Chapter 2007: A Strange Mission

Editor: EndlessFantasy Translation

“Since that’s the case, let’s not wait anymore. We can just go over and deal with him now.”

“That isn’t possible. We agreed that both sides would work on this case together. If we go over early, what will happen? No leader likes a subordinate like that.”

“Sigh, so troublesome.” Lin Yi stretched and said.

“If there’s nothing else, I’ll head off. Call me if you need anything.”

“Just keep your phone on.”

“Understood. I won’t screw up.”

After chatting with Li Xianghui, Lin Yi turned around and went to Zhang Peng and Zhang Zixin.

He wanted to see if there were any cases to trigger the system mission.

[System Mission: Arrest the real culprit. Reward: 200,000 proficiency points.]

Just as Lin Yi was about to leave, the system notification sounded in his mind.

The proficiency points offered by the system as a reward was not insignificant. It was a total of 200,000.

According to his previous mission experience, a mission with a reward of 200,000 proficiency points was not easy to complete.

But what was the so-called arrest of the real culprit?

Was it the Bai Yongshou that Li Xianghui had just told him about?

Lin Yi thought about it and felt that something was wrong.

Bai Yongshou was an established target. As long as he was caught, this matter would be considered a success.

However, the system’s mission could not be so simple. There must be something else going on.

“System, are there any other clues for this mission to capture the real murderer?”

The system remained silent.

“What are you doing? Are you mute? I’m asking you a question,” Lin Yi said.

However, the system still did not answer.

Lin Yi pursed his lips. With the system’s personality, it probably wouldn’t say anything.

However, in the current situation, other than catching Bai Yongshou, there was nothing else going on. How could he catch the real culprit?!

After thinking for a while, Lin Yi couldn’t figure it out. He went to Zhang Peng’s office and realized that he was the only one there.

“Brother Lin, you’re here. I haven’t seen you for a long time.”

Seeing Lin Yi enter, Zhang Peng stood up to greet him.

“I have something to do at home. I’ve been busy,” Lin Yi replied casually and looked around the office.

“Why are you alone? Where are Brother Zhang and Zixin?”

“There was a dispute in an old neighborhood. They went over to resolve it.” Zhang Peng lit a cigarette and yawned.

“Yesterday, I went drinking with friends and didn’t get home until after 3 a.m., so I decided to take it easy and stayed on duty at the precinct,” Zhang Peng said.

Lin Yi nodded. “I don’t have much going on. You just do your work, don’t worry about me.”

“Let’s talk later. I have a report to handle urgently.”

“Sure.”

With nothing else to do, Lin Yi pulled up a chair and sat down.

Aside from the system’s mission, he was also worried about how to handle Ji Qingyan’s parents.

Her mother’s birthday was coming up, and he needed to prepare a gift. This matter couldn’t be delayed any longer.

“Alright, I understand. I’ll head over now.”

As Lin Yi pondered these matters, he saw Zhang Peng hang up the phone and turn his attention to him.

“Got a case?”

“A debtor is refusing to pay, and the plaintiff called the police. I need to handle it.”

“Let’s go. I’ll come with you since I’m free,” Lin Yi said.

“Then let’s get moving, quickly.”

After tidying up his clothes, the two drove the precinct’s car to the scene.

“Did the dispatch center give you the details?”

“Just a rough idea,” Zhang Peng said.

“The complainant is a middle-aged woman. Her father passed away six months ago, and she was the one taking care of him while her brother didn’t do much. The father left his house and estate to her, but now her brother is living in the house and refuses to move out. After months of disputes, she finally called the police.”

“In other words, the father left everything to the daughter because she took care of him, and the son, who sees only money, doesn’t want to give up the house, leading to this conflict, right?”

“That’s about it,” Zhang Peng said.

“But why do you look so unphased?”

Zhang Peng lit a cigarette and smiled nonchalantly.

“Brother Lin, if this were in the past, I would have cursed that man as a scumbag. But after becoming a police officer and dealing with so many bizarre cases, I truly understand the saying ‘an upright official finds it hard to settle family disputes.ʼ”

“Have you gained new insights?” Lin Yi laughed.

“Exactly,” Zhang Peng said.

“When people have conflicts, whether they’re men or women, they always see themselves as the victims and believe they’re not at fault. So, in cases like this, we can’t take one side’s story at face value. We need to hear both sides to understand the real situation before making a decision.”

“Well said,” Lin Yi laughed.

“You sound like a seasoned cop now.”

“Come on, Brother Lin, don’t tease me. Compared to you, I’m still far behind,” Zhang Peng said.

“But I’ve come to believe that seeing is believing.”

“You’re progressing.”

“Haha, Brother Lin, don’t flatter me. If you get a chance, help a brother out. I’d love to experience what it’s like to get promoted and rich,” Zhang Peng joked.

“When your wife really dies, I’ll make sure you get promoted and rich.”

“F*ck, you’re too bad, haha…”

Soon, Zhang Peng followed the address provided by the dispatcher and arrived at the scene.

In front of them was a residential area with excellent surroundings and a full set of neighborhood facilities.

Although it wasn’t as bustling as the city center, the housing prices here could reach over twenty thousand per square meter.

“If the house is in this area, it’s quite valuable. It’s understandable that siblings would fall out over it,” Lin Yi said.

Zhang Peng nodded, looking into the community.

“I heard the smallest houses here are over a hundred square meters, worth at least twenty million yuan. For ordinary people, that’s no small amount.”

“Let’s go find the complainant and see what’s going on.”

The two drove into the community and found the middle-aged woman who had called the police by a townhouse.

She appeared to be in her fifties, wearing a purple-red dress.

She was sitting by a flower bed, wiping her tears.

Next to her was a young man, probably her son, who was pacing angrily and speaking vehemently.

“Talking to them is pointless! Someone like him just needs a good beating to behave.”

The young man was furious, pacing back and forth.

“If you hadn’t stopped me, I would have found someone to beat him to death!”
