The Fantastic Little Farmer

Chapter 63: Chapter 63: Can You Do Whatever You Want Just Because You Have a Little Money?

Zhang Yun’s slight effort made Dong Junwu extremely happy and Gu Ming’er very excited.

”You are all important people and must be very busy. I won’t keep you for lunch,” Zhang Yun said with a smile, raising his teacup to see his guests off.

Gu Ming’er was anxious. She had just poured the tea, which only counted as having tea with a big shot. If they stayed for lunch, it would mean she had eaten with a big shot. She leaned in, secretly tugged on Zhang Yun’s arm, and whispered, ”Why don’t you keep the guests for lunch? I’ll go cook right away!”

Seeing her little gestures and hearing her words, Dong Junwu concluded that even if she wasn’t the lady of the house yet, she certainly didn’t sound like an outsider. This was absolute proof—she was definitely Zhang Yun’s girlfriend! This unexpected harvest from the trip would put his boss at ease.

Dong Junwu chuckled. ”Miss Gu, you should just cook for Mr. Zhang. We really don’t have the time today. We’ll definitely take you up on the offer next time!”

Zhang Lifeng hurriedly added, ”I will host Mr. Dong. There’s no need to see us out. Hurry up and put this money away.” The old man wasn’t overwhelmed by the cash, but he was shrewd. There were so many onlookers outside, both adults and children. Let alone someone swiping a whole bundle, even if a few bills went missing, it wouldn’t be good if Zhang Yun suspected Dong Junwu hadn’t paid in full.

Zhang Yun didn’t stand on ceremony with them. ”Then I’ll leave it to you, Dean Zhang. Oh, right! What about the thing I asked you to handle?”

Zhang Lifeng was momentarily speechless. You forgot about a million-yuan ginseng transaction, but you couldn’t forget the Maotai? ”I came in a hurry just now. I’ll bring it to you later!”

As they headed for the door, Zhang Yun sat still, looking completely relaxed. Gu Ming’er had no time to worry about his lack of manners. As a newcomer in the legal field, it was rare for her to interact with big shots. Let alone trying to curry favor to leave a good impression, purely from a junior’s perspective, it was only natural for her to respectfully escort them to the door.

Dong Junwu had already formed his preconceptions. Seeing her actions, he naturally assumed she was seeing off the guests on behalf of the aloof Zhang Yun.

”Zhang Yun, where did you dig up that ginseng? How can there be such a huge ginseng?”

”Where did you find such a wealthy boss? You actually sold it for a million?”

”You’ve struck it rich! You can totally afford to get a wife now!”

”Was that pretty girl just now your girlfriend? If not, let me introduce you to some girls right away!”

As soon as the outsiders left, the onlookers crowding the doorway swarmed in. Some couldn’t resist taking out their phones to snap photos. Cash was becoming increasingly rare these days, and a million in hard cash was an even rarer sight.

Zhang Yun casually humored them and invited everyone to have some tea.

Whether they were drooling with envy or feeling sour in their hearts, the villagers still possessed basic sense and manners. With a million lying in stacks on the table, if any of it went missing, anyone staying for tea would be a suspect.

”I’m heading back to cook. Let’s have tea another day.”

”Put your money away safely.”

”Hurry and deposit it in the bank! Seriously, that boss should have just wired it directly to your card!”

As the crowd dispersed, Gu Ming’er returned from seeing the guests off. Seeing the suitcase of money still sitting on the table, she couldn’t help but complain, ”Put it away! Everyone already knows you made a million. How long are you going to show it off? Be careful, or someone will come knocking to borrow money in a minute!”

Zhang Yun chuckled. ”Is this showing off? This is me being nonchalant. I treat money like dirt!”

”You ill-mannered guy. You just made so much money—would hosting a lunch bankrupt you?” Gu Ming’er was still a bit indignant. What a golden opportunity that was! If they had stayed for a meal, she could have at least left a deeper impression on the big shot. Who knows, he might have recruited her to work for him someday.

”Do you feel like I made you miss out on a great opportunity?” Zhang Yun asked with a smile.

