Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child

Kōya rolled his stiff right shoulder against the wooden bedrail as an iron-rimmed dray rattled the cobbles three stories below.

Stale coal smoke and frying mutton tallow seeped through the gaps in the garret casement, carried on the morning din of fishmongers shouting prices, territory guards barking at congested carts, and a heavy brass market bell clanging down by the canal. Keeping his half of last night’s treaty had meant balancing on the outer six inches of the narrow mattress for five hours without rolling over once, leaving his right deltoid knotted from hanging over the pine sideboard.

At the foot of the mattress, the straw ticking rustled. Lyra sat perched on the edge of the bed with her back to him, drawing a wooden comb through the tangles in her dark hair.

”Morning,” Lyra said without turning her head.

”Morning.” Kōya pushed himself upright and dug his left thumb into the cramped muscle below his collarbone, eyeing the wobbly three-legged chair in the corner.

Lyra glanced back over her shoulder. ”Still think that stool would have been kinder on your spine than sharing?”

”Definitely.”

Her lips curved upward.

Kōya narrowed his eyes at the wide swath of rumpled blanket covering her two-thirds of the mattress. ”You planned this outcome.”

”I did no such thing.”

”You slept like a log on your side of the line.”

”I was concentrating on staying completely still, Kōya.”

”With eighty percent of the wool.”

She let out a quiet laugh, tied her hair back with a leather cord, and rose from the mattress to cross to the narrow window. Pulling the faded linen curtain back two inches, she looked down into the canyon of the street.

Kōya stood, buckled his sword harness over his coat, and stepped up beside her at the glass.

Morning sun stripped the shadows off Slane’s architecture. Down on the thoroughfare, limestone counting-houses with polished brass plaques shared party walls with dark, unpaved alleys where bent porters hauled timber balks on their backs. Private mercenaries in oiled mail leaned beside the gates of merchant mansions, thirty paces from boarded-up tenements where cobblers and pot-menders worked under leaking awnings.

Weaving through the center of the morning rush walked the licensed brokers, leading fresh lines of collared men and women toward the appraisal yards.

Kōya’s jaw tightened as a handler snapped a short leather crop against his boot to hurry a limping boy across the crosswalk.

Beside his elbow, Lyra went motionless. Her eyes unfocused from the passing carts below, tracking the roofline of a peaked slate warehouse three blocks north while her fingers twisted the dry linen of the curtain into a tight rope.

”Kōya,” she whispered.

”Hm?”

”I know those roofs.”

He turned his head toward her. ”You’ve been in Slane before?”

She gave a slow nod, her knuckles white against the fabric. ”Never on this lane. Down near the outer storehouses, where the wagons unload at night.” She let out a long breath that fogged the cool pane, then opened her fingers and let the curtain fall back into place. ”Let’s go.”

They descended the creaking stairs and stepped out into the street.

Instead of taking his customary vanguard step ahead of her, Kōya matched his stride directly to Lyra’s left shoulder, positioning himself between her and the passing cart traffic. She wore her leather satchel slung cross-body over her wool dress, the polished wooden hilt of her wand tucked inside the flap where her right hand could reach it in a heartbeat. After a week of road dust and campfire smoke, the clothes Kōya had bought her in the northern border town sat naturally on her frame, crease-worn to her own stride.

Halfway down the second block, warm air thick with yeast, browned butter, and wood-fired wheat crust billowed out of an open-fronted bakery.

Lyra’s boots slowed on the flagstones.

Kōya matched her pace. ”Hungry?”

”No.” A small, warm smile touched her mouth as she looked past the wooden counter at the baker sliding long loaves off a wooden peel. ”The smell reminded me of our kitchen.”

Kōya stayed quiet, giving the memory room.

”My father used to stop by the village ovens every morning on his way back from the timber yard,” Lyra said, her eyes crinkling as she watched the steam curl off the stacked bread. ”He would walk through the door swearing he had bought a big enough loaf to last the two of us until supper.”

”And did it?” Kōya asked.

”Never once.”

”So he lied to you.”

”Shamelessly.” Her laugh came out light and clear over the rattle of a passing handcart. ”By the time he walked the quarter-mile from the baker’s oven to our porch, the entire top crust and half the center were already gone.”

”Sounds like a practical man.”

”He called it testing the baker’s salt.”

Kōya’s mouth twitched upward. ”Your father had good instincts.”

