Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child

Kōya hauled back on the leather reins to keep their mare from scraping her flank against an iron-plated guild wagon crowding the thoroughfare.

Muddy ruts choked the eastern highway into Slane, packed wheel-to-wheel with groaning freight carts, mounted mercenary outriders, and pedestrian porters bent double beneath roped bales of wool. Smells of coal smoke, frying mutton fat, and mule sweat pooled thick between the buildings—not a single watchtower or siege rampart in sight. Kōya had braced himself for another militarized demon citadel carved into a crag, a fortress with a clear wall to breach and a warlord at the center.

Slane had built a counting-house instead.

Paved avenues radiated outward from the gates like spokes on a wheel, linking outer industrial wards to inner banking squares. Four-story stone warehouses blocked the midday sun for six blocks at a stretch, their loading bays feeding noisy street markets where blacksmiths, apothecaries, dice-taverns, and violet-lit arcane parlors fought for every inch of frontage. Wagons rolled past under the banners of three different merchant syndicates, while armored clerks tallied manifests at iron-gated tollbooths.

Everything in the territory moved, traded hands, and carried a price tag.

Then the first cage-wagon rattled past their wheel.

Kōya’s knuckles whitened around the reins. The low-bed dray was framed in rusted iron bars, its axle groaning under the weight of twenty people packed knee-to-chest on the straw. Men with quarry dust caked into their beards, women clutching the rags of torn shifts, and three small children pressed into their mothers’ skirts all wore heavy iron collars etched with glowing amber runes.

A few prisoners gripped the bars and stared wildly at the passing stalls. Most sat slack-spined against the iron slats, their eyes hollowed out beyond tears. One grey-haired man near the tailgate stared straight down at the churning mud between the wagon wheels without blinking once.

Kōya tracked the cage until the crowd swallowed its iron frame. Thirty yards ahead, a second barred wagon rolled out of a side lane, followed closely by a third.

Beside the boardwalk to their right, a storefront with polished glass panes displayed rows of rune-carved manacles and brass neck-rings on velvet stands. Out on the cobblestones before the door, a plump proprietor in a fur-trimmed vest held a leather ledger open for two customers dressed in layered court silk.

”The younger one in Lot Four has twice the back-muscle,” the proprietor said, tapping a quill against the parchment.

”What’s the reserve on him?” the taller nobleman asked, twisting a ruby signet ring around his thumb.

”Depends entirely on how many seasons you expect him to last in the timber camps, my lord.”

All three men shared an easy, well-fed laugh.

Kōya’s jaw locked until his molars ached. They were haggling over the lifespan of a boy’s spine in broad daylight, using the exact tone a butcher used to price salted pork.

Up the avenue, the trade operated on every corner. Handlers with braided leather whips marched chained coffles from the staging yards toward the artisan quarters; clerks sat beneath canvas awnings stamping bills of ownership; territory guards in polished breastplates checked collar serial numbers against wax tablets before waving buyers through.

Nobody on the boardwalk looked twice.

Housewives carrying baskets of turnips stepped neatly around the dragging chains to keep their hems out of the mud. Apprentices munched candied nuts five feet from a weeping girl in a neck-iron. Carpenters hammered roof joists while brokers shouted bids across the cobbles.

”They don’t even bother with back alleys,” Kōya said, pitching his voice low over the clatter of hooves.

On the wagon bench beside him, Lyra kept her chin down, her eyes fixed on the pleated wool of her skirt. ”No.”

”They’re running auctions in the middle of the main street.”

”Yes.”

Kōya glanced sideways at her pale profile. ”Back at the checkpoint, you told me Slane had a slavery problem.”

”I did.”

”Slavery isn’t a problem here, Lyra. It’s the foundation.”

Lyra stayed quiet while a troop of mounted guards trotted past their left wheel. Slowly, she lifted her head and looked out over the sea of slate roofs and guild banners. ”It wasn’t this brazen a few years ago,” she murmured.

Kōya kept the mare at a walk, listening.

”There were always untouchable people at the top.” She raised a hand to point toward the high marble spires rising from the inner hill district. ”Syndicate masters, noble houses, high-blood demons with deep vaults.” Dropping her hand, she looked toward the cramped, soot-streaked tenements crowding the canal ditch to their right. ”And there were always families in the lower wards one bad winter away from starving.”

Her fingers curled into the hem of her wool cloak. ”Back then, it happened behind closed shutters. A weaver defaulted on a loan, and his daughter vanished before dawn. A farmhand took a drink in the wrong dockside tavern and woke up in a mine twenty leagues east. Honest citizens could walk to market and tell themselves those people had run off to seek their fortune.”

