Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child

In another part of the world.

The frozen kingdom lay dead and silent beneath a glaring white sky.

Jagged, snow-covered mountains stretched across the desolate horizon, their lethal peaks disappearing into the drifting storm clouds. Frozen rivers wound like silver scars through the deep valleys, and the bitter wind swept howling over the barren landscape.

A solitary woman flew at tremendous speed high above it all.

Her velocity parted the snowstorm around her in a shockwave of displaced air. The bleak landscape blurred into a meaningless streak of white and gray beneath her boots as she crossed the frozen expanse, moving with singular purpose toward a distant mountain range.

Her beautiful face was twisted into a mask of pure irritation.

”Why in the world do I have to follow these stupid Monoliths just to get to him?!” she shouted into the storm.

The howling wind swallowed the latter half of her complaint.

She scowled and accelerated, pushing her mana reserves harder.

The heavy, ornate pendant hanging securely against her chest began to glow with a warm, pulsing light.

A small, distinct beacon pulsed rhythmically within the crystal core.

The woman slowed her flight slightly, glancing down at the jewelry. For a fleeting moment, her irritated expression softened into deep relief.

Then, she looked forward again, her eyes narrowing against the biting wind.

”Just where are you hiding?”

She adjusted her trajectory, letting the pulsing pendant guide her through the blizzard. She flew onward, a single streak of warmth in a dead world, as the crystal continued shining brightly against her heart.

The land was burning to ash.

Searing, unnatural flames climbed rapidly through the ancient, sacred trees and greedily consumed the elegant wooden architecture of an elven settlement. Thick, choking black smoke covered the night sky, turning the moon the color of a bruised plum, while terrified, coughing villagers fled blindly through the burning streets.

Some bravely carried their bleeding companions over their shoulders. Others desperately gripped the small hands of crying children, trying frantically to guide them through the collapsing timber away from the spreading inferno.

A massive, imposing demon stood perfectly still in the center of the destruction.

Crimson-red flames aggressively surrounded his dark, armored body. The fire twisted and curled naturally around his heavy limbs like obedient pets, illuminating his cruel face with a fierce, demonic glow.

Several heavily armed lesser demons stood nervously before him, keeping their distance from the heat.

The Crimson Demon’s expression darkened, the flames around him flaring in response to his rising wrath.

”The targets were successfully located,” his voice boomed, deep and resonant, ”but why haven’t you incompetent fools taken even a single one of them as a hostage?”

The highest-ranking subordinate stepped forward, lowering its horned head in submission. ”My Lord, the local resistance was significantly greater than we expected. They scattered into the deep woods before we could—”

”Fools!”

The crimson flames surged outward in a concussive wave of heat.

The subordinate recoiled sharply, shielding its face as the fire blistered its armor.

”Those specific elves need to be safely captured for the Lord.” The Crimson Demon stepped menacingly forward, his heavy boots crushing burning timber into embers.

”Do you understand your orders? Captured. Restrained. Not slaughtered in the dirt.”

The directive was crystalline. The terrified elves were wanted alive, fodder for the growing collection occurring in the east.

Another piercing, agonized scream echoed from the far side of the burning settlement as a roof collapsed.

The Crimson Demon turned his glowing eyes toward the sound, utterly indifferent to the suffering.

”Find them in the woods. Bring them to me.”

The terrified subordinates scattered immediately, desperate to fulfill the command.

The crimson flames continued relentlessly spreading, eating the ancient timber. And the sacred elven land burned slowly to ash beneath the smoke-choked sky.

Mizuki sat completely, utterly alone inside the dark cell.

The rough stone walls were freezing cold, leeching the body heat directly from her bones. A narrow, heavily barred opening near the high ceiling allowed a thin, cruel strip of pale moonlight to enter, but it did nothing to brighten the suffocating darkness pressing in around her.

Her slender wrists were heavily restrained by thick, rune-carved iron cuffs bolted directly to the stone floor. Her entire body ached with a deep fatigue.

She had long since lost track of time. She didn’t know how many agonizing hours she had spent trying to logically understand her horrific situation, how many times she had frantically searched the iron restraints for a mechanical weakness, or how many times she had closed her eyes and vividly imagined a way out of the nightmare.

Every tactical possibility had crushingly ended in the exact same place.

The cold cell.

The absolute silence.

The endless waiting.

Mizuki slowly lowered her heavy head, resting her forehead against her knees.

”Kōya...”

Her voice was a whisper, cracked and dry from thirst.

She vividly remembered his face. The intense, serious way he had looked at her before the world had fallen apart. The fierce, absolute way he had implicitly promised to always come for her.

She desperately wanted to believe in that promise. She needed it to survive.

But time was a cruel, grinding weapon when a person had nothing to do except sit in the dark and wait for it to pass. It eroded certainty. It bred despair.

Her numb fingers curled tightly against the freezing stone floor.

”Please...”

She swallowed hard, fighting the lump in her throat.

”Please come.”

A single, hot tear slipped silently down her dirt-streaked cheek.

She fiercely wiped it away with her bound hands. She did not want to cry. Not because she believed she was strong enough to effortlessly endure the psychological torture, but because she was genuinely terrified that if she finally allowed herself to begin weeping, she might never be able to stop. She might shatter completely.

Her desperate thoughts drifted toward another name. A name that carried the weight of a lifetime of love.

”Seiya...”

The dark cell remained indifferently silent.

