Lin Yi was speechless.

‘Is this just because I ignored you back then? Is there a need to brood over it and act cool?’

“That’s not bad,” Lin Yi agreed casually.

“Come to think of it, we haven’t seen each other for many years. I heard from your girlfriend just now that you seem to have become a police officer. Is that true?”

“Yes, it is.”

“Why are you a police officer? It’s so dangerous. It’s better to find a normal job.”

“It’s a personal interest.”

“I have a friend who used to be a police officer. I think his salary is only about 6,000 yuan. What about you? It should be about the same, right?”

Lin Yi nodded. “After 1 become a full-time employee, I’ll be able to get around that much money.”

“I feel that this kind of salary is barely enough to live in a third- or fourth-tier city, but in a city like Zhonghai, it’s definitely not enough to support yourself.” Li Mengyao said.

“Furthermore, your family has no power or influence. It will be quite difficult for you to be promoted in the future. 1 reckon that your budget will be quite tight.”

“Is this considered a tight budget?” Lin Yi said.

“I remember when you were in school, your monthly living expenses were only about 1,000 yuan, and you never complained about being strapped for cash. You lived quite well, so how come my salary of 6,ooo yuan is not enough?”

Li Mengyao looked embarrassed, even somewhat distressed.

She didn’t expect Lin Yi to mention this.

“That was years ago. Inflation wasn’t that bad. Back then, a thousand was enough to finance myself. Now, naturally, it’s not.”

Li Mengyao raised her voice subconsciously as if someone had stepped on her tail. She didn’t want Lin Yi to bring up her past of being poor.

“Besides, everything was cheap in school. It can’t be compared to society. Now, your monthly salary is 6,ooo yuan. To be honest, it’s only equal to my weekly living expenses. Your life with your girl should be quite unsatisfactory, right?”

“You don’t have to worry about it. We’re doing quite well.”

Li Mengyao smiled. “You’re really lucky. Based on your qualifications, it should be quite difficult to find a girlfriend in Zhonghai. Besides, your girlfriend is so beautiful. Work hard. If you can’t earn enough money to buy a house, your future mother-in-law won’t agree to the relationship. Work hard. Bye bye.”

After showing off her superiority, Li Mengyao entered the SK2 store provocatively without even looking at Lin Yi.

“Don’t tell me something is going on between the two of you?” Ji Qingyan asked suspiciously. “Why did she start arguing with you right from the start?”

Initially, Ji Qingyan was furious. With her temper, she would have retaliated long ago.

However, Li Mengyao commented that she was quite pretty, so her anger was immediately cut in half.

Therefore, one shouldn’t guess a woman’s thoughts. No matter how you tried to guess, you wouldn’t understand.

“She wrote me a love letter when I was in school, but I ignored her. She is probably bearing a grudge. I didn’t expect her to still remember it.” Lin Yi said helplessly.

“It probably left an impression on her.”

“Is it really that serious, to remember such a small matter for so long?” Ji Qingyan said, tilting her chin up.

“When I was in school, a lot of boys wrote me love letters, and 1 rejected them all. But in the end, we all got along fine, hmm…”

“That’s because your family is wealthy,” Lin Yi shrugged. “Who would want to make an enemy of someone with money?”

Ji Qingyan rolled her eyes. This seemed to make sense.

Just as they were talking, they heard Li Mengyao’s voice.

“I heard your store recently launched a new men’s black gold set. Has it arrived yet?”

“It just arrived today. You’ve come at the right time; there’s only one set left in the store.”

“Perfect, pack it up for me,” Li Mengyao said.

“My boyfriend is going on a business trip in a few days, and he just happens to need a new set of toiletries.”

With that, Li Mengyao glanced at Lin Yi, who was standing outside, with a sense of superiority.

“Alright, please wait a moment.”

Soon, the shop assistant found the black gold set that Li Mengyao mentioned.

It was about the size of a shoebox and the packaging was exceptionally exquisite. It looked like a work of art.

“Hello, ma’am. It cost a total of 46,800 yuan. Do you want to swipe your card or scan the QR code?”

Just as Li Mengyao was about to scan the QR code, her hand trembled. “What did you say? 46,800?”

“Yes, one set is 46,800.”

“Are you mistaken? I saw it on the Internet. It’s 6,900 yuan a set. Why is it 46,800 yuan here?”

The staff was also a little confused. He tentatively reminded,

“The 6,900 yuan you’re talking about might be the cost for the skincare products inside. It’s just a single product, not the entire set. There are a total of 12 single products in this set, so the price…”

“All…” Li Mengyao laughed awkwardly, “So that’s what happened.”

Although her boyfriend had raised some money, it belonged to the company and other shareholders. He could not spend it himself.

Although his conditions were not bad, a 46,800 yuan set was very extravagant for them.

The staff smiled back, trying to ease the awkwardness.

“Would you like to swipe your card or scan the code?”

“I don’t need the other items, I’m only interested in the toner. Just pack that for me.”

“Isn’t your boyfriend going on a trip? The toiletries in the set should be useful to him, right?”

The salesperson was trying to make a sale, hoping to earn a higher commission by persuading her to buy the whole set.

“Plus, you just said you wanted to buy a set. It’s not cost-effective to buy just the toner.”

“Well…”

Li Mengyao paused for a moment and said, “I made a slip of the tongue just now. I really don’t need a set. I just need one of the single products, so stop promoting it.”

Seeing that Li Mengyao wasn’t willing to buy the whole set, the waiter’s expression changed slightly. “I’m sorry, this is a set. The items inside can’t be sold seperately.”

“Then there’s nothing we can do. What a pity.”

The salesperson didn’t say anything, reluctantly took the items out of the bag, and prepared to put them back.

“Since you’ve already taken it out, don’t put it back. I want it,” said Ji Qingyan.

Huh?

Seeing that Ji Qingyan wanted to buy it, Li Mengyao and the salesperson were stunned.

“You want to buy it?”

Ji Qingyan glanced at Li Mengyao. “What else?”

“Lin Yi’s salary is only around 6000 yuan. If he buys this, he’ll have wasted half a year’s worth of salary. You have to take it easy,” Li Mengyao said sarcastically.

“If you have the money, save it for a house.”

“Ma’am, you can’t afford it. Please don’t disturb the other customers, okay?” The salesperson said unhappily.

“What did you say? Who said I can’t afford it?!” Li Mengyao was furious.

“If you want to buy it, I can sell it to you first,” the salesperson retorted.

“I do want to buy it, but only as long as it’s a single item, I won’t be able to use the rest. If you won’t sell it separately, how can I buy it?”

“Ma’am, looking at your attire, you seem to be a person who’s experienced in life and knowledgeable about cosmetics. When have you ever seen items from a set being sold separately?”

“You!”

“As to what’s really going on, I think we all understand, so I won’t spell it out. But please, don’t interfere with our business.”

Lin Yi smacked his lips. The salesperson really had a way with words.

How eloquent.
