Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child

Before the factors could say more, the great brass gong suspended above the center pit boomed three times, the bronze vibration rattling the pewter mugs on the tables.

Every gambler in the taproom surged forward toward the timber rail.

Out on the sixty-foot expanse of the main sand floor, the eastern iron portcullis ground upward. A seven-foot fighter encased in overlapping plates of blackened steel marched out into the torchlight, hefting a heavy boar-spear with a two-foot lugs-blade.

From the opposite gate strolled a lean, dark-haired man wearing an unbuttoned wool coat and plain leather boots. His waist carried no belt-scabbard, and his hands rested empty at his sides.

The tiered balconies exploded into a deafening roar.

”Varen!”

”The hound is back from the border!”

”Twenty gold on the coat! Thirty!”

Up on the judge’s rostrum, a herald in a crimson tabard raised a brass speaking-trumpet. ”Ten thousand silver crowns on the house spearman! Step to the slates and lay your marks!”

Kōya frowned at the chalked odds-board rising beside the rostrum. ”Ten thousand silver on a single bout?”

”That’s the price of a merchant ship upstairs,” Lyra murmured, rising on her toes to see over a teamster’s shoulder. ”Whatever they’re fighting for in the center pit, it isn’t tavern copper.”

Down on the sand, the iron bell rang.

The seven-foot spearman wasted zero time on circling. Driving his back boot deep into the grit, he launched a two-handed lunging thrust straight at the center of Varen’s chest—enough steel and momentum to punch through an oak door.

Varen didn’t raise a guard.

At the last fractional instant before the spear point touched his shirt, he pivoted forty-five degrees on his front heel, letting the two-foot blade slide harmlessly past his ribs. Gliding straight down the ash shaft faster than the armored giant could retract his arms, Varen stepped inside the reach and drove the heel of his bare right palm square into the center of the blackened breastplate.

A dull, booming crack—like a sledgehammer striking an anvil—echoed across the cavern.

Steel plate buckled two inches inward. The seven-foot spearman lifted clean off his boots, flew twelve feet backward across the bloody sand, and slammed spine-first into the masonry pit wall before slumping sideways into the dirt.

Three hundred voices screamed at once as silver and gold showered across the betting tables.

Out in the center of the circle, Varen didn’t even bother shaking out his wrist. Turning his back on the unconscious giant while the medics dragged the body through the gate, he walked unhurriedly toward the VIP exit—and paused for one beat as his dark eyes swept the lower taproom pillar.

Across forty yards of torch-smoke and screaming drunks, his gaze met Kōya’s.

Varen’s mouth curved upward in a slow, sharp grin. It was the look of a wolf sniffing iron on another predator’s coat.

Kōya held the stare without blinking until Varen strolled through the gate.

Out in the staging passage beyond the bars, four men in expensive velvet coats immediately closed around the bare-handed fighter: one handing him a linen towel, a second presenting a wax-sealed scroll, and a third clinking a heavy leather purse of gold into his palm before escorting him straight past the halberdiers into the silver-crested archway at the back of the cavern.

”That’s our guide,” Kōya said, pushing his shoulder off the limestone pillar.

Lyra looked from the guarded archway back to Kōya’s face. ”The man who just caved in a steel breastplate with his bare hand? How do you plan to get him in a room with us?”

”By climbing onto his roster.”

Lyra stared at him. ”Yesterday morning you gave me a whole lecture about staying invisible and gathering quiet intelligence.”

”We gathered it. The doors are locked to outsiders.”

”And your quiet solution is jumping into a blood pit?”

”When the front door is guarded by four halberds, you use the service entrance.”

Lyra folded her arms over her satchel strap, narrowing her eyes at his jaw. ”You want to fight him.”

”No.”

”Your mouth just twitched.”

”It didn’t.”

”I’ve been staring at your face for three weeks, Kōya. You get that exact look every time someone moves faster than you expect.”

Ignoring her completely, Kōya walked ten paces across the flagstones and stopped in front of the ink-stained registration clerk.

”Combat registration,” Kōya said.

The clerk didn’t lift his chin from his ledger. ”Tier?”

”Whatever puts me on the card for the back-room bouts before tomorrow night.”

The clerk finally looked up, his bloodshot eyes traveling from Kōya’s scarred knuckles to the twin sword hilts rising behind his shoulder. ”First time on the sand?”

”Yes.”

”Primary weapon?”

Kōya rested his fingertips on the Hero Sword’s leather wrap. ”Sword.”

The clerk jerked his chin past Kōya’s hip toward Lyra. ”Second or healer?”

”She stays behind the outer rail.”

Lyra arched an eyebrow at the back of his coat. ”I do?”

Kōya glanced over his shoulder. ”Someone has to keep their ears open while the crowd is betting.”

She let out a long breath through her nose. ”Fine.”

The clerk slid a blood-flecked parchment square across the trestle. ”Name for the slate?”

Kōya hesitated half a beat. Using his family name in a syndicate ledger was asking for trouble; his given name was already on the gate registry upstairs. ”Kōya.”

The quill scratched across the vellum. ”Guild or house affiliation?”

”None.”

”Origin?”

”Road.”

”Prior pit record?”

Kōya looked past the table toward the raked red sand of Pit Three. ”Enough.”

The clerk gave him a dead-eyed stare that had watched fifty farm boys carried out on shutters. ”They all put that on the form.” Thump. ”Lower pit. Gate Three. Don’t bleed on the judges’ table.”

Kōya took the stamped wooden tally-chip and turned toward the staging chute.

Lyra caught his sleeve two steps from the iron portcullis. ”Try not to bring the ceiling down on our heads.”

”I’ll keep the swings small.”

”Kōya.”

”That was a joke.”

