Rebirth: The Courtyard Bride Is Cool and Radiant

Chapter 298: Chapter 298 Mom, I remember you said Aunt Ding’s daughter also has the surname Chu.

Shi Jingfang left the hospital and headed straight to the supply and marketing cooperative. She bought quite a few items, preparing to stay the night with her daughter at the Agricultural Reclamation Group before returning to Beijing the next day.

Worried about missing the return ox cart to the Agricultural Reclamation Group, she jogged all the way to where the carts were stationed.

Fortunately, when she arrived, the last ox cart was just about to depart, and she caught it just in time.

Seeing her laden with bags, someone on the cart asked, ”Comrade, are you here to visit family?”

Shi Jingfang smiled and nodded. ”Yes, my daughter is an educated youth here. I came to see her.”

She didn’t want to reveal too much about her daughter to strangers, so she closed her eyes and pretended to nap.

Seeing this, the others felt it would be impolite to ask more questions.

However, she listened as the people on the cart gossiped about this and that, picking up quite a few rumors about the Agricultural Reclamation Group.

By the time the cart arrived at the Agricultural Reclamation Group, dusk had settled. Carrying her things, she walked past the health clinic and inadvertently glanced inside.

That one glance made her stop in her tracks. There’s something very familiar about the person inside, she thought.

Just then, she heard someone call out, ”Doctor Chu, you haven’t left yet?”

”A patient with a sprained ankle came in earlier. I just finished treating them, so I’m about to leave.”

Shi Jingfang then remembered seeing this young woman a few days ago. The more she looked at her, the more familiar she seemed. But I just can’t quite place her, she mused.

Yunyi had, in fact, also noticed the person outside. Recognizing her as the woman from the other day, Yunyi figured she’s probably waiting for someone, and didn’t give it much more thought.

She went straight back to her office to wash her hands and change, ready to leave for the day.

Seeing the person leave, Shi Jingfang continued toward her daughter’s lodgings.

Ye Wenhui had just gotten off a tractor when she spotted Shi Jingfang walking ahead. ”Mom!” she called out.

Hearing her daughter’s voice, Shi Jingfang turned. ”Were you just at work?”

Ye Wenhui nodded. ”Yes. Have you finished your errands?”

As they talked, Ye Wenhui took one of the bags from Shi Jingfang’s hand. ”I’ll take you to our canteen later for some pickled cabbage buns. They’re really delicious.”

Shi Jingfang looked at her daughter, covered in dirt and dust, and felt a pang of distress. My daughter, whom I raised so delicately, is enduring such hardship in the countryside.

A daughter knows her mother best; Wenhui naturally sensed her mother’s change in mood. ”Mom, it’s just a bit of dirt,” she said. ”Everyone looks like this. We don’t find it that hard.”

Reassured by her daughter’s words, Shi Jingfang said quietly, ”When I get back, I’ll talk to your dad. I’ll ask him to keep an eye out for a job for you next year. If there’s a suitable one, we’ll bring you back to Beijing.”

Ye Wenhui didn’t object. ”There’s no need to rush. I’ll come back if there’s a suitable job. If not, don’t force it. Tell Dad not to take any risks for my sake.”

The mother and daughter continued chatting as they walked towards the dormitories.

From time to time, people came up to greet them, all with envious looks on their faces.

Ye Wenhui thought of Ye Wenjuan. ”Mom, did you visit Wenjuan at the hospital?”

”Yes. When I went over, I found out you had returned to the Agricultural Reclamation Group. I hurried to the supply and marketing cooperative, afraid I’d miss the last ox cart. Otherwise, finding transport would have been a hassle. I’m going back to Beijing tomorrow, so I wanted to stay with you for one night.”

”I came back the day your Little Aunt arrived. I really didn’t want to deal with her and her daughter.”

”She should be discharged soon. Your Little Aunt definitely can’t stay that long. You’ll have to look after Wenjuan for a while after she’s out.”

After freshening up and grabbing their meal containers, they headed to the canteen. ”Mom,” Ye Wenhui said, ”the canteen has soybean pickled cabbage buns tonight, and vegetable egg soup. It’s delicious!”

Seeing her daughter still so optimistic, Shi Jingfang felt somewhat reassured. ”By the way,” she asked, ”have you visited Aunt Zhiran’s daughter?”

”Oh! I’ve been working ever since I got here and haven’t had a chance to visit. How about I take a day off tomorrow and go with you? Songling Village isn’t too far from here.”

”Alright. It’s not easy for me to make this trip, so I really should see her to feel at ease. I wonder if the child has adapted yet?”

”Don’t worry. There’s nothing one can’t adapt to; it’s just a matter of time.”

They continued talking as they entered the canteen.

Just as they got in line, Shi Jingfang saw Yunyi again, who was in another queue. She tugged at her daughter’s sleeve. ”Wenhui, look at that young woman over there. Doesn’t she look like your little aunt?”

Ye Wenhui followed her mother’s gaze. ”That’s Doctor Chu from our health clinic. Don’t let her age fool you; I hear her medical skills are quite good.”

Shi Jingfang muttered to herself, ”Her surname is Chu?”

Ye Wenhui heard her mother’s murmur. ”Yes, she is. I heard she’s also an educated youth from Beijing...”

At this, she suddenly paused. ”Mom, did you say Aunt Zhiran’s daughter is also surnamed Chu?”

Shi Jingfang nodded, a little puzzled. ”Yes. What about it?”

Ye Wenhui’s eyes lit up as she stared at Yunyi. ”Mom, could she be Aunt Zhiran’s daughter, the one you asked me to visit? She was transferred from Songling Village and is also from Beijing. I heard she learned her medical skills from her family elders. I remember you said Aunt Zhiran’s father-in-law was a doctor, right?”