Being called out so directly made Gu Ming’er a little embarrassed. ”Not really... You were the one who helped me get Lawyer Dong’s WeChat. I just thought... it’s basic etiquette, you know?”

”You didn’t throw a temper tantrum when pouring the tea just now. Good job. As a reward, I’ll give you some spit to drink!”

Gu Ming’er rolled her eyes. She couldn’t stand the word ”spit” right now—he had to clearly say ”a mouthful of water”!

”Grab a cup yourself. Your big brother will chat with you in detail,” Zhang Yun said, pointing at the table.

Gu Ming’er wanted to refuse, but she was curious to hear what he had to say. She ended up grabbing a cup, pouring herself some tea, and then refilling Zhang Yun’s.

”Speak!”

”Opportunities are given, but it’s up to you to grasp them. Cause and effect are linked. Didn’t I invite you to stay for lunch? I asked you to cook, but you weren’t willing.”

Gu Ming’er’s eyes widened. She realized Zhang Yun had known Dong Junwu was coming and had roughly known the time. That had genuinely been an intentional setup!

Zhang Yun smiled. ”Even though you refused, I’m a good guy, so I gave you a second chance. If you had felt that pouring tea was too humiliating, you wouldn’t have had the chance to meet Dong Junwu.”

Gu Ming’er pondered this and realized it seemed true. Her attitude had been poor when she first arrived, so he had put her in her place, forcing her to swallow her pride. But once she became obedient, he helped her network and get the WeChat contact...

”So, you’re the type who responds to reason but not force?” Gu Ming’er re-evaluated Zhang Yun, feeling that he wasn’t as unreasonable as she had thought.

Zhang Yun laughed. ”I don’t respond to either.”

Gu Ming’er felt there was more to his words, but she couldn’t quite put her finger on it, so she didn’t dig deeper. ”Do you know some important figures? Why would a big shot like Dong Junwu come to your door personally to deliver money so politely?”

”What kind of question is that? Can’t I be a big shot myself?” Zhang Yun grabbed a bundle of cash with a smile and tossed it up and down in his hand.

Gu Ming’er’s heart trembled along with it. Was he going to reward her with a whole bundle? That was a hundred thousand! Earlier, he had been throwing money around at five or ten times the going rate. He really didn’t treat money like money.

”Let me state this first! Even if you give me a hundred thousand, I won’t do anything else!”

Seeing her righteous declaration, Zhang Yun couldn’t help but ask curiously, ”What do you mean?”

”I can let you insult my profession, my dignity, and even my soul with money. But I will never let you insult my body with money!” Gu Ming’er felt it was necessary to lay her cards on the table.

”HAHAHA...” Zhang Yun burst into uproarious laughter.

Gu Ming’er snapped, ”Is it funny? I might bow for money to make a living, but I have principles. Don’t think you can do whatever you want just because you have some filthy money!”

”I’m sorry, I couldn’t hold it in...” Zhang Yun trembled with laughter. ”It’s just... Little Ming’er, when you first arrived, you looked every bit the elite lawyer, but right now... HAHAHA!”

”Zhang Yun!” Gu Ming’er shouted angrily, then took a deep breath to keep herself calm and maintain her composure.

”HAHAHAHA... It’s a misunderstanding! Of course, I respect your principles. I just didn’t expect... haha, someone to actually tell me not to think I can do whatever I want just because I have some filthy money. TSK, TSK! Being a rich, arrogant playboy was my dream once!”

Gu Ming’er told herself to calm down. This guy was just a weirdo! Her change of heart about him earlier had been the real misunderstanding!

Zhang Yun placed the bundle of cash back into the suitcase. ”I was just testing what two point five pounds—a hundred thousand yuan—actually felt like in my hand. Why would you mistakenly think I was going to give it to you?”

Gu Ming’er instantly flushed red, the heat burning all the way to the tips of her ears! She had been careless! She should have waited for this guy to say it out loud before sternly refusing him! Now, she was going to be humiliated by him all over again!
