97: Chapter 97 Beast Horde AttackBefore this squadron, the ground was a pool of scarlet blood, littered with tattered camouflage uniforms and scattered remains.

”These belong to the reconnaissance squad...”

A soldier’s face turned deathly pale, and the surrounding soldiers wore the same expression.

They were elite soldiers from the field army who had experienced the deaths of war, but they had never seen such a cruel scene.

The squadron leader’s face was filled with fury!

”Damn it! I knew those beasts weren’t that simple!”

”Communications soldier, hurry and report the situation here to General Zhao. Tell the other squadrons to be careful; those beasts are even stronger than in other places!”

”Yes!”

To be able to wipe out an experienced reconnaissance squad before they could even fire a shot—how terrifying must the beasts that attacked them be?

”You few, go clean up these remains... We cannot let our comrades’ bodies be exposed in the wilderness...”

”Yes, Squadron Leader...”

Boom!!!

Just as this squadron was filled with anger, fear, and a trace of unease, a violent explosion suddenly rang out from afar!

”That’s the sound of howitzers and grenades exploding!”

In an instant, every soldier in the experienced squadron analyzed where the commotion was coming from.

The squadron leader thought for a few seconds, then glanced at the dense forest made up of towering trees.

”Let’s go! We’re going to provide reinforcements!”

”Ah!”

Suddenly, a cry of pain rang out from nearby. Everyone looked in horror to see a Big Brown Bear, its body a size larger than a truck, running toward the distant forest with two people in its mouth.

Following him were swarms of man-eating beasts: jackals, wolves, tigers, and leopards, as well as wild boars, water buffaloes, and herds of deer...

These enormous animals all rushed toward the squadron!

”Quick, engage!”

...

That explosion seemed to ignite the silent forest; the previously quiet forest was now filled with the booming sounds of explosions and the constant roar of gunfire.

These events happened in rapid succession, with intervals of no more than a few minutes, causing General Zhao in the command post to be stunned for a moment.

He looked at the pale-faced communications soldier in front of him.

”Are you sure? All five squadrons have been attacked by beasts?!”

The pale-faced communications soldier nodded vigorously.

He hurriedly said.

”According to the reports from the squadron communications soldiers, massive herds of beasts—both carnivores and herbivores—have attacked our troops together...”

General Zhao stared at the communications soldier with wide, tiger-like eyes. ”How is this possible...”

Carnivores and herbivores could never act together; this was the law of nature.

Yet this phenomenon had actually defied it?!

This group of natural enemies had actually united to actively attack their Great Xia troops?!

What kind of joke is this?!

”And...”

General Zhao glared at the hesitant communications soldier and shouted.

”We are all soldiers! Don’t act like a woman, being wishy-washy! Just say what you have to say!”

The communications soldier immediately replied loudly!

”Reporting to General Zhao! Furthermore, the bodies of these beasts are incredibly massive, far exceeding the size of animals in the suburbs of other cities recorded in the Great Xia Military Department’s files!”

”In fact... many of them are very fast beasts that can dodge howitzer attacks; bullets cannot harm them at all!”

After hearing this, General Zhao was stunned for a moment, but quickly snapped back to reality.

”Order all squadrons to open fire at will and enter the depths of the forest at all costs, aiming to reach Divine Phoenix Mountain as soon as possible!”

”Also! Have the medical squads escorted into the forest to try and save more soldiers!”

The communications soldier was dumbfounded, seemingly not understanding General Zhao’s words.

”General, nearly fifty soldiers have already died, and a hundred are injured. Shouldn’t we retreat and reformulate our battle plan...”

”I am the General! Follow my orders and fulfill your duty as a communications soldier!”

”Go pass on the order; I don’t want to say it a second time!”

”Yes...”

After the communications soldier left the command room, only General Zhao remained.

”Hoo...”

General Zhao’s burly, tiger-like frame seemed to fall apart as he sat powerlessly on his chair.

His usually sharp, aggressive tiger-like eyes rarely appeared vacant, and there was even a trace of fear!

As a general who had guarded the frontiers for years and fought in countless battles, he naturally knew that with the five squadrons currently under attack by these bizarre beasts and suffering heavy casualties, the best course of action would be to retreat, rescue the wounded, and minimize the troops’ losses.

But for some reason, the strong soldier’s intuition he had honed on the battlefield for years was telling him that if he withdrew the troops today, he would definitely regret it later!

And it wasn’t just regret... there seemed to be a fear coming from the depths of his soul.

This inexplicable sense of unease made him terrified; even when he had faced death closest on the battlefield, he had never had this feeling.

”The many beasts outside the suburbs of Jianghai City previously retreated...”

”No... not retreated! They retreated together into the forest and united to attack the Great Xia troops...”

”If it were just an attack, they wouldn’t need to fight head-on like this; it’s almost like they are protecting something...”

Gradually, the clues in General Zhao’s mind became clearer. He felt he was about to understand the purpose behind the behavior of these strange beast herds, but it always felt like it was separated by a thick layer of fog...

...

The five squadrons in the forest that received General Zhao’s order were all somewhat confused by it.

The troops were suffering heavy casualties; why continue fighting that group of powerful beasts?

But military orders are like mountains; they had no choice but to grit their teeth, hold their guns, and continue fighting.

Fortunately, this military order allowed them to use the various heavy weapons prepared for the White-Feathered Giant Eagle.

For a time, across dozens of miles of the forest floor, there was a constant booming sound, as if an earth dragon were roaring and churning beneath the ground, causing the earth to shake...

...

In the sky, on the helicopter that Reporter Wang Xiaoli was riding in, they also noticed the massive commotion.

However, the helicopter was more than two thousand meters above the ground, making it impossible for them to see exactly what was happening below...

Listening to the booming, thunderous sounds from the forest floor, they only knew that for some reason, the Great Xia troops on the ground had suddenly fallen into a bitter battle.

Reporter Wang Xiaoli suddenly felt a chill all over. She wrapped her clothes tighter around herself, but the cold sensation became increasingly biting, as if the cold were seeping out from her bone marrow.

She shuddered!

”This feeling... it’s a warning of danger from the beasts!”

The familiar feeling once again enveloped her entire body. Reporter Wang Xiaoli did not hesitate; she was certain that this sixth sense was warning of a crisis again.

She immediately turned around and told the helicopter pilot to fly back to Jianghai City!

But suddenly, her phone rang...
