Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child

He turned away as one of the cornered mages twenty yards back hurled a roaring sphere of flame across the center ring.

Kōya cut left on the ball of his foot; the fireball missed his shoulder by a foot and slammed squarely into the breastplate of a charging mercenary behind him. Superheated steel flared red as the man went down screaming in the dirt.

Across the pit, the second mage planted his bronze-shod staff in the sand, drawing a wide circle of volatile runes to sweep the whole quadrant.

Kōya sprinted straight down the chord of the circle.

The mage’s eyes went wide behind his hood as the dark coat ate up thirty feet of sand in two breaths. ”Wait—”

Kōya reached him before the incantation hit the halfway mark. One sharp upward flick of the Hero Sword’s spine sent the heavy staff spinning into the lower benches; a short pommel strike to the collarbone dropped the mage unconscious onto his knees.

Stepping past the slumped robe, Kōya reset his stance in the smoke and scanned the circle.

Across the eighty-yard pit, alliances formed with a nod and ended three seconds later in blood. Two plated mercenaries converged on the scarred beastfolk giant from opposite flanks; the giant crushed one man’s visor with a backhand sweep while taking the second man’s blade four inches deep into his ribs. With a roar that rattled the iron gates, the beastman wrenched the iron out of his side as a stray spear punched through the second mercenary’s spine from behind.

Near the eastern grate, a bloodied swordsman dropped his weapon and clawed his way five feet up the stone mortar joints until two brawlers dragged him back down by his boots.

Up in the balconies, gold coins changed hands by the fistful over the shouting.

Kōya glided between the knots of fighting men without swinging at every shadow that crossed his path. Instead, he watched the survivors’ boots and breathing: tracking who was nursing torn ribs, who was faking a limp to bait a careless lunge, and which veterans were saving their wind for the end of the glass. The syndicates weren’t just testing muscle; they were grading survival arithmetic.

A broad-shouldered fighter swinging a heavy two-handed broadsword broke out of the smoke and charged straight at Kōya’s chest with a roar.

Kōya stepped six inches off the line, letting the downward cleave bury itself in empty sand. Wrenching the heavy steel out of the grit, the man spun on his heel and swung horizontally at Kōya’s ribs.

Kōya took the blow on the strong of his blade. Heavy kinetic force drove his boot soles four inches back through the sand.

Heavy arms. Overcommitted heels.

Every time the man swung, his back boot lifted clean off the floor to throw his weight behind the iron. Kōya held his ground, inviting a third strike.

When the broadsword came whistling down from overhead, Kōya slipped left at the last fractional beat. Robbed of a target, the man pitched forward over his toes. Kōya rapped the flat of his blade against the back of the man’s right elbow, kicked the outside hinge of his supporting knee, and tapped the side of his neck with the pommel as he fell.

As the big man hit the sand, steel hissed toward Kōya’s temple from the right flank.

Kōya pivoted and brought the Hero Sword up to meet the cut in a shower of orange sparks.

Behind the opposing crossguard grinned a scarred arena veteran with grey stubble along his jaw. ”The newcomer from yesterday’s card.”

Kōya held the bind steady. ”Apparently.”

”Word in the taproom says you cleared five straight bouts in Pit Three.”

”People talk too much.”

”They’re laying heavy gold on your head tonight, too.”

The veteran leaned his shoulder weight into the crossed blades, sliding Kōya’s boots half a foot across the blood-darkened grit.

Kōya shifted his thumb around the leather grip, rolled his wrists inward to dump the veteran’s edge down into the sand, and drove his right elbow square into the center of the man’s breastplate. As the veteran’s breath burst out in a grunt, Kōya planted a front kick in his stomach that launched him twelve feet backward into the humming amber barrier wall.

Drawing an even breath through his nose, Kōya checked his pulse. Both internal seals sat tight—zero Heroic Power, zero Demonic Mana. Pure footwork and cold steel were plenty for the preliminary cull.

Then a sharp crack of wood and a shouted curse drew his eyes to the western wall.

Twenty yards away, the young contracted slave was backed flat against the stones by a massive brawler swinging a notched cleaver. Deep cuts bled down the boy’s forearms, and his cheap sword was chipped to the fuller.

Every time the boy tried to circle away along the wall to catch his breath, his handler behind the barrier slammed his rod against the iron bars.

”Step in and swing!” the handler bellowed.

The boy flinched as the crimson brand on his wrist flared hot.

”Back up one more inch and you know what waits for you in the cellar tonight!”

