Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child

Breathing slowly through his nose, a thin film of sweat and sand sticking to his jawline, Kōya sheathed his blade and walked back through the iron portcullis.

Lyra stood waiting three paces inside the torchlit staging tunnel, her arms folded over her chest and one eyebrow arched high.

”I distinctly remember you telling the man in the pit that you weren’t here to make a name,” she said.

”I’m not.”

”Three hundred drunks are trying to break the balcony railings shouting it.”

”I can’t control what drunks shout.”

Her mouth curved into a wide, teasing grin. ”Admit it. You enjoyed stretching your legs.”

Kōya brushed a crust of dried sand off his left cuff. ”My right forearm is numb from that mace in the fourth bout. The fights are just the toll at the gate.”

”And the toll bought us what?”

Kōya lifted his chin toward the velvet-roped archway at the far end of the staging floor. ”Their attention.”

Lyra followed his glance.

Standing just outside the silver-crested halberdiers, three wealthy syndicate factors in fur-trimmed robes had their heads together over a wax tablet, one of them pointing a jeweled finger straight at Kōya’s sword belt. Leaning against the dressed stone beside them—now wearing a clean linen shirt under his dark coat and rolling a gold crown across his knuckles—stood Varen.

Catching Kōya’s eye, Varen pushed off the wall, left the merchants behind, and strolled across the flagstones toward them.

”Five bouts in an afternoon without using a drop of mana,” Varen said, halting four paces away with his thumbs hooked in his coat pockets.

Kōya rested his hand lightly on his belt buckle. ”The bouts were short.”

”In the lower pits, five straight wins in one shift means a man is either starving to death or hiding nine-tenths of what he knows.” Varen tilted his head, studying the steady rise and fall of Kōya’s chest. ”Your boots are good leather, so you aren’t starving.”

Kōya said nothing.

Varen’s dark eyes shifted past Kōya’s shoulder to Lyra, taking in the clean wool of her dress and the watchful set of her shoulders before returning to Kōya. ”And she’s no pit second.”

”She’s with me,” Kōya said flatly.

”Clearly.” Varen let out a dry chuckle. ”Outlanders usually stick to the upper taverns during auction week. Walking down here and kicking over five house favorites in an hour is a loud way to see the sights.”

”Is that a warning from the syndicate?” Kōya asked.

”If the syndicate wanted to warn you, I’d be charging you fifty silvers for the message.” Varen jerked his thumb back over his shoulder toward the guarded archway. ”You’re looking for a door into the upper circles, aren’t you?”

Kōya’s posture stilled. ”What makes you say that?”

”Because yesterday afternoon, a boy matching your coat and a girl with a leather satchel walked into the lower administrative vaults and asked a demon broker which Peers were auditing the books.”

Beside Kōya, Lyra’s fingers slid half an inch toward the flap of her satchel.

Varen held up an open palm, his grin easy and unbothered. ”Keep the wand in the bag, little sister. Half the men who come to Slane ask stupid questions their first day in town. The only thing the house cares about is whether you’re strong enough to survive the answers.”

”Who do you work for?” Kōya asked.

”Myself, mostly. And whoever pays my purse on Fridays.” Varen turned on his heel toward the halberdiers. ”Walk with me. You’ve earned a look at the real floor.”

Kōya exchanged a quick glance with Lyra, then followed the tall fighter past the silver-crested guards. At a two-finger wave from Varen, the halberdiers parted their shafts without asking for a tally-chip.

The stone passage beyond the arch angled sharply downward, leaving the roar of the public cavern behind until the only sound was the click of their boot-heels on swept marble tiles. Sweetened lamp oil and expensive spiced tobacco replaced the stench of tallow and unwashed wool.

Sixty yards down, the tunnel opened onto a circular viewing gallery draped in heavy crimson velvet.

Below them lay a single, octagonal fighting pit floored in crushed white quartz instead of dirty sand. Fewer than forty spectators occupied the cushioned gallery chairs around the perimeter—every one of them flanked by scarred retainers in runed plate or high-tier demon attendants. No one shouted; no one pounded on the railings. Clerks glided between the chairs on soft-soled slippers, recording wagers written in gold ingots and property deeds on strips of ivory.

”How deep under the city does this cut?” Kōya asked, looking down at the white quartz floor.

”Deep enough that the city watch pretends the bedrock is solid,” Varen said, leaning his forearms on the velvet rail. ”You want a seat at the Mega Slave Auction.”

