Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child

Kōya stopped.

The terrified question had escaped her lips before she could stop herself. Kōya turned to face her. He studied her anxious expression. “Nothing.”

Lyra frowned. “Nothing?”

“Nothing.”

“That is impossible in this world.”

“No, it is not.”

“Everyone wants something in return for power or money.”

Kōya looked past her, toward the road stretching into the east. “Maybe.” He looked back into her eyes. “But not everything has to be a transaction.”

Lyra didn’t have an answer. They continued walking toward the edge of town. That single sentence followed her for the rest of the morning.

She had heard people speak with false kindness before. Masters who called themselves kind. People in the borderlands had occasionally given her scraps of food, torn clothes, or empty smiles.

There had always been a reason behind them. A condition. A debt. A reminder of her lack of worth.

This was different. Kōya didn’t seem to understand why accepting a gift was so difficult for her. Perhaps that was what made it different.

He didn’t demand gratitude or obedience. He simply helped her survive. ℯℓ.

By late afternoon, they had finished their preparations. They didn’t purchase a horse or a carriage; those drew too much attention on the eastern roads. Kōya packed their supplies into two travel packs. Lyra shouldered her new leather satchel, feeling the weight of the books inside.

She noticed something resting on top of Kōya’s heavy pack. A thick, waterproof blanket.

“You bought this too?”

“Yes.”

“I already have one.”

“That one is for emergencies.”

“I don’t understand.”

“If yours gets soaked in the freezing rain again, you will need a dry replacement to avoid hypothermia.”

Lyra stared at him. “You think of everything.”

“No.” He adjusted the leather straps on his sword harness. “I just dislike unnecessary problems.”

She smiled, shaking her head. “That is disappointing.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought you were just secretly very thoughtful.”

“I am not.”

“You bought me a dry blanket.”

“Because you might get hypothermia.”

“You bought me a magic wand.”

“Because you stated you wanted to learn offensive magic.”

“You bought me new clothes.”

“Because yours were falling apart.”

Lyra’s mouth dropped open in mock outrage. “My old clothes were not terrible.”

“They were falling apart at the seams.”

“They were comfortable.”

“They were falling apart comfortably.” ⅇℓ.

Lyra stared at him, defeated by his logic. Then, she burst out laughing.

Kōya smiled faintly, turning toward the road.

They began the march east, leaving the safety of the town behind.

Their footsteps settled into a steady rhythm. Lyra looked down at the leather satchel resting against her hip. She opened the flap. Her books were safe inside. Her wand rested beside them. She ran her fingers over the smooth leather.

“Nobody has ever bought something for me simply because I needed it.”

Kōya glanced back at her. “Really?”

She shook her head. “Usually, if someone in power gave me something, it was because they expected me to do something terrible for them in return.” She looked out toward the tree line. “I didn’t realize how strange true kindness would feel.”

Kōya kept his eyes on the road. “You will get used to it.”

Lyra offered a fragile smile. “Will I?”

“Probably.”

“And if I don’t?”

“Then we will figure it out.”

Lyra looked at his broad back. “Together?”

Kōya nodded without breaking stride.

“Yeah.”

The answer was casual, thrown over his shoulder. But Lyra felt something settle inside her chest.

Together.

Not owned. Not commanded. Not purchased.

Together.

They continued their march east. As the town disappeared behind them, Lyra pulled one of her magic books from the satchel. She read the first page. Then the second. Then she frowned.

“Kōya.”

“What?”

“I don’t understand this arcane theory.”

He looked over at the open book. “It is basic internal mana circulation.”

“I know that.”

“Then why don’t you understand it?”

“Because the physical application makes no sense.”

Kōya slowed his pace to look at the text.

She pointed at an arcane diagram. “This says the caster should forcefully move raw mana through the central core channel before directing it outward to the focus.”

“Yes.”

“But when I try to do that, it hurts.”

Kōya’s expression became serious. “Show me.”

Lyra stopped walking and held out her free hand, gripping the wooden wand. She focused her intent, gathering a chaotic amount of ambient mana. The clear crystal embedded in her wand began to glow erratically.

Kōya watched the arcane flow. “Don’t forcefully push it.”

“I’m not.”

“You are.”

“I’m not.”

“You are forcing the current.”

Lyra frowned in frustration. “You are annoying when you are right.”

“That is unfortunate for you.”

She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and tried again. This time, she stopped pushing the energy and allowed it to flow naturally through her pathways. The raw mana moved smoothly.

The crystal glowed brighter, casting a warm light. A stable spark of white light appeared above her palm.

Lyra stared at it. “It worked.”

Kōya nodded. “You adjusted the internal flow rate.”

She stared at the spark hovering over her hand. Then, she smiled.

“I did it.”

“Yes.”

“I cast magic.”

“Yes.”

She looked up at him. “Did you see it?”

“I was watching you.”

“I did it!”

“You did.”

Lyra laughed into the cold air.

The fragile light floated above her palm. It wasn’t powerful or impressive. It wouldn’t have frightened even the weakest monster in the borderlands.

Lyra stared at the spark as though she had never seen anything more beautiful.

No one had ordered her to do it or assigned her a purpose. No one had placed a price on it.

She had learned it for herself.

She closed her fingers, and the light disappeared. She looked up at Kōya.

“Again.”

Kōya smiled. “Again.”

They continued their march east into the dark.

Neither knew what waited for them ahead.

But for once in her life, Lyra wasn’t walking toward something terrifying because someone else had decided where she belonged.

She had chosen this road.

And Kōya walked beside her. Not as her master. Not as her owner. Not as a hero expecting repayment.

Just as the person who had opened an iron door, stepped back, and let her decide whether she wanted to walk through it.