The boy’s pale face twisted. The cleaver in front of him was a quick death; the handler’s cellar after the bell was not. When the massive brawler brought his heavy iron down a second time, the boy’s numb fingers failed; the chipped sword flew out of his grip as he crashed onto his side in the sand and threw both arms over his bruised face.

Raising the notched cleaver in both hands to finish him, the brawler stepped onto the boy’s shin.

Kōya crossed the twenty yards in two bounds and caught the descending cleaver dead on the Hero Sword’s edge six inches above the boy’s skull.

The brawler blinked down across the locked steel. ”What the hell are you doing, kid?”

”Ending this bout,” Kōya said, and flicked the heavy cleaver aside.

Snarling, the big man whipped his weapon back in a furious three-strike flurry aimed at Kōya’s head and ribs. The brawler had forty pounds of muscle on him; Kōya moved at twice the man’s speed.

High slash toward the shoulder—parried. Sweeping cut to the floating ribs—slipped by an inch. Lunging thrust—redirected into the masonry wall.

Kōya glided inside the brawler’s wide recovery and stopped the razor point of the Hero Sword one inch from the man’s carotid artery.

The brawler went rigid, sweat dripping from his chin onto the steel.

Kōya lowered his point half an inch. ”Walk away.”

The man looked into Kōya’s flat dark eyes, swallowed hard, and backed away into the center smoke with his hands down.

Kōya turned and looked down at the contracted fighter curled against the base of the wall. ”Get up.”

Lowering his bleeding forearms from his face, the boy stared up at him in bewilderment. ”You...”

”Stand up.”

Bracing one hand against the dressed limestone, the boy pushed himself onto his shaking legs.

Instantly, the dark rune-mark around his bruised right wrist blazed bright scarlet.

”Kill him!” the handler roared from behind the barrier. ”Swing, damn you!”

A jolt of compulsion pain arched the boy’s spine. With a choked cry, he lunged forward on buckling knees and threw a wild, bare-knuckled punch at Kōya’s chest.

Kōya caught the boy’s fist softly on his open left palm.

Driven by the burning ink eating into his wrist tendons, the boy wrenched his arm back and swung again. Left hand. Right hand. Left hand—desperate, exhausted blows with zero weight behind them. Kōya deflected each strike gently with his palm, giving ground half a step at a time so the boy wouldn’t break his own fingers.

”Please...” The boy’s voice cracked down the middle as tears cut clean tracks through the sand on his cheeks.

Kōya lowered his voice. ”Stop swinging.”

”The mark won’t let my arms stop.”

”I know.”

As the boy stumbled forward on another forced swing, Kōya caught him firmly by the thin wrist, feeling the violent tremor running up the boy’s radius.

”If I yield the bout,” the boy whispered in terror, ”he’ll skin me in the pens.”

”I know how the contracts work,” Kōya murmured, pitching his voice below the din so only the boy could hear. ”So I won’t let the judges mark it as a yield.”

The boy stared at him through wet lashes.

Hooking his right instep smoothly behind the boy’s ankle, Kōya swept his legs out from under him while catching the back of his torn shirt collar with his left hand—easing him down so the back of his head touched the stone without a jar. Planting one boot lightly on the boy’s chest, Kōya leveled the Hero Sword at his chin and straightened his spine.

Across the western bleachers, the shouting died into a baffled hush.

Kōya raised his voice to the judge’s platform. ”This fighter is pinned and disarmed. Call the elimination.”

Up on the rostrum, the announcer hesitated with his flag half-raised.

Behind the barrier grate, the handler’s face turned dark purple. ”His eyes are open! He can still move his arms! Keep the bout live!”

Kōya turned his head slowly toward the barrier. ”No.”

The handler slammed his fist against the iron bars. ”You don’t make the house calls down here, brat!”

Kōya looked straight through the bars into the handler’s eyes, letting a sliver of cold pressure leak into his stare. ”I make the call while his throat is under my steel.”

A low murmur rippled along the lower benches. Up on the rostrum, the announcer glanced toward the syndicate officials in the second tier, caught a sharp nod from a clerk, and dropped the white flag.

Two pit-guards stepped out through the medical wicket and lifted the uninjured boy onto a litter, carrying him back into the house infirmary clear of the handler’s reach. Kōya watched the wicket gate latch shut. He couldn’t tear the boy’s contract up in the middle of the pit without bringing the garrison down on them, but the boy would survive the night.