Mizuki squeezed her eyes shut. She had absolutely no proof that either of the men she loved could ever actually reach her here. She had no logical certainty that she would even survive long enough to ever see their faces again.

But somewhere deep inside her chest, buried beneath the fear and the exhaustion, a small, stubborn part of her soul continued to fiercely hold on.

It was not arrogant confidence. It was not mathematical certainty.

It was simply a mother and a wife’s absolute refusal to let hope completely disappear into the dark.

Freezing, unrelenting rain poured in sheets through the narrow, filthy alleyway in the lower districts of Slane.

Dark, muddy water ran in rivulets along the uneven cobblestones, collecting in deep puddles around discarded refuse and broken pieces of rotting wood. The towering brick walls on either side were slick and dark with moisture, and the distant, muffled sounds of the bustling city seemed strangely, impossibly far away from this desolate place.

Kaela lay completely motionless on the hard ground.

Her heavy traveler’s clothes and leather armor were entirely soaked through. Her silver-white hair clung messily to the scarred sides of her face, and her battered, exhausted body barely moved beneath the relentless assault of the rain.

She had once proudly, fiercely believed that true strength meant being physically able to protect the vulnerable people standing behind her.

Her legendary master had taught her exactly how to fight. Her bright, eager students had implicitly trusted her with their futures. She had carried that heavy, sacred responsibility with unwavering pride for years.

But now...

Her master was dead.

Her students were dead.

And she had been completely, utterly unable to save a single one of them when the fire came.

The horrific memories returned in jagged fragments, piercing her mind. The overwhelming helplessness. The rivers of blood in the courtyard. The exact, devastating moment when she had finally realized that no amount of physical effort, no amount of desperate skill, would ever be enough to stop the tide.

Her numb, trembling fingers moved weakly against the wet stone.

She desperately tried to push herself up out of the mud. Her muscular arm trembled violently under the strain, entirely depleted of mana and adrenaline.

She collapsed heavily back onto the stones, splashing muddy water across her face.

A broken, ragged sound—half-sob, half-growl—escaped her throat.

”Why...”

The heavy rain instantly swallowed the weak word.

Why exactly had she survived the slaughter? Why had her strength failed when it mattered most? Why had she been cruelly left behind in the mud when the people she loved and wanted to protect were gone?

She turned her scarred face away, resting her cheek against the cold, filthy ground.

For a very long time, she did not move a single muscle, surrendering to the void.

Then, the distinct sound of boots entered the mouth of the alley.

Slow. Measured. Deliberate.

Someone had stopped walking, standing perfectly still nearby in the rain.

Kaela did not have the strength to raise her head.

A long, dark shadow stretched ominously across the wet cobblestones, falling over her broken body.

The cloaked figure slowly, casually approached the unconscious beastfolk warrior.

The rain continued falling, washing away the blood.

The morning sun was incredibly, beautifully warm.

A gentle, clean breeze crossed the wide, open dirt road, moving softly through the tall green grass beside it and carrying the faint scent of damp earth and distant pine trees.

Kōya walked steadily forward, his dark eyes clear and focused.

Directly beside him, Lyra happily adjusted the leather strap of her new satchel, making sure her magic books were resting comfortably against her hip.

The long road stretched invitingly toward the horizon, winding lazily through the beautiful countryside before disappearing completely beyond a distant, sunlit rise.

For the first time in several agonizing days, there was absolutely no immediate danger pressing against their backs.

No apocalyptic battle. No relentless demonic pursuit. No desperate, split-second tactical decision that had to be made within the next few heartbeats to ensure their survival.

There was only the open road.

And the bright sunlight.

Lyra looked up toward the clear blue sky, shielding her eyes with one hand.

”It’s really nice out today,” she noted, her voice light.

Kōya glanced sideways at her. ”Yeah.”

She smiled faintly, a genuine, relaxed expression. ”It feels strange.”

”What does?”

”Just... walking somewhere simply because I actively want to.”

Kōya did not answer immediately, letting the words hang in the warm air.

Lyra looked back down at the dirt road, kicking a small pebble. ”Before, someone else always forcefully decided exactly where I had to go. Exactly where I had to sleep. Exactly what I was supposed to do with my hands.”

Her pale fingers tightened securely around the leather strap of her satchel.

”But now...”

She looked ahead, her eyes shining with quiet determination.

”Now, I can actually decide for myself.”

Kōya watched her profile for a long, quiet moment, committing the change to memory.

Then, he turned his gaze back toward the long road ahead.

”Then let’s keep going.”

Lyra nodded firmly. ”Yeah.”

She moved a little bit closer to him on the path, walking proudly beside him as an equal.

Neither of them knew exactly what terrifying challenges awaited them beyond the very next green hill.

Kōya did not definitively know what horrific things had happened to Mizuki in the dark.

He did not know what had tragically become of Kaela in the filthy alleys of Slane.

He did not know exactly how many thousands of innocent people were currently suffering beneath the brutal systems and ancient powers he had quietly sworn to destroy completely.

But he intimately knew that the muddy road ahead was still wide open.

And for now, Lyra was walking it entirely by her own choice.

The warm sunlight touched their backs as they continued steadily forward, moving together into the unknown.

Freezing rain fell over Kaela’s broken body. Darkness surrounded Mizuki’s cell. Beneath the open sky, Kōya and Lyra walked toward tomorrow. The world had not stood still.

For some, tomorrow had already begun. For others, it remained a fragile hope they could only pray to reach.
