Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child

Drawing a deep breath through her nose, Lyra turned her back on the granite blockhouse and walked back out toward the main avenue.

”The first buyer who leased my paper from that building wasn’t a demon,” she said as Kōya fell into step beside her.

”He owned an alehouse two towns west.”

Kōya watched her profile.

”Sixteen hours a day hauling pewter tankards and scrubbing mutton grease off pine tables,” she said, a faint, crooked smile touching her lips. ”The cook yelled whenever the stew scorched, teamsters complained that the small beer was watered down, and my feet ached every night. In the middle of the dinner rush, with the hearth roaring and men arguing over dice, I could spend an hour pretending I was just a hired girl earning wages.”

Her smile faded as they stepped onto the wider flagstones of the boulevard.

”Then at midnight the owner locked the collar-chain to the kitchen staple,” she said softly. ”You never knew when a broker would walk in during breakfast, pay off the lease, and load you into another cart before you could tie your shoes.”

”Like Zeref’s factor,” Kōya said, his voice dropping an octave.

”Yes.” Lyra’s hand rose to brush the silver stone pendant resting at her throat. ”When they marched our line into Zeref’s hall, he walked right past six stronger workers and stopped in front of me. He stared at my face for two minutes without blinking—as if he were looking at a portrait that had walked out of its frame.”

Yuna. Even a corrupted Demon Peer had recognized the echo in the shape of her eyes and the tilt of her chin.

”He told his steward I reminded him of someone,” Lyra said, glancing up at Kōya’s set jaw. ”At the time, I thought he was mad.”

Kōya looked straight ahead down the crowded street. ”So did I, when I first broke into his keep.”

”It took me a week in his tower to understand that Zeref never saw me at all,” Lyra said, her fingers tightening around her leather satchel strap. ”To him, I was a piece of painted porcelain that looked like a woman he couldn’t reach. And walking down this street today...”

She looked across the boulevard, where a licensed factor in a velvet cap was counting silver coins into a guard’s palm beside a caged dray.

”Back in that alehouse, I thought my life had been ruined by one greedy bailiff and one bad debt,” she said. ”Coming back here with my eyes open, you see the bailiff was only the lowest gear on the wheel. My whole life was just half a line of ink in that granite building back there.”

Kōya looked from the factor’s coin pouch to the marble domes rising at the end of the avenue. Yesterday on the highway, Slane’s slave trade had looked like a display of cruelty; walking beside someone who had passed through its sorting rooms showed the ledger underneath the blood.

Where the boulevard opened into the central banking square, the timber buildings gave way to four-story arcades of white limestone and gilded ironwork. Perfumed noblewomen stepped out of lacquered sedan chairs; armored demon-kin soldiers patrolled the crosswalks in pairs; and every thirty yards, thirty-foot scarlet-and-gold hoardings towered above the colonnades to herald the upcoming market.

Lyra halted before a freestanding notice board framed in polished brass. Unlike the crude wooden placards near the city gates, this board displayed embossed vellum sheets stamped with the wax seals of the territory’s ruling syndicates:

PATRON REGISTRY — THE ANNUAL MEGA SLAVE AUCTION

Featuring: Arena-Tested Combatants, Pure Arcane Lineages, Rare Beastfolk Stock, & Premier Consort Lots.

Reserved Box Seating Confirmed For: The High Houses of the Eastern March, The Consortium of Seven, & Attending Demon Peers.

”Look at the bottom margin,” Lyra murmured.

Kōya stepped closer, reading down the column of aristocratic titles and demonic blood-sigils printed in gold ink. ”They’re publishing a roster of who holds the high boxes.”

”In Slane, having your crest on that board is a mark of credit,” she said.

Kōya studied the four Demon Peer sigils stamped at the top of the vellum. Every noble house and demonic warlord big enough to finance cross-border raids was bragging about their seat numbers three days in advance. Instead of hunting shadows through ten provinces, the men who knew where Mizuki’s caravan had been routed were gathering in a single amphitheater.

He turned his head to look down at Lyra. ”The first time they brought you through this square, what did you think of the people on the boardwalk?”

She looked past the brass frame toward a confectioner’s stall where a clerk in a clean linen shirt was buying sugared almonds for his small son while a chained coffle shuffled past five feet behind his heels.

”I hated every single face on the street,” she said quietly. ”I thought anyone who could live inside these walls had to have a stone where their heart belonged.”

”And looking at them now?”

”Now it scares me worse,” she said. ”That man buying almonds for his boy loves his family. He works ten hours a day at a desk, pays his taxes, and probably winces when a handler uses a whip too close to his window. Yet the syndicates have made the cages such a permanent part of the pavement that decent people step around them the way they step around a puddle of rain.”

Kōya watched the clerk lift his son onto his shoulder and walk away without once turning his head toward the clanking iron. A warlord didn’t need an army of monsters to keep a territory in chains; he only needed to price the bread low enough that ordinary men kept their eyes on the sidewalk.

Beside him, Lyra slid her hand inside the flap of her leather satchel, wrapping her fingers around the smooth ash wood of her wand handle.

”Still keeping it at the top of the bag?” Kōya asked.

”Always.”

”You like the balance?”

A genuine smile broke through the solemn lines around her mouth. ”I do.”

”Even after the brawl we had outside the shop?”

”Especially after that.” She drew her hand back out, resting her palm over the leather flap. ”Every tool or dress I touched for four months was handed to me so I could earn money for someone else. That wand was the first thing anyone ever put in my hands just so I could learn to stand on my own feet.”

She looked back up at the gold-lettered auction roster one last time, her chin high and her dark eyes steady. ”What happened in that granite blockhouse four months ago belongs to my past. It doesn’t get to write the rest of my life.”

”No,” Kōya said evenly. ”It won’t.”

Lyra glanced up at his scarred profile. He didn’t say it like a boast or a comforting lie; he stated it the way he called the distance to a target.

”Come on, then,” she said, turning away from the brass board. ”Let’s see where they’re moving the stock.”

As they merged back into the pedestrian flow heading toward the central exchange, Lyra stole a sideways glance at the tall swordsman matching her stride. No iron band chafed her throat; no bailiff held a lease on her breath; her wand sat against her hip, her new pendant warmed her skin, and the boy walking at her shoulder had never once looked at her like a debt to be collected.

Kōya caught her staring out of the corner of his eye. ”What?”

”Nothing,” she said, facing front with a wide smile.

”That’s the third time since breakfast.”

”What is?”

”Staring at the side of my head and grinning.”

”I was thinking to myself.”

”That usually precedes trouble.”

Her laugh rang out clear and bright between the limestone colonnades, turning the head of a passing guild guard.

Fifty yards ahead, where the grand arcade met the rear loading lanes of the public market, Kōya’s eyes narrowed. Two armed guards wearing unmarked grey surcoats had halted a canvas-topped dray outside a windowless stone depot, checking a wax-sealed scroll before waving four chained prisoners through an iron service door that bore no shop sign at all.

Kōya touched the back of his wrist to Lyra’s elbow, angling their path toward the shadow of the opposite colonnade.

”Look at the grey surcoats by the loading bay,” he murmured.

Lyra’s laughter faded into sharp focus as she tracked the guards closing the iron door behind the cart. ”That isn’t a retail stall.”

”No,” Kōya said, his hand resting near the hilt of the Hero Sword. ”The public market is just the storefront. Let’s find out where the real doors go.”