She looked at his stone-flat expression and shook her head. ”When you tell a joke with that face, it sounds like a threat.”

At the mouth of the chute, a heavy-set gatekeeper in riveted mail barred the iron grate with a spear shaft. ”House rules, newcomer. No killing strikes unless the rostrum drops the red flag. No blades thrown into the benches. No stepping back through this grate until the bell rings. Every win moves your chip up one board. Understood?”

Kōya nodded once.

The guard hauled the iron lever back. Counterweights groaned inside the masonry wall, the portcullis rose six feet, and Kōya stepped out onto the coarse, blood-clotted sand of Pit Three.

Up on the timber balconies, the drunks leaning over the rails spotted the fresh tally-number immediately.

”What’s this? They’re sending children out now?”

”Look at his coat, he walked straight off the turnpike!”

”Four silvers says the butcher takes his ear off inside thirty seconds!”

Kōya walked to the center chalk-line and stopped, testing the depth of the loose sand under the balls of his boots. Three inches of dry grit over packed clay—treacherous if you planted your heel too wide on a pivot, solid if you kept your weight centered over your knees.

Across the circle, the opposite gate rose to admit a thick-necked veteran with a criss-cross of old knife scars over his nose, twirling a pair of heavy, forward-curved cleaving daggers.

He spat into the sand and grinned, showing a gap where two molars belonged. ”Wrong cellar to play hero in, boy.”

Kōya drew the Hero Sword from its scabbard with a smooth, quiet rasp of steel, keeping every drop of its luminous aura locked tightly behind his ribs. ”I’m not here for a title.”

The brass bell clanged.

The veteran lunged across the chalk line, kicking up a spray of sand as his right cleaver whistled horizontally toward Kōya’s collarbone.

Kōya swayed back half an inch, letting the heavy tip slice empty air in front of his throat. Before the first blade finished its follow-through, the veteran stepped deep with his left boot and whipped the second dagger upward in a gutting arc aimed for Kōya’s belly.

Kōya turned his wrist and caught the rising steel flat against the strong of his sword.

The heavy impact drove his boot heels an inch back through the sand, striking orange sparks in the torchlight. Up on the rails, the bettors roared.

”Got some iron in your wrist!” the veteran barked, springing back to reset his feet.

Kōya rolled his right shoulder once to loosen the joint.

The veteran charged a second time, swinging the right cleaver high toward the temple.

Kōya ignored the flashing steel entirely, keeping his eyes fixed on the man’s muddy boots. It was the exact same two-beat rhythm as the opening pass: a loud, wide feint with the right hand to force a high parry, while the left heel planted deep to lever the belly-cut up from underneath.

Half a heartbeat before the veteran’s left boot settled into the sand, Kōya stepped straight inside the wide right-hand arc.

He turned the pommel of the Hero Sword and drove the steel cap straight down onto the exposed radial nerve of the man’s left wrist.

Tendons went dead. The second cleaver tumbled harmlessly into the sand. Pivoting on his lead foot, Kōya snapped a low, side-angled kick squarely into the outside hinge of the veteran’s planted left knee.

The joint buckled inward with a thick pop. The big man crashed onto his side in the grit with a strangled grunt—and froze as the cold flat of Kōya’s blade came to rest directly across his windpipe.

Up on the timber balconies, the jeering cut off mid-shout.

The pit judge leaned over the stone parapet, blinked once at the dropped cleaver in the sand, and jerked his white flag skyward. ”Bout to the challenger!”

As the gamblers erupted into curses and cheers, Kōya lifted his steel off the man’s neck and stepped back two paces.

Clutching his swollen knee in the dirt, the veteran stared up at Kōya’s calm face. ”You had my throat open on the step-in.”

”The guard said no killing strikes.”

The veteran stared at him for a beat, then let out a wheezing laugh against the sand. ”You’re a strange bastard, kid.”

Kōya slid the Hero Sword back into its scabbard. First bout: forty-two seconds.

They gave him ten minutes on the stone bench inside the chute before calling his chip to Pit Two.

His second opponent was a wiry Battlemage with a bronze-shod ash staff who opened the bell by hurling three fist-sized spheres of volatile sulfur-flame across the sand. Kōya kept his own mana completely dark. Instead of cutting the fire or throwing up an energy barrier that would light up every sensor in the cavern, he read the mage’s shoulder alignment, ducked beneath the scorching heat of the first bolt, rolled across the sand inside the splash radius of the second, and closed the forty-foot gap before the third incantation cleared the man’s teeth.

One upward flick of his scabbard knocked the ash staff thirty degrees wide; a short palm-strike to the solar plexus folded the mage over; the naked edge of the Hero Sword stopped half an inch from his carotid artery.

Second bout: one minute, ten seconds.

By his third match—against a mercenary swinging a weighted spiked chain—the bookmakers by the taproom had stopped offering ten-to-one odds against his tally number. By the fourth—against an armored shield-breaker carrying a rune-etched mace that made Kōya’s forearm ache for five minutes after every parry—the silk-cuffed syndicate brokers on the second tier had abandoned the other five pits to crowd the railing above Pit One.

Kōya gave them zero flash to write in their ledgers. No glowing white Heroic light, no black Demonic pressure. He fought the way Kaela had drilled him in the mud with a hickory stick when he was twelve: economical footwork, three-inch parries that shed kinetic force instead of fighting it head-on, and instant punishes the millisecond an opponent’s heel overcommitted.

When his fifth opponent—a scarred pit-champion wielding twin hooked sabers—dropped his second blade into the bloodied sand and raised two empty palms in surrender beside the masonry wall, three hundred voices along the balconies were pounding the timber rails in unison:

”Kōya! Kōya! Kōya!”
