The Daily Life Of A Cyberpunk Magician

Chapter 194 - 155: The Self-Taught Master Su
Chapter 194: Chapter 155: The Self-Taught Master SuWolf’s work ID and security instructions had arrived, and Jiang Shu had another chat with Wolf about what exactly one should pay attention to when appearing on a variety show.

Such a big guy, and now he’s actually getting nervous about being on TV.

Anyway, Wolf didn’t understand, so he might as well bluff his way through it.

Additionally, he got to know a bit about the variety show. Unlike the last one, this time it seemed more serious, essentially a talk show, primarily interviewing and conversing with first-hand witnesses of hot current events.

Overall, it seemed like a normal show, but Jiang Shu wondered in what capacity he was supposed to participate in such a variety show.

As Wolf’s partner? A consultant for Deception at the police station? A rising new star in the police world?

Although there was no deliberate effort to conceal his status as a Crime Consultant, and everyone at the police station knew about it, Charles had still ordered that the matter be spread only on a small scale.

Wolf was quite clever, too; he didn’t tell the variety show’s production team about Jiang Shu’s participation directly but instead secured a spot for a special invited guest.

The choice was still Jiang Shu’s. If he was willing, he could let Sister Mei make the arrangements.

So Jiang Shu agreed. With the case of the fox causing havoc at the police station, this talk show’s ratings were bound not to be low.

Another wave of a great audience ripe for the picking and he could also use it to generate buzz for his magic show comeback next week. He thought Sister Mei wouldn’t pass up such an opportunity.

Just...

A magician from the Entertainment Series and a Police Chief from the Social Sequence appearing on the same talk show, discussing a serious real-life crime issue – it’s somewhat mismatched.

But then, thinking about Lonely City’s obsession with entertainment, Jiang Shu felt it made complete sense after all.

After all, nothing that happened in this bird city would surprise him.

Event: Talk Show Variety

Date: Next Monday

Preparation: A sophisticated and interesting magic trick

Jiang Shu scribbled these notes in his notebook, but as he wrote, he suddenly remembered something and circled the entire line under ”Preparation.”

Would the program allocate time for him to perform a magic trick?

Ask Sister Mei.

Jiang Shu made his way to Sister Mei’s office. Her office door was open, so he knocked and peeked in through the doorway.

”Come in,” Mei, sitting at her desk, said without looking up. As Jiang Shu approached, she put down her stylus, closed her electronic screen, and looked up, ”Jiang Shu, what’s up?”

Through the short month of working together, Sister Mei had realized that Jiang Shu was quite the laissez-faire type. He definitely wouldn’t come to see her unless it was necessary, and he didn’t have many social engagements, at least not with colleagues in the theater who bothered to be familiar with him.

To this, Jiang Shu would have to say, the idlest people often had the most social engagements. This month, if he wasn’t preparing for his Magic act or involved in Deception cases, he was busy being locked up - when would he have time to live a charging-to-the-forefront life?

Of course, having no time was one thing; having no interest was another.

”There’s this talk show variety program I think I could take up,” Jiang Shu got straight to the point, laying out the simple information prepared by Xiao Jia in front of Sister Mei, ”But it will need Sister Mei to liaise with them, I’m not sure...”

He didn’t continue; Sister Mei surely understood what he meant.

”Let me see, ’Bob’s Talk Show,’ eh, this column...” Sister Mei was a bit puzzled, ”They usually only invite people involved in hot current issues, and lately...”

”I’m invited as a special guest, and the main guest for the next issue is still Wolf, Police Chief of the Seventh District Station,” Jiang Shu thought for a moment and added, ”As for me, I’d probably be commenting on current affairs as a third party, which they’ve had in previous episodes.”

”That would work,” Mei nodded. She quickly saw the benefits of participating in this variety show, ”It just so happens that ticket sales for your Magic Performance start next Tuesday. This would be a good opportunity to pump up the momentum, maybe bump up the price by another ten bucks.”

”Uh, the show is on Wednesday, and tickets go on sale just the day before?” Jiang Shu blinked, ”Isn’t that a bit rushed?”

”Not at all, do you think your tickets need to be sold for many days now?” Mei looked at him, puzzled, ”Once we open the ticketing channels, they’ll be sold out within five seconds, and that’s with measures already in place to limit bulk purchases by scalpers.”

”Well... that is true,” Jiang Shu nodded, ”But Sister Mei, as I’ve mentioned before, I’m currently keeping my Magic Performances short. It’s best if they act as intermission acts amongst other performances.”

”Hmm?” Mei’s brow furrowed slightly, ”Most people come specifically for your magic acts, I’d like to bundle and sell the others as bonus products too, but that could upset a lot of the audience.”

”Then let’s lower the price. Right now, I control each performance to last between five and twenty minutes; it’s tough to go longer,” Jiang Shu pursed his lips, ”I have limited energy to spend a long time performing magic, I’m sorry.”

Making such a choice, Jiang Shu couldn’t help it; after all, his energy truly was limited.

If each Magic Performance had to last an hour or even two, it would have to be a series of magic acts strung together, and that’s a complicated matter.

By himself, the connections between the magic tricks and the scripting would take up too much energy.
