Rebirth: The Courtyard Bride Is Cool and Radiant

Chapter 297: Chapter 297 None of Your Business

Yunyi sighed inwardly at everyone’s discussion. Sometimes, it really doesn’t pay to be too kind-hearted, she thought.

Work at the reservoir had been halted for three days due to an accident, so everyone from the Agricultural Reclamation Group was resting these past few days.

When Zhang Baoxiang arrived at the hospital, laden with bags, she saw her daughter hopping on one foot, using the bed rail for support. ”Oh, dear! Why are you all alone? Where’s Wenhui?”

Ye Wenjuan turned her head. ”Mom, what are you doing here?”

Zhang Baoxiang put down her bags. ”Your leg is injured, and you’re still hopping about! What if you hurt it again?”

She reached out to steady Ye Wenjuan, her gaze falling on her daughter’s splinted leg. ”Wasn’t your cousin taking care of you? Where did she go?”

Others in the ward, overhearing them, sounded rather displeased. One spoke up, ”Your daughter just said she wanted boiled eggs. The young lady went to the canteen to buy them.”

Zhang Baoxiang sensed the speaker’s disapproval. ”Oh, is that so? My apologies, I wasn’t aware.”

Just as she finished speaking, Ye Wenhui returned with an enamel mug. ”Aunt, you’re here! That’s wonderful.”

Ye Wenhui was thoroughly fed up with waiting on her cousin. She’s so incredibly fussy! If it weren’t for Uncle’s sake, I’d give her a piece of my mind and walk right out, she fumed silently. ”Wenjuan, here are your boiled eggs.”

She put the enamel mug on the bedside table and turned to Zhang Baoxiang. ”Aunt, now that you’re here, I can finally go back, wash up, and change my clothes.”

Zhang Baoxiang looked at Ye Wenhui. ”Wenhui, I’ve only just arrived and don’t know my way around. If you leave now, I won’t even know where to get food.”

The woman nearby spoke up again, clearly annoyed, ”Everyone’s clueless when they first arrive. If you’re not familiar with the place, it’s not a big deal. You’ve got a mouth, haven’t you? Just ask! You think no one will tell you?”

Zhang Baoxiang scowled at the woman. ”What’s it to you? I’m talking to my own niece. This is none of your business!”

Ye Wenhui quickly interjected, ”Aunt, please, let’s not argue. The hospital isn’t that big. I’ll show you around in a moment. It’s just that my clothes are filthy, and I really need to change. I can’t be seen like this.”

Before Aunt arrived, I was Wenjuan’s cousin, so of course, I had to look after her. But now that her own mother is here, I don’t want to stay any longer. Otherwise, I’m afraid I’ll end up having to wait on another person.

Besides, I came directly from the reservoir construction site and I’m still in my work clothes. They definitely need changing.

Although Zhang Baoxiang was reluctant to let Ye Wenhui leave, her clothes were undeniably filthy, so she couldn’t very well tell her not to go. ”Alright then, go get changed. But you must come back quickly.”

Ye Wenhui didn’t reply. She simply gave Zhang Baoxiang a quick tour of the hospital, pointing out the important places, and then left to find the ox-cart heading back to the Agricultural Reclamation Group.

I’ve been taking care of Wenjuan by myself for days. Anything I can do, Aunt can certainly do too. It’s her own daughter; if she’s not going to look after her, who else is she expecting to?

After resting for two days, Ye Wenhui went back to work, not even considering another visit to the hospital.

Meanwhile, after finishing her official duties, Shi Jingfang went to the county hospital, only to find out that her daughter, Ye Wenhui, had already returned to the Agricultural Reclamation Group. Zhang Baoxiang immediately started complaining to her, ”Sister-in-law, Wenhui went back days ago and hasn’t returned. I’m here all alone taking care of Wenjuan, and I’m about to drop dead from exhaustion!”

Shi Jingfang wasn’t about to coddle her. ”Wasn’t Wenhui taking care of Wenjuan all by herself during those days you weren’t here? Are you saying an adult like you can’t even compare to a child?”

She put down the fruit she had brought. ”Wenjuan, now that your mom is here to look after you, your Second Aunt can be at ease. You focus on getting better. I have other matters to attend to, so I must be going.”

After exchanging a few polite words with Qiu Baojuan, she left the hospital, having no desire to listen to any more of Zhang Baoxiang’s grievances.
