Rebirth: The Courtyard Bride Is Cool and Radiant

Chapter 276: Chapter 276: It Seems the Young Girl Isn’t Averse to the Idea of Marriage

The group found a place to sit down when they overheard a male youth complaining from the next table, ”I thought we would have fried potato chips today, but it’s still stewed radishes and soybeans.”

Another youth beside him laughed. ”Be content; at least there are radishes and soybeans to eat. In a little while, we won’t even have radishes.”

A female youth chimed in, ”These mixed flour steamed buns today were definitely made with sprouted wheat flour again. They’re so terribly sticky.”

Yunyi listened to their conversation and looked at the mixed flour steamed bun in her hand, thinking, Was my decision wrong? Eating at the canteen saves trouble, but this food is truly hard to put into words. It seems I still need to find time to prepare more food to store in my space so I can supplement my meals.

Zheng Xuewen saw Yunyi staring at the mixed flour steamed bun in her hand and said, ”I heard from Chef Lu that this batch of sprouted wheat flour is almost gone. You’re lucky to have arrived late; you won’t have to eat it for many more meals.”

Qiao Wenyu popped a piece of radish into his mouth. After swallowing, he said, ”A horse from the Wulian’s herd had an accident in the meadow today. It was injured, and I hear it might not make it.”

Then he lowered his voice. ”We might even get horse meat buns tomorrow.”

Hearing this, Zheng Xuewen’s eyes lit up. ”Really?”

Qiao Wenyu nodded while stuffing a mixed flour steamed bun into his mouth. ”That’s what I heard from the Wulian folks when we were setting up the warm sheds.”

By the time they finished eating, it had already grown dark.

Qiao Wenyu and the others had intended to walk Yunyi back, but she declined. ”Alright, you’ve all had a tiring day, and you have work tomorrow. Go back and rest. It’s not far, and there are still plenty of people out, so don’t trouble yourselves.”

Considering Yunyi’s skills, they didn’t insist.

Yunyi hadn’t been back in her small courtyard long when she heard a knock. ”Who is it?”

Huo Jingrui’s voice came from outside the main gate. ”It’s me.”

Yunyi opened the door. ”Are you done with your errands? Have you eaten?”

Huo Jingrui lifted the aluminum lunch box in his hand. ”All done. I brought back some braised pork to satisfy your cravings.”

Yunyi knew at once that he hadn’t eaten yet. She let him in, saying, ”There are still some mixed-flour flower rolls I steamed earlier. I’ll go reheat a few for you.”

Huo Jingrui handed the lunch box to Yunyi. ”Just get them out; I can do it myself.”

With that, he turned and stepped out again for a moment. ”I almost forgot this.”

He then came back in carrying a small clay stove. ”I saw this for sale at the supply and sales cooperative, so I brought one back. It’ll be more convenient for you.”

After setting it down, he went to light the firewood himself. ”Oh, by the way, I’ve arranged for some coal balls to be delivered tomorrow, along with a few other small things.”

Yunyi waited for him to pause before asking, ”Now that your business is done, does this mean you’re leaving soon?”

Huo Jingrui stood up, looking at Yunyi with a hint of reluctance. ”Yes, I have to leave after lunch tomorrow.”

Then, he reached out and took her shoulders. ”Would you be willing to come live with me in the army family housing?”

Yunyi chuckled. ”I won’t be eighteen until next October. Besides, I’ve only just arrived in Hua’an, and we’ve only just confirmed our relationship. Isn’t that too fast?”

She wasn’t actually opposed to marrying so soon. It was just that she wouldn’t turn eighteen until next year, so it was still too early to get a marriage certificate. Moreover, she didn’t know anything about his family situation yet, and marriage, after all, isn’t just about two people.

Hearing Yunyi say this, he quickly changed his approach. ”How about this, I’ll submit the marriage application first?”

Seeing Yunyi remain silent, he felt a surge of joy. Looks like the little lass isn’t opposed to marriage after all!

But just as he was feeling relieved, he heard Yunyi say, ”You investigated my family situation so thoroughly before, turning it upside down. What about your family? I should at least get to know a bit about them first, right?”

Hearing this, Huo Jingrui admitted, ”That’s my fault.”

For a moment, he was genuinely afraid Yunyi would find his family situation too complicated. After a brief pause to choose his words, he said, ”My family situation is... a little complicated. But don’t worry, they’re all quite easy to get along with.”

Yunyi saw his guilty look and found it somewhat amusing. ”Go on, tell me. Let’s hear just how complicated it is.”
