Gene Unlocking: I Evolve Every Day

Chapter 158: Chapter 147: Token of Affection

In the bedroom.

Lu Li gently embraced Liu Kexin.

In theory, he wasn’t exerting any force.

If she really didn’t want to be held, she could break free anytime.

In fact, Liu Kexin didn’t do that.

Lu Li knew why.

To men, women are a strange species.

For example, if a woman dislikes someone, even a touch or a glance from that person can annoy her, possibly leading her to act out or distance herself.

On the contrary, if a girl likes you, she might pretend to resist your advances, but she won’t actually be annoyed and might even try to get closer.

That’s the situation between Liu Kexin and himself at the moment.

If Liu Kexin truly had no interest in him, she wouldn’t have knocked on the door today, let alone come in when invited.

Besides, when he used to live here, perhaps because of work reasons, she needed to ensure his safety.

But even after he’s resigned for so long, she still lets him live here, which clearly means she likes him.

Yes, even if Lu Li hadn’t used the Mind Reading Technique to see Liu Kexin’s thoughts, he could have figured out from the circumstances that she was interested in him.

Knowing someone has feelings for you is one thing.

Whether you can break through that barrier is another.

Today, Lu Li wanted to see if he could persuade her to open her heart so they could establish a relationship.

Thinking about this, he pressed his forehead against hers and softly asked, ”Not seeing me these days, have you missed me?”

Liu Kexin, always stubborn, blatantly denied, ”Why would I miss you? Hey, loosen your grip first, let’s sit down and talk.”

Seeing her serious expression, Lu Li guessed she indeed had something to discuss.

Although he sometimes playfully teased her, he wouldn’t muddle serious talks.

He released her, pointed to the edge of the bed, ”Sit down. What do you want to talk about?”

Liu Kexin casually placed her bag on the bedside table and then sat down, ”I want to thank you.”

Lu Li sat beside her, turned his head, ”Thank me for what?”

If in the past, Liu Kexin would have asked why Lu Li sat so close.

But this time, she didn’t ask. Instead, even though they were close, she turned her head to look, and sincerely said, ”You went all the way to Myanmar to rescue Man Ni.”

They were so close that Lu Li could even feel the fragrance in her breath as she spoke.

Lu Li gazed seriously into her eyes and said, ”I went to rescue Chen Man Ni partly because of you, but also for another reason, because I owed a favor before, so you really don’t need to feel burdened about it.”

”How could I not care?” Liu Kexin’s tone softened, unlike her usual firmness, ”No matter what, I must thank you for this.”

Lu Li playfully teased her, ”How do you plan to thank me?”

He initially intended to keep the conversation light, and then see if he could get closer to Liu Kexin.

Unexpectedly, Liu Kexin reached for her bag, ”You’ll know soon enough.”

Lu Li wasn’t using his clairvoyant ability at the moment.

Naturally, he couldn’t see through her bag.

Curiously, he asked, ”Did you buy me something?”

Liu Kexin unzipped the bag and took out a small gift box, ”Yeah, just something small. I don’t know if you’ll like it.”

She handed the small gift box over.

Lu Li reached for it but didn’t immediately open it, ”What’s inside?”

Liu Kexin smiled slightly, ”You can open it yourself to find out.”

Lu Li then tore off the delicate wrapping and opened the box, finding a platinum ring set with an emerald lying quietly inside.

Liu Kexin eagerly urged from the side, ”Try it on and see how it looks.”

Lu Li picked up the ring and asked her, ”This ring must’ve cost you quite a bit, right?”

”Not much.” Liu Kexin didn’t want to discuss the price, only urging him to put it on, ”Wear it and see if it looks good.”

Lu Li earnestly asked, ”You need to tell me how much it cost, and be honest.”

Liu Kexin helplessly held up two fingers.

Lu Li exclaimed, ”You spent two hundred thousand just for this ring?”

Liu Kexin’s eyes flickered, ”Yes, it cost two hundred thousand.”

From her evasive answer, Lu Li quickly realized she was lying and asked again, ”How much did it really cost?”

Liu Kexin still gestured with two fingers, ”It’s really that much.”

Lu Li began to suspect, ”Could it be two million?”

Liu Kexin fell silent.

Lu Li sighed, ”Spending two million on a ring? That’s really wasteful.”

Liu Kexin didn’t answer his question, ”Put it on and see.”

”Later.” Lu Li pondered for a moment, ”I have something for you too.”

Now it was Liu Kexin’s turn to be curious, ”Why suddenly think of giving me a gift?”

Lu Li said, ”You can give me things, why can’t I give you something?”