Kōya didn’t waste breath denying it. ”I want to see the faces in the upper boxes.”

”Anyone with ten silvers can buy a standing ticket on the main public floor and watch the common laborers get sold,” Varen said. ”If you want through the inner doors where the noble houses, consortium directors, and Demon Peers do their real bidding, silver won’t buy you past the gate.”

”What buys it?”

”Proof that you belong among the predators.” Varen pointed a finger down into the white quartz octagon as the opposing iron gates slid open silently on oiled tracks. ”Watch.”

Two combatants stepped onto the crushed stone. On the left walked a lean human swordsman carrying an unlaced rapier that hummed with a high, pale-blue wind enchantment; on the right stalked a seven-foot wolf-kin beastman whose wrists bore the deep crimson brand of a high-blood slave contract, wielding a pair of heavy iron tonfa.

Neither fighter saluted the boxes. When the silver chime sounded, they crossed the quartz in dead silence.

Steel met iron in a blurring, six-strike exchange that cracked the quartz tiles beneath their boots and sent shockwaves of stray wind-mana slicing three-inch grooves into the stone barrier walls. Every feint was lethal; every parry missed bone by a hair’s breadth. Up in the velvet chairs, the silk-robed patrons watched the blood hit the white stone without a single cheer, their eyes cold and calculating as they weighed the market value of every tendon and spell.

”The cavern upstairs is a slaughterhouse to keep the teamsters drunk and happy,” Varen said quietly beside Kōya’s ear. ”This room is an audition. The nobles and the Peers use the inner pits to test new enforcers, settle blood-debts between syndicates, and vet outsiders before letting them into the restricted auctions.”

Kōya tracked the wolf-kin fighter deflecting a throat-thrust with an inch to spare. ”A filter.”

”A lucrative one,” Varen agreed. ”The stronger you prove yourself on that stone, the higher the doors open upstairs. Win a qualification token down here, and the guards at the Mega Slave Auction wave you straight into the restricted tiers—no pedigree required.”

Kōya turned his head from the pit to look at Varen’s profile. ”When is the next qualification bout?”

Varen’s teeth flashed in the crimson lamplight. ”Tomorrow night. One final qualification brawl before the auction hall opens its doors.”

”One match?”

”Twenty-four candidates locked in the main cage at once,” Varen said, straightening up from the velvet rail. ”Free mercenaries, syndicate ringers, and contracted killers whose owners want a seat at the high table. No teams, no rounds. Stand on your feet when the bell rings at the end, and the house hands you a stamped iron pass to the inner ring.”

Kōya looked back down at the blood spattering the white quartz below as the rapier fighter opened a gash across the beastman’s ribs. ”Twenty-four.”

”Show up at the main registration desk at sundown tomorrow if you still want inside,” Varen said, turning toward the exit arch. ”Or take your five-win purse from today and ride out the eastern gate while your lungs still hold air. Makes no difference to me.”

His boots clicked away down the marble passage, leaving the two of them alone at the rail.

Lyra looked down at the silent, bloody duel on the quartz floor, her hand resting over the wooden wand inside her satchel. ”So the fighting pits aren’t a side business at all.”

”No,” Kōya said, watching a syndicate clerk upstairs hand a sealed ivory slip to a demon envoy across the gallery. ”The market on the street, the smuggling tunnels, the pits, and the auction stage—it’s all one building. This is the service elevator.”

He turned away from the velvet rail and started back up the marble passage toward the public cavern.

Lyra fell into step beside him, letting out a long, weary sigh as the distant roar of the outer bleachers crept back into the stone walls. ”Tomorrow night.”

”Tomorrow night,” Kōya confirmed.

”Twenty-four fighters in one cage.”

”Saves time over fighting them one by one.”

”You realize that if you beat twenty-four men at once, the drunks upstairs are going to build a statue of you by Thursday.”

Kōya glanced sideways at her. ”That’s what you’re worried about right now?”

”I’m worried about walking into a secret auction next to a boy whose name half the city is chanting at the top of their lungs.”

”I didn’t ask them to chant it.”

”Which only makes them shout louder.”

As they emerged through the silver-crested archway back onto the noisy, sawdust-strewn floor of the main cavern, the crowd around Pit One roared as another fighter went down in the sand.

Kōya rested his thumb against the guard of the Hero Sword at his hip, his eyes tracking the high, guarded balconies near the cavern roof—measuring the climb still waiting between the bloody sand under his boots and the men who held his family in chains.