Her voice thinned as she looked across the thoroughfare, where a freshly painted wooden placard advertising human lots swung beside a greengrocer’s apple barrels.

”Now the syndicates own the courts,” Lyra said. ”Nobody has to pretend anymore.”

Kōya’s eyes narrowed as he scanned the placards.

”They categorize everyone on the ledgers,” Lyra continued quietly. ”Quarry hands. Pit gladiators. Artisans with mana affinities.” Her breath caught in her throat. ”And young women for the upper estates.”

Kōya turned his head toward her. ”For what work?”

Lyra stared straight ahead between the mare’s ears. ”For the bedrooms.”

Ten yards away, at the mouth of a cobbled court between a winery and a tailor’s shop, a silver-haired nobleman in a velvet riding coat used the ivory tip of his cane to tilt a young woman’s chin toward the light while a broker recited her provenance. The girl stood with her hands chained at her waist, staring at the brick wall behind the buyer’s ear as if she had already left her body behind.

Heat pricked beneath the skin of Kōya’s right forearm, dark Demonic Mana coiling against his pulse before he forced his fingers flat against his thigh.

Out of the corner of her eye, Lyra saw the white line around his knuckles. ”Where I was kept before Zeref bought me wasn’t like that,” she said quickly.

Kōya looked down at her. ”How was it different?”

”The tavern master took my contract because my father died owing him rent,” she said, resting her palm over the leather satchel in her lap. ”He wanted someone to scrub pots and carry ale pitchers sixteen hours a day without wages. It was a cage, and I hated every hour of it—yet it was one greedy man in a small town.”

She looked out at the endless traffic clogging the avenue. ”Slane is an engine. Catchers raid the border villages, brokers grade the stock, magistrates stamp the seals, and teamsters haul the cages across six territories. Take one merchant out, and ten clerks step up to balance his books before supper.”

Kōya stared down the boulevard in silence.

Cutting Zeref’s throat in a ruined castle had been simple arithmetic: one monster at the top of a tower. You couldn’t kill a city block with a single sword stroke when half the population earned their bread oiling the gears.

Ahead of them, traffic slowed around a circular plaza where a crowd of fifty travelers and guild factors had gathered beneath a thirty-foot timber scaffold.

Lyra pointed past a silk merchant’s carriage. ”Look at the scaffolding.”

Kōya guided the mare toward the curb. Raised above the crowd on iron brackets stood an enormous lacquered signboard lettered in bright crimson and gold leaf:

THE ANNUAL MEGA SLAVE AUCTION

Kōya read the three words twice. ”An annual festival?”

All the warmth drained from Lyra’s cheeks. ”The Mega Slave Auction. Every autumn, the syndicates hold their grand clearinghouse here.” She pulled her cloak tighter around her shoulders as she scanned the well-dressed factors taking notes below the board. ”The notices at the gate said this year’s catalog is the largest in a decade.”

Below the crimson banner, smaller panels listed the upcoming categories in ornate calligraphic script: Tested Pit Champions. High-Tier Arcane Bloodlines. Exotic Beastfolk Specimens. Untouched Consorts for Discerning Patrons.

”Who bids at this level?” Kōya asked.

”Everyone with real power in the east,” Lyra said. ”High nobles. Guild directors. Envoys from the inner territories. And the Demon Peers.”

Kōya’s attention snapped from the signboard back to her face. ”Demon Peers attend in person?”

”They take the upper boxes every year,” Lyra said, her voice dropping so the factors nearby wouldn’t overhear. ”The syndicates hold back their rarest captives for months to put them on that stage. High-tier warriors, rare mages, and anyone who caught a Peer’s eye during the border raids.”

”Every autumn,” Kōya murmured.

”Like a harvest fair,” she said bitterly. ”Half the city comes to bid, and the other half sells them wine and rooms while they watch.”

Kōya looked past the crimson signboard toward the tiered roofs of the central administrative ward rising against the afternoon sky. He had ridden into Slane expecting to spend weeks kicking down cellar doors in the slums to find a trace of the network that had raided his home. Instead, the architects of that ruin were putting their names on a public guest list.

”When do the doors open?” Kōya asked.

”Three days,” Lyra said. She hesitated, glancing at the sword hilt behind his shoulder. ”We should scout the hall tomorrow.”

”I don’t care about the stage,” Kōya said.

Lyra blinked up at him. ”You don’t?”

”I care about the upper boxes.” Kōya rested his forearm across his knee, his eyes fixed on the gilded crests painted along the bottom of the billboard. ”The Peers and the syndicate heads who bankroll the border raids will all be sitting under one roof. One of them knows which route took my mother’s caravan—and what Zeref did to Yuna.”

Lyra gave a slow nod. ”A room full of witnesses.”

”Exactly.”
