designed them!”

Her voice echoed through the hall, high and hysterical. But no one believed her anymore. Not after the stars. Not after the videos. Not after the hidden signature that only Maria’s family knew.

Jonathan Harper rose from his seat, his usually composed face dark with anger. ”I have spent forty years protecting original designers,” he said, his voice trembling with fury. ”And today, I watched a thief stand proudly on this stage. I am ashamed.”

Selena Marwin stood beside him, her expression cold. ”As am I.”

Erwin Bright slowly rose, his voice carrying through the hall like a verdict. ”Effective immediately,” he said, ”Miss Missy Hawthorne is officially disqualified.”

The words struck like thunder.

”This panel will conduct a complete investigation into every design you have ever submitted to Bright Group,” he continued. ”If these gowns also belong to Maria Wilson, last year’s championship will be revoked.”

He turned toward Adam Gray, who sat quietly in his wheelchair, his expression unreadable. ”It shall be awarded to the rightful designer—Mr. Adam Gray.”

The hall erupted into thunderous applause.

The sound was deafening, a wave of justice crashing through the room.

Adam remained calm, his eyes steady, but beside him, Steven smiled for the first time that day.

Missy’s legs gave out. She collapsed onto the stage, her hands clutching at the floor as if she could hold onto something—anything.

”No...” she whispered. ”No... my trophy... my reputation... my future...”

Her voice broke into sobs. ”It’s all over...”

She wept uncontrollably, her cries echoing through the hall. But this time, no one pitied her.

Not even the livestream.

The comments flooded the screen in a torrent of vindication.

[Justice for Mindy Wilson!]

[Return Adam’s trophy!]

[Maria Wilson deserves justice!]

[Missy stole everything!]

[The real genius was standing in front of us all along!]

Mindy stood still, watching the broken woman before her. There was no triumph in her eyes. No satisfaction. Only calm.

Because this was never about revenge.

It was about truth.

She turned slowly, her gaze sweeping across the Hawthorne family. Raymond. Drake. Jagger.

Each of them looked shattered, their faces pale, their eyes hollow.

”You all believed her,” Mindy said quietly. ”Without asking me even once.”

Her voice was soft, but every word struck like a blade.

”You never wanted the truth,” she continued. ”You only wanted someone to blame.”

The words hung in the air, heavy and final.

None of them could lift their heads.

For the first time, the Hawthorne family had nothing left to say.

The applause continued to thunder around them, but Mindy stood unmoving, her expression serene.

The stars gleamed faintly beneath the stage lights—three tiny stitches of silver, glowing like fragments of Maria’s soul.

They were proof of love. Proof of legacy. Proof that some things could never be stolen.

And as the world watched, Mindy Wilson stood beneath those lights, calm and unshaken, the daughter of a woman whose art had outlived betrayal.

The storm had passed.

But its echoes would haunt the Hawthorne name forever.
