BRUSHSTROKES OF REVENGE

Silence filled the living room like a suffocating fog. No one reached for the photographs scattered across the coffee table. No one dared to move them. Every pair of eyes remained fixed on the glossy images that lay exposed under the chandelier’s cold light.

The air was thick with disbelief, the kind that made even breathing feel heavy. The photographs were ordinary enough on their own—business galas, charity auctions, luxury banquets, award ceremonies—but together, they told a story no one wanted to admit.

In one image, Layton adjusted Missy’s shawl as they entered a ballroom, his hand lingering just a moment too long.

In another, they were laughing together, their faces turned toward each other with an ease that looked far too intimate for two people who were supposedly just family friends.

Several photographs had been taken from angles that made them appear closer than they were, but when placed side by side, the illusion became undeniable.

Anyone unfamiliar with the truth would draw the same conclusion.

They looked like lovers.

Missy’s face drained of color. Her lips parted, but no sound came out at first. Then she stood abruptly, her chair scraping against the marble floor.

”No... no, it’s not like that,” she stammered, shaking her head as if denial alone could erase the evidence in front of her.

”These were taken by journalists. They always choose strange angles to create gossip. There’s nothing between Layton and me.” Her voice trembled, but her eyes darted quickly toward the others, gauging their reactions.

She forced a trembling smile, the kind that had fooled people her entire life. ”We’ve known each other since childhood. We attend the same events. Isn’t that normal? I’ve always treated Layton as family.”

Her voice cracked on the last word, and tears began to slide down her cheeks, glistening under the light. It was another flawless performance, one she had perfected over the years.

Mike, standing quietly behind Layton, watched the scene unfold with a neutral expression. Inside, however, he was speechless. Are they serious? he thought.

Anyone with eyes could see how misleading those photographs looked. And President Knight—his ever-composed, calculating boss—had never once considered how Miss Mindy must have felt attending every gala alone while another woman stood beside her husband. Mike wisely kept those thoughts to himself.

His monthly salary was far too valuable to risk.

Jagger was the first to recover from the shock.

He leaned forward, his expression hardening into one of disappointment.

”You’re just jealous,” he said, his tone filled with certainty.

”Missy never made a scene after you married Layton. Why can’t you be as understanding as she is?”

He gestured toward the photographs dismissively. ”These pictures prove nothing.”

Drake nodded in agreement, his voice calm but cold. ”They’re business partners. People attend events together all the time. There isn’t anything inappropriate here.”

Sonia folded her arms across her chest, her patience clearly gone. ”I’ve had enough of this,” she said sharply.

”You’ve already signed the divorce papers. Stop creating unnecessary drama. Call your friend and remove the article.”

Emily, ever the picture of maternal grace, gently wiped the tears from Missy’s face before sighing helplessly.

”Mindy,” she said softly, her tone dripping with false sympathy, ”I’ve always treated you like my own daughter.

Missy has always considered you her sister. You’re misunderstanding everything. Please don’t ruin her reputation over your own jealousy.”

Mindy listened quietly, her expression unreadable. She didn’t interrupt, didn’t defend herself, didn’t even flinch at their accusations.

When the room finally fell silent, she smiled—not sadly, not bitterly, but with a quiet amusement that sent a chill through the air. ”Amazing,” she said softly.

Her calm voice immediately drew everyone’s attention. She looked around the room slowly, her gaze steady and unhurried.

”So many people... yet not a single functioning brain.”

The words landed like a slap. The room froze. Even Mike nearly coughed in shock. Did Miss Mindy just insult everyone?

Jagger’s expression darkened. ”What did you just say?” he demanded.

Mindy ignored him completely. Instead, she reached forward and picked up one of the photographs between two fingers.

She held it up, the glossy paper catching the light. ”Tell me honestly,” she said, her tone deceptively calm.

”If you saw these pictures in tomorrow’s newspaper, would you believe these two were simply friends?”

No one answered. Because they all knew the truth.

Mindy placed the photograph back onto the table and smiled, the curve of her lips sharp and cold.

”I wonder,” she mused aloud, ”what headline would attract the most readers?”

She pretended to think seriously, tapping her chin lightly.

”’President of Knight Enterprises secretly accompanies another woman to every public event.’”

She paused, then tilted her head. ”’The mysterious woman beside President Knight finally exposed.’”

Her smile widened. ”’Or perhaps... Who exactly is the real Mrs. Knight?’”

Missy’s breathing grew uneven. Emily’s fingers tightened around her daughter’s hand, both women visibly panicking.

Raymond’s face turned an alarming shade of red. ”You wouldn’t dare,” he said, his voice low and dangerous.

Mindy laughed softly, the sound light and almost musical. ”Why wouldn’t I?” she asked.

Her eyes met his, calm and unflinching. ”The photographs are already with Uncle Andrew. I simply need to make one phone call. And tomorrow, the entire city will know exactly who the so-called ’mistress’ is.”

