Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child

Kōya halted on the bottom tread of the spiral stone stair, his right palm resting on the Hero Sword’s pommel as a subterranean draft pushed up the shaft.

Fifty feet above their heads, Slane’s market avenues smelled of roasted chestnuts, mule dung, and coal smoke. Down here in the deep limestone cuts beneath the eastern warehouse district, the air tasted of copper blood, rancid tallow, sour sweat, and damp sawdust. Through the iron-grated archway ahead rolled a continuous, low-ceilinged roar: hundreds of boots stamping timber bleachers, heavy silver coins clattering across oak boards, and the flat, ringing clack of notched steel meeting steel.

Lyra stepped down onto the flagstone landing directly behind Kōya’s left shoulder, holding the strap of her leather satchel tight against her ribs. “What is this place?”

“The bottom of the ladder,” Kōya said, scanning the torchlit mouth of the tunnel.

Getting a compass bearing on this staircase had taken half the morning and three separate bribes. A hollow-eyed turnip seller near the eastern tollgate had muttered a street name over a basket of greens; a dockhand with a missing ear behind the salt warehouses had pocketed two of Kōya’s silver pieces and pointed a thumb toward a boarded-up cellar beneath a cooperage; a territory corporal on patrol had said nothing at all, though the way his hand dropped to his sword-belt at the mention of the lower pits had confirmed they were standing on the right flagstones.

Stepping through the archway brought them onto a wide stone gallery overlooking a subterranean quarry carved out of the living rock.

Six sunken, sand-floored fighting pits honeycombed the cavern floor, separated by thick masonry walls and ringed by three tiers of timber viewing balconies. Rope-and-plank bridges swayed above the walkways, linking rowdy betting halls and ale-taps on the outer wall to iron-barred staging cages down on the pit level.

Directly below the gallery rail, two men circled each other across blood-darkened sand.

A barrel-chested brute with a shaved skull swung a double-bitted broad-axe in a low horizontal arc. Across from him, a leaner fighter in patched boiled leather caught the iron head on a round linden-wood shield. Oak planks split down the grain with a sound like a snapping pine bough, showering white wood splinters across the sand as the smaller man’s knees buckled.

Three paces from Kōya’s elbow, a merchant in a sweat-stained velvet doublet slammed a fistful of gold crowns onto a bookmaker’s table.

“The shield-man’s arm is broken!”

“Ten crowns says he makes the bell!”

“Cut his legs out!”

Down in the pit, the smaller swordsman staggered back against the masonry wall. The broad-axe whistled down toward his collarbone; he threw himself sideways into the red sand, taking a three-inch gash across his leather pauldron as the axe blade gouged sparks out of the stone behind him.

The gallery bleachers shook under the roar of three hundred throats.

“This goes far past an illegal tavern ring,” Kōya murmured, tracking the uniformed clerks moving between the bookmakers’ podiums with locked iron strongboxes.

Lyra’s fingers curled around the gallery rail as she looked down at the barred staging pens beneath the opposite balcony. “The smuggling tunnels we found yesterday feed straight into those lower gates.”

Once Kōya looked past the flying sand and the screaming drunks, the machinery underneath the noise stood out in plain sight. Up on the second-tier balconies, syndicate factors in clean silk cuffs leaned over brass railings beside private bodyguards, trading slips of stamped parchment with licensed slave brokers. Down on the stone aprons between the pits, handlers carrying iron prods marched fighters from the holding cells to the weigh-in tables.

Half the combatants stretching their shoulders by the weapon racks wore the patched gambesons of free sellswords chasing prize money. The rest wore stripped-down linen trousers and carried glowing amber or violet rune-brands around both wrists.

Battle-contract slaves.

Down in Pit Four to their left, an iron gate lifted to admit a boy no older than seventeen. His ribs showed through his torn tunic, and his knuckles were white around the grip of a rusted short-sword as he stared across the twenty-foot circle at a scarred veteran twice his weight.

The pit bell clanged. The veteran charged straight across the center line and hammered an overhead chop into the boy’s hastily raised guard, driving him to one knee in the sand.

Kōya’s jaw tightened. “They’re mixing collared stock with free mercenaries.”

“Look at the balconies above that pit,” Lyra said quietly, raising her chin half an inch so she wouldn’t draw the eyes of a passing guard. “The men in the fur collars on the second tier are guild directors from the upper exchange. The ones in the black mail by the pillar are free company captains scouting recruits.” She shifted her gaze toward a recessed stone archway at the back of the cavern, flanked by four halberdiers wearing silver demon-crests on their breastplates. “And that passage at the rear leads to the private boxes—for patrons who don’t care to breathe the same air as the crowd.”

“Men who stay off the public street,” Kōya said.

“Exactly.”

“Then that archway is our door.”

Slipping into the steady stream of gamblers and trainers moving down the wide stone ramp, they descended to the main staging floor.

Near the base of the steps, a clerk in ink-stained linen sleeves sat behind a heavy trestle table stacked with parchment forms and lead tally-stamps. Kōya slowed his pace beside a stone buttress, watching a broad-backed mercenary lay a silver licensing mark on the wood.