”The best.”

For fifty paces down the sunlit boardwalk, ten years dropped off Lyra’s shoulders. Walking past the shop awnings with the smell of baked wheat in the air, she was a carpenter’s daughter from a quiet valley talking about her dad on a Tuesday morning.

”We never had spare silver in the jar,” she said, glancing at a jeweler’s velvet window display before looking back down the lane. ”Every winter meant patching the roof shingles ourselves and salting down cabbage. Yet we had dry boots, hot soup in the pot, and firewood stacked to the eaves. Until the bailiffs came after his accident, I never once thought of our house as poor.”

”Did you have many friends in the village?” Kōya asked.

”Two or three near the mill.” She shrugged one shoulder. ”I wasn’t the girl everyone crowded around at the well.”

”I find that hard to believe.”

”Why?”

”Because you never stop talking.”

Lyra planted her boots on the flagstones and stared at his back. Kōya kept walking at an even pace without looking around.

”I do not talk too much, Kōya.”

”You’ve been awake forty minutes and insulted my posture and my character twice.”

”Pointing out that you hogged the bedrail is an observation.”

”Sounded like an insult from my side of the room.”

Folding her arms across her ribs, she hurried three steps to catch up with his elbow. Kōya kept his eyes on the ahead traffic, letting the small warmth sit between them until the lane hooked left into an older commercial court.

Lyra stopped dead at the corner curb.

Fifty yards down the narrow cobblestone chute stood a windowless, three-story blockhouse built of grey granite ashlar. Heavy iron straps reinforced the double oak loading doors, and a blank, unlettered iron shield dangled from a chain above the keystone. No merchant banners dressed the facade, and no hawkers cried wares from the steps.

Lyra stared at the iron-strapped doors with all the blood drained from her face.

”I know that archway.”

Kōya halted beside her, his right hand settling onto the Hero Sword’s pommel as he scanned the roofline and the shadowed alleyways flanking the blockhouse. ”What is it?”

”I don’t...” She pressed two trembling fingers hard against her left temple, her breath catching in her throat. ”Give me a second.”

Behind her closed eyelids, the sunny morning street vanished into pouring autumn rain.

Six months ago, she had walked down a muddy country lane beside her father’s cart with clean hands and an unbruised neck, listening to him complain about the price of iron nails. Then four men in oiled leather coats had stepped out from behind the tollhouse barrier with stamped debt-writs and leaded clubs.

Rough fingers had twisted into her wrists; a heavy club had cracked against her father’s skull when he lunged forward with a wagon spoke; his voice had torn raw through the rain, screaming her name as the covered dray swallowed her in pitch darkness. For three days and nights the wagon had jolted over stone ruts until the doors swung open inside a grey granite courtyard smelling of damp straw, lye, and iron chains—right behind those iron-strapped oak doors at the end of the lane.

Kōya stepped half a pace to his left, putting his broad shoulder squarely between Lyra’s sightline and the granite blockhouse. ”Lyra.”

She blinked rapidly against the daylight, her chest rising in short, shallow pulls. ”I’m all right.”

”Your hands are shaking.”

”I remembered where the wagon stopped.”

He stayed planted in front of her, shielding her from the street traffic until her breathing slowed.

For the first two weeks after those oak doors closed behind her, she had sat in the straw by the holding grate, convinced that the magistrate would discover the clerk’s error before sundown, or that her father would walk through the gate with the village constable to bring her home. Every time a key turned in the iron lock, she had lifted her head.

And every time, a stranger with a ledger had walked in instead.

”They brought our cart into that courtyard four months ago,” Lyra said quietly, her eyes fixed on the wool of Kōya’s coat lapel.

Kōya knew the rough outline from Zeref’s fortress, and he stayed quiet so she could lay the rest of it down.

”My father was lying in the mud with his head split open when they locked the tailgate,” she said, her voice flat and steady. ”Even so, every morning when the handlers brought the water buckets, I told myself he was on the road behind us. Every single day for a month.”

Kōya’s fingers curled tight around his scabbard throat.

”He never came through the gate,” Lyra said, looking past Kōya’s shoulder into the empty gutter. ”A carpenter with a broken head and thirty silvers of debt doesn’t get past Slane’s tollbooths.”

Not a trace of bitterness colored her tone.

She stated the math the way a clerk read off a weight scale, and that quiet acceptance hit harder than tears.