Missy’s lips turned pale.

Emily’s composure finally cracked. ”Mindy!” she cried. ”You can’t do this! This will destroy Missy’s future!”

The irony almost made Mindy laugh. Destroy Missy’s future? What about the future they had destroyed for her?

What about the marriage they had ruined piece by piece? What about the life that had ended with a bullet from a roof-top after beaten up like a rag doll? Compared to that, this was nothing.

For the first time since the confrontation began, Layton finally spoke. ”What do you want?” His voice was calm, cold, steady.

Yet everyone noticed something different. He wasn’t questioning her. He wasn’t ordering her. He was negotiating.

Mindy turned toward him, her eyes meeting his for several long seconds. Then she smiled politely.

”Now,” she said softly, ”that’s the right question, President Knight.”

She no longer called him Layton.

Not once. Not even by accident.

Instead, she addressed him the same way every stranger in Greendale did. ”President Knight.” The unfamiliar title lingered in the air like a quiet accusation.

Layton’s expression didn’t change, but Mike noticed the tiny tightening of his jaw. The distance between them had never felt wider.

Mindy folded her hands neatly in her lap. ”I’ve already signed the divorce agreement,” she said.

”I won’t make things difficult for you. I have only one condition.”

Everyone unconsciously leaned forward.

She turned her gaze toward Raymond, then Drake, then Jagger, meeting each of their eyes in turn. ”I want to sever all ties with the Hawthorne family.”

The words dropped into the silence like stones into deep water.

”I don’t want to be a Hawthorne anymore.”

Every word landed like a hammer.

”I want an official public announcement,” she continued.

”A legal severance agreement. From the day it’s signed, I will have nothing to do with the Hawthorne family.” She paused, her voice softening but losing none of its strength.

”I don’t want your money. I don’t want your inheritance. I don’t want your shares. I don’t want your protection. I don’t want anything. I only want my freedom.”

There was no anger in her tone, no tears, no resentment.

She spoke as though discussing a simple business contract. Yet somehow, those calm words struck harder than any scream ever could.

Raymond stared at his daughter, his mind blank.

For a moment, he couldn’t comprehend what she had just said. The words didn’t make sense. They couldn’t.

This was the same little girl who had once chased after his affection with wide, hopeful eyes.

The same daughter who had celebrated every birthday waiting for him to come home.

The same child who had cried for days when he missed her school competition.

Memories flooded his mind, unbidden and relentless. He saw her as a child again, tugging at his sleeve with paint-stained fingers.

”Daddy, will you come to my art show?” she had asked, her voice full of excitement. He remembered the way her eyes had lit up when he smiled at her, the way she used to wait by the door every evening just to greet him.

He remembered how her smile had faded the first time he walked past her to greet Emily instead. He remembered how she had stopped waiting altogether.

And now she was sitting across from him, calm and composed, telling him she didn’t want to be his daughter anymore.

Something cracked inside Raymond’s chest.

For the first time in years, he saw her clearly—not the troublemaker Emily had painted her to be, not the jealous daughter he had convinced himself she was, but the little girl he had lost the day Maria died.

The daughter he had abandoned.

The daughter he had failed. Guilt, regret, confusion, and denial crashed together inside him, leaving him breathless.

Drake’s lips parted slightly, but no words came out.

Jagger frowned deeply, his hands tightening into fists.

Neither of them had expected this. Emily and Missy exchanged a quick, uneasy glance.

They had wanted Mindy isolated, divorced, humiliated. But they had never expected her to willingly abandon the Hawthorne name.

Even Layton remained silent. He had assumed she wanted to save their marriage.

He had assumed she wanted the family’s acceptance.

He had assumed she would never let go. But looking at the woman sitting calmly across from him, he began to wonder if he had been wrong about her all along.

That realization unsettled him more than the photographs ever could.

Mindy looked at Raymond’s face and saw the shock, the confusion, and something that might have been pain.

For a fleeting moment, a small, buried part of her remembered what it felt like to love this man.

She remembered when he had been her hero, when his smile could light up her world, when she believed he would protect her forever.

But that was before Maria died. Before Emily’s poison seeped into every corner of their home. Before Missy’s return. Before eight years of neglect. Before the warehouse. Before the fall. Before death.

The little girl who had loved him so fiercely was gone.

She had died long before the bullet.. before the fall...

What remained was a woman who had learned the hard way that you cannot force people to love you. And she was done trying.

Mindy sat perfectly still, her hands folded neatly in her lap. She didn’t fidget.

She didn’t look away. She simply waited, her expression serene, as though she had all the time in the world.

The silence stretched on.

And in that silence, everyone in the room began to understand the same terrible truth.

This wasn’t a threat.

This wasn’t a tantrum.

This wasn’t something they could dismiss or ignore.

Mindy —had made her decision.

And she was waiting for theirs.
