Rebirth: The Courtyard Bride Is Cool and Radiant

Chapter 275: Chapter 275: Are You Craving Meat So Much That You’re Hallucinating Now?

When Yunyi stepped out of the space, the sky had already darkened. Worried that Huo Jingrui would be back, she decided not to go up the mountain.

So she changed her clothes and headed toward the foothills.

Luckily, the east side of the clinic was right at the foot of the mountain. In the freezing weather, no one noticed her.

With the help of her Qinggong skills, she quickly reached the place where the meat was being smoked, adjusted the position of the meat, replenished the wood, and then headed back down the mountain.

After a few more days of smoking, this batch of smoked meat would be ready, and she wouldn’t have to keep running back and forth like this.

To avoid attracting attention, she still snapped a dead tree on the mid-slope and carried it down. She was also lucky enough to spot a rabbit at the foot of the mountain. She sent a stone flying, bringing the rabbit down.

Good, that would make for a nice extra dish in the evening.

Fortunately, she had prepared in advance. Before she reached her door, she saw Qiao Wenyu, Wei Zijia, Zheng Xuewen, and Song Jiayao waiting at the gate.

When Qiao Wenyu saw Yunyi approaching with the dead tree, he quickly went to meet her. ”You really can’t stay idle. Even though it didn’t snow much yesterday, there’s still snow on the mountain path. How could you go up the mountain alone?”

After speaking, he noticed the rabbit in Yunyi’s other hand, and his eyes lit up with excitement. ”You caught a rabbit?”

Yunyi smiled, looking at the rabbit in her hand. ”Yeah, I got lucky and stumbled upon it at the foot of the mountain. We can have it as an extra dish later.”

After saying that, she turned to the others. ”What brings you all here?”

Wei Zijia came over with a smile. ”We came to find you to go to the canteen together, but the door was locked tight. We thought you went out with your boyfriend.”

Yunyi took out her keys and opened the door. ”He left this afternoon to handle some business. I had nothing to do, so I thought I’d go up the mountain to gather more firewood. If heavy snow seals the mountains, it’ll be harder to go up later.”

Though Qiao Wenyu wanted to help her split the dead tree, Yunyi stopped him. ”It’s getting late. Let’s go get our meals at the canteen first.”

She didn’t want to delay everyone’s dinner on her account.

Yunyi put the rabbit under a basket in the kitchen, planning to prepare it when she returned and stew it for them another day when she had time.

As the group left the house, Song Jiayao, who had been quiet all along, suddenly spoke. ”Why do I smell smoked meat?”

Zheng Xuewen, who was walking in front, turned to look at her. ”Are you craving meat so much you’re hallucinating?”

Song Jiayao glared at him. ”I have a sensitive sense of smell. I’m not hallucinating. Besides, I just had meat at Chu Zhiqing’s place yesterday. Am I really that greedy?”

Everyone else took her words as a joke, but Yunyi glanced at her. It seemed she would have to be more cautious in the future and make sure to cover her tracks when she went up the mountain to add wood.

Wanting to change the subject, Yunyi asked, ”Are you all going to work on the reservoir tomorrow?”

Qiao Wenyu nodded. ”Yes, the leaders from headquarters already went there today to set up the warm sheds. Starting tomorrow, lunch will be provided free of charge to the educated youth participating in the reservoir construction.”

This reminded Yunyi of something. ”Is it far from here?”

Qiao Wenyu shook his head. ”Not very far, just about four or five miles away.”

Chatting like this, they arrived at the canteen.

Yunyi’s arrival caused quite a stir. ”Hey, look! The woman with Qiao Wenyu and the others is the new doctor.”

”Indeed, just as I heard, she’s really pretty.”

”You guys have no chance. I saw her today; she has a partner, and he’s very handsome and capable. She wouldn’t go for someone like you.”

”What are you talking about? I just complimented her. Why are you bringing up liking her or not?”

”I’m just reminding you not to bite off more than you can chew.”

This conversation was clearly born of a girl’s jealousy, and the guy was obviously clueless, not understanding the girl’s feelings.

When it was their turn to get their meals, Chef Lu, who was inside drinking water, smiled and greeted Yunyi, ”How is it? Are you settling in okay?”

Yunyi smiled and nodded at him. ”It’s quite good.”

As she finished speaking, the girl serving the food adjusted her ladle, clearly adding quite a few more soybeans to Yunyi’s portion.

Yunyi smiled at her. ”Thank you.”

The food at Hua’an Farm Reclamation wasn’t actually very good. Although they could eat at the canteen, it was only during spring sowing, summer weeding, wheat harvest, autumn harvest, or festive holidays that the regiment would slaughter a pig and the canteen would improve its meals.

Otherwise, Qiao Wenyu, Zheng Xuewen, and Wei Zijia wouldn’t have chased a rabbit deep into the mountains, nearly losing their lives.
