”Or let’s say the groom’s side pays the bride price. The house is also provided by the groom’s family, and in the end, they want to add the bride’s name to the property deed.”

”I just want to ask, on what basis?”

Granny Wang’s question, ”on what basis,” was full of sadness, as if someone was questioning the souls of everyone present, resonating powerfully.

”Is your family’s daughter a treasure and the son from the groom’s family not a treasure?”

”Why should their family’s child unconditionally be good to yours and spend money on your child without conditions?”

”Or, why should they pour years of savings into this, only to inexplicably give away half at the end, on what basis!”

The old woman’s face utterly changed, she turned sharply, wanting to say something, but Granny Wang did not give her the chance, passionately continuing.

”The proper way for us to fight for the rights of the bride’s side is to detach from just the bride’s role, and fight for rights centered on being a person.”

”Don’t fight for women’s rights, fight for human rights!”

”Every citizen has the right to education, women must also receive education, every citizen has the opportunity to work, women must also work outside.”

”When women and men are bearing the same work, we should strive for equal pay for equal work, not excessively pursue the differences between women and men—what, is one a person and the other not?”

”If we want to enjoy the same duties and rights, we must bear the same responsibilities!”

”The few young women who came to the stage, you say the bride should be economically independent, economically free, but in reality, you still advocate that men should bear the main financial responsibility of the household, men supporting the family is taken for granted—darling, this is not fighting for your rights, but supporting men’s rights.”

”Men taking on the primary financial responsibility of the household is weakening the economic status of women, firmly supporting men’s rights.”

With that, Granny Wang looked at the somewhat dumbfounded mature woman beside her, and said:

”Darling, I think you should have a deeper understanding of ourselves.”

”No, it’s that in Europe and America...”

The mature woman, like a drowning person grasping at straws, desperately called for help.

Granny Wang listened but couldn’t help but want to laugh.

”I know, among us, many people envy Europe and America, envy how women there can obtain the same rights as men, yet there’s a fundamental reason for this:

During World War I, a large number of men were requisitioned to the frontlines, and in order to ensure ample ammunition, they had no choice but to recruit women into factories to participate in social labor.”

”Darling, do you know, like in Germany, five million women became part of the workforce, the proportion of female workers in the total workforce increased from thirty-five percent to fifty-five percent.”

”And many other countries that you can name experienced similar phenomena.”

Then, Granny Wang completely stopped looking at her, understanding that her perspective was no longer important, as these young women would not accept her viewpoint.

But Granny Wang still voiced the thoughts of many, they might have faltered, but perhaps the next generation could hear this voice.

”In modern society, all rights are linked with obligations, you want to suppress men in all regards, yet still wish for him to wholeheartedly obey you, darlings, do you think this is realistic?”

”Still the same phrase, the relations of production determine the relations between people, beyond that, there is no other way!”