Saying this, he turned over and reached for the diamond beside the pillow, crafted with his upgraded micro-vision ability.

Although this diamond was ”created” with his superpower, it was indistinguishable from a natural diamond, quite presentable indeed.

Liu Kexin hadn’t seen the item yet and said, ”I gave you something to thank you for saving Man Ni. I was originally going to hire mercenaries from the Ugly Country, but then Man Ni called and said you saved them, so I didn’t hire any, saving money to buy you a gift.”

”Even if you hired mercenaries, it was to save Chen Man Ni. She should pay you back, not you out of your own pocket,” said Lu Li, grasping the diamond. ”Besides, I saved her, not you. If thanks are in order, it should come from her... Hmm, see if you like it?”

He extended his palm in front of her.

”It’s because of me that you...” Liu Kexin had only said half when she suddenly saw a huge diamond lying quietly in Lu Li’s palm, and she turned her head in amazement, ”Such a big diamond?”

Looking at her, Lu Li said, ”Do you like it? If not, I can get you a bigger one next time.”

”No! No, no, no!” Liu Kexin quickly shook her hand and said, ”Large diamonds are usually expensive, don’t waste your money. By my estimation, this is about ten carats, with excellent cut, pure quality, it must have cost two to three million, right?”

Lu Li truthfully said, ”Didn’t cost anything.”

Liu Kexin didn’t believe it, ”How is that possible, unless it fell from the sky?”

Lu Li blinked and said, ”A gift from someone else, do you believe it?”

This wasn’t entirely a lie after all; it was indeed a gift from nature, given that the carbon atoms were gathered from the air.

Liu Kexin still hesitated to accept it, ”No way, it’s too valuable, I can’t take such an expensive gift without merit.”

Lu Li pretended to act sulky, ”Then I won’t want your ring either.”

Liu Kexin: ”...”

Lu Li pointed at the diamond in his palm with another hand, ”Either you take the diamond, and I take the ring, or if you don’t take it, neither will I.”

Liu Kexin softly explained, ”I gave you the ring to thank you for saving someone. You’re giving me a diamond, I didn’t achieve anything, what reason do I have to accept it?”

Lu Li gazed into her eyes and suddenly uttered, ”You can take it as a token of love.”

Liu Kexin blushed instantly and retorted, ”Pah, you wish, who is getting engaged to you?”

Lu Li reached out to touch her face, ”You, who else could it be?”

Liu Kexin slightly dodged, ”Lu Li, don’t do this, we agreed last time to let me think it over. Please wait until I figure it out, and then I’ll give you an answer, okay?”

Lu Li didn’t give her space to dodge. He didn’t speak, merely hooked her chin with his finger.

Liu Kexin was ”forced” to gaze into Lu Li’s eyes.

At first, her composure held firm.

But gradually, it seemed as if she smelled an intoxicating fragrance.

Liu Kexin’s gaze turned misty, and she subconsciously murmured, ”You... smell... great.”

Lu Li slowly leaned closer and softly asked, ”Do you like it?”

Seeing him approach, Liu Kexin’s breath quickened, she opened her mouth to speak, ”Li... no... don’t like...”

It was clear that although she was somewhat entranced by the pheromones inadvertently emitted by Lu Li, her inner rationality still insisted on ”not admitting.”

Lu Li continued to lean closer.

The next moment, his forehead rested on her smooth one.

The two were nearly pressed together.

Liu Kexin could even feel Lu Li almost touching her lips.

Clearly, Lu Li wasn’t doing anything to ”restrain” her.

Yet that intoxicating fragrance made Liu Kexin unable to extricate herself, her rationality gradually crumbling.

Lu Li deliberately kept their lips a few millimeters apart.

As if just a slight move forward, they would kiss.

However, he didn’t actually press his lips to hers.

Lu Li softly asked again, ”Do you like it or not?”

This kind of close contact, yet without actual contact, was highly intimate and ambiguous in itself.

In this moment, Liu Kexin’s breath became rapid and heavy.

Her hands involuntarily rested on either side of Lu Li’s waist.

Lu Li could feel her movements.

He knew she was deeply drawn in by his pheromones.

But it seemed something in her heart was holding her back from completely releasing.

He deliberately wrapped his arm around her waist, exerting a slight force to pull her fully against him.

Lu Li asked again, ”Tell me, do you like me?”

This slightly domineering move.

Plus, being pressed even closer together.

Made Liu Kexin completely lose herself.

Almost without thinking, she embraced Lu Li and then closed her eyes, initiating a kiss for the first time.

Lu Li only felt a softness on his lips and saw Liu Kexin kissing him.

At the same time, Liu Kexin’s muffled voice came through, ”I... really do.”
