Hero of Darkness

Chapter 1228: City of Lights

Morpheus was petrified after seeing that the so-called saviors that Neo just relinquished his future to were no different than the people who captured and enslaved them for pure business and entertainment at the expense of the monster attack survivors’ lives.

Neo had already run off and was put inside the rescue jeeps, while on the other end of Morpheus’ sight... he saw the victims being slaughtered for no reason.

”We don’t need to save everyone anyway. Just fit the quota and kill everyone else since we don’t need more baggage.

The people in those transport vehicles are enough. These runts that can’t even survive another day won’t make a difference.” spoke the team leader of this particular group.

”Ah, team leader. How do we cover this in the reports, then? They look like they were killed by hunters.

There is the mana trace left behind by our skills.” spoke a woman with scholarly attire while holding a magic crystal wand in her hand.

”We do it like we always do. Make it look like the work of those rogue hunters that are already on the wanted criminal list.

Besides, there are plenty of them already fighting in that colosseum as per the intel, so we state that these people were killed by them.

Unfortunately, we were just too late to save them. Ha ha ha!” replied the team leader with a cynical and sinister laugh.

[So this wasn’t the first time? What do these hunters even stand for?

Dad always said hunters are the chosen heroes of the goddess who protect humanity. So why are they acting just like the criminals?] asked Morpheus to himself.

”Let’s go quickly!”

Shouted a man, a guest for today to be precise, as his people started running towards a car in the parking lot to get out.

Morpheus saw this group of rich people, surrounded by their bodyguards, in this parking lot, and trying to leave through the breached wall via a car.

He quickly noticed that the back side of the car was open after some debris fell on the trunk due to an explosion.

[What do I even do? Should I stay like Neo or just go my own way?

Those hunters aren’t even sparing the adults, much less a child like me.] he contemplated with a serious expression.

[No, I need to take a risk and get out of here first.] he thought and firmed his resolve.

Morpheus was already scared after watching that massacre by the hunter and decided to follow these people, the ones who came to spend their time watching kids and adults like Morpheus kill each other.

Despite the clash of ideals, he quickly sprinted behind the car and got inside the open back end. He quickly hid himself and shut his mouth.

Vroom!

Vroom!

Soon, the car started, and through the breached wall, the entourage left during all this chaos.

In the trunk, Morpheus saw a wave of guests and their security trying to leave just like them, but were suddenly attacked by the hunters with a volley of skills and destructive long-range attacks.

[If I didn’t run... I would be standing right then among those people.] thought Morpheus as he heaved a sigh of relief.

But the problem wasn’t solved just yet.

Because the means of transport he was using just now also belonged to one of those sick bastards who delighted in the carnage and flesh of innocent people.

If he did not time his escape well... he might as well get caught and end up dead again, just like what he experienced in the past month.

The car made its escape after hours of following unknown routes and hidden valleys for hours and finally, at midnight, they entered a city entrance.

The people had their identities verified and slowly entered the closed gates that separated the slums from the rich population of the society.

Without their identities, Morpheus would probably never even pass the city gates.

From the small gap, he quietly observed the glimmering lights and bustling crowd of the city that was filled with towering buildings and neon lights as if there was a festival.

For Morpheus, who saw a major city’s inner structure for the first time in his life, this place was reminiscent of the hell he had just escaped.

[I need to look for an opportunity when there aren’t many people.] He thought and quietly observed.

Another hour passed, and finally, the car started entering shallow roads and quieter parts of the city where only large properties, filled with houses as big as a castle, remained.

This was a secluded part of the city where only the elites of society resided. Thus, there wasn’t a large crowd with a keen set of eyes.

This became a good opportunity for Morpheus, and as soon as a dark corner came into his side, he slowly raised the trunk and quickly jumped out.

Thud!

The open trunk banged as the speeding car alerted the people.

But because they were all already terrified from the recent attack, they did not care to look back and drifted their own way.

After the car passed another corner and disappeared into the night, Morpheus emerged from the dark shadows as he looked towards the road where the car had gone off.

After confirming that there wasn’t anyone looking for him, he slowly started walking towards a small hill in this area to get a better view of his whereabouts.

10 Minutes Later...

Morpheus reached the top of the hill and saw that there were many tall houses and bungalows in this area, located on a mountain. All of them were shining with their own lights and had several security personnel stationed for the safety of the owners.

And far away was the bustling city filled with blinding lights and sky-touching buildings.

To someone like Morpheus, who only spent his years so far in the slums and in the cages, this opened a new world to his mind.

This was a completely unknown and different city he had previously lived close to. But one thing Morpheus understood very well.

”Mom, Dad... I will not waste the life you gave me.

One day...” spoke Morpheus, his tiny body basking in the moonlight.

This was the place where his real journey towards the path of survival would start.

He raised his palm, and it covered the sight of the grand city. Morpheus spoke with an indomitable resolve as he swore to himself...

”I will rule this city.”