The clerk didn’t look up from his ledger. “Classification?”

“Combatant.”

“Free citizen?”

“Aye.”

“Arrears or magistrate liens?”

“None.”

“Guild bond?”

“Independent.”

The clerk brought his iron stamp down on the parchment with a flat thump. “Lower tier. Pit Three. Keep your blade clear of the judges.”

As the mercenary pocketed his tally and walked off, a handler stepped up and shoved a gaunt, grey-bearded fighter up to the trestle. Faint violet runes pulsed beneath the grime on the prisoner’s scarred wrists.

The clerk dipped his quill in the inkhorn. “Slave contract?”

The prisoner kept his eyes fixed on his bare toes and gave a single nod.

“Term remaining on the paper?”

“Three years,” the handler answered for him.

“Bout classification?”

“Survival.”

Thump. The iron stamp left a fresh ring of black ink on the page. “Lower pit. Gate Six. Next in line.”

Kōya stood motionless by the buttress. Not once had the clerk raised his voice or sneered at the man in chains. Processing a three-year death sentence took the exact same dip of the quill and four ounces of wrist pressure as logging a crate of salted cod upstairs.

Beside Kōya’s elbow, Lyra hadn’t drawn a breath since the violet runes passed them.

“Lyra,” Kōya said under the din of the crowd.

“I’m fine.” She kept her eyes on the gaunt fighter disappearing into the gloom of Gate Six. “Half the men in this hall walked down those stairs because they wanted the gold.”

“And the other half came in chains.”

“Not even chains, at first,” she said softly, watching a young free-fighter at the next table sign his mark to a high-interest equipment loan with a shaking hand. “Some of them signed the paper with their own hand when their rent fell behind, telling themselves they’d win three bouts and buy their name back before winter.”

Kōya looked at the loan broker smiling over the boy’s shoulder. A trap didn’t need iron jaws if hunger walked the quarry straight into the pit.

“We need someone who knows who sits behind that silver-crested archway,” Kōya said.

“If we walk up and ask the clerks, we’ll have four halberds in our ribs before you finish the sentence,” Lyra said. “Look at the floor.”

Every ten yards across the staging apron, eyes were working. Brokers watched the footwork of the survivors coming out of the gates; syndicate runners watched the brokers’ hand signals; the halberdiers by the rear arch watched anyone whose boots lingered too long near the restricted rope.

“Then we let the tavern talk to us first,” Kōya said.

They drifted thirty paces left into the shadow of the low-vaulted taproom carved into the cavern wall, taking a spot behind a square limestone pillar where porters were rolling fresh kegs of small beer onto the racks. Kōya leaned his shoulder against the rough stone facing the main pit, while Lyra stood half a step behind him with her back to a wooden booth occupied by three syndicate factors drinking spiced wine.

For five minutes the talk behind the partition was arena dross: a hamstring tear in Pit Two, a rigged weigh-in on a northern troll-hound, an argument over sixty silvers owed on a split decision.

Then a heavy goblet thumped onto the oak table behind Lyra’s shoulder.

“The main hall carpenters finished the upper boxes at noon,” a deep, gravelly voice said. “Two days ahead of the magistrate’s schedule.”

Kōya kept his eyes fixed on the sand pit out front, his chin tilting a fraction to catch the reply.

“They had no choice,” a second factor answered, his voice nasal and clipped. “Four of the eastern barons rode through the gate on Monday. House Vane brought thirty retainers alone.”

“A week early? For what?”

“Word leaked out of the appraisal vaults. And when the high houses smell bloodline stock, the Demon Peers aren’t far behind them.”

A third man let out a low, dry chuckle over the rim of his cup. “Zarth the Third’s steward already claimed the center balcony. The Peers don’t wait for the printed catalog.”

“How many top-grade lots did the catchers bring in this season?” the gravelly voice asked.

“More than the vaults have held since the border war,” the nasal factor said, dropping his tone so low Lyra had to lean her ear an inch closer to the timber divider. “The consortium is keeping the specialty warriors under double lock until the final afternoon. Private deposits have already cleared on three of them.”

“And the prime female stock?”

“Held in the lower cistern cells until the main stage opens. Zarth and two of the southern lords have already sent inspectors down to verify the crests.”

Lyra’s spine went rigid against the pillar. Kōya kept his gaze aimed across the arena so the men in the booth wouldn’t catch a turned head, though he shifted his left boot back two inches until the side of his calf brushed hers—a solid, silent anchor in the gloom.

Inside the booth, wine splashed into a cup.

“Tell your teamsters to double the outriders on the eastern transfer tunnel tonight,” the first factor said.

“Why? The city watch is bought and paid for.”

“Because two strangers were down in the administrative ledgers yesterday afternoon asking the Chief Broker about Demon Peer consignments. Until the hammer falls on the final lot, nobody unvetted gets within fifty yards of the upper corridors.”

Kōya’s eyes narrowed.

“Us?” Lyra breathed against his sleeve.

“Has to be.”
