The Comeback of the Cannon-Fodder Supporting Actress

Zhong Liumei thought she had a grasp on Anning. She knew that rural areas here held many traditions, and many ancient customs were still followed. If the Xiao Family didn’t go to the Pei Family to propose, and nothing was prepared at home, and the elders didn’t step in, if Anning and Xiao Yuan got married, it wouldn’t be proper and would be a lifelong criticism.

No matter how capable Anning was or how much money she made, she wouldn’t have any dignity.

However, she and Xiao Daguang weren’t particularly smart, yet they were self-righteous.

They thought they could compete with Anning. Even if they were tied together, ten or twenty of them couldn’t compete with Anning.

Xiao Yuan returned home in the morning, and by evening, Anning brought things to Xiao Erguang’s house.

Xiao Erguang and his wife Du Chunzhi had just returned from work, and before they could sit down, Anning arrived.

Seeing Anning, Du Chunzhi immediately smiled and welcomed her: ”Why did you come? I mean, it’s so cold outside. If you had something to say, couldn’t you have had Xiao Bo deliver the message? Why come personally?”

Xiao Erguang also smiled: ”Quickly, come inside, warm up in the house.”

Anning entered the house with a smile.

Du Chunzhi gave Anning some seeds and poured her some tea: ”Have you eaten? If not, eat here at home.”

Anning waved her hand: ”Auntie, don’t worry. Sit down, I have something to tell you.”

Du Chunzhi sat down.

Looking at Du Chunzhi, Anning’s eyes suddenly became red. She lowered her head and wiped away her tears, forcing a smile: ”Xiao Yuan and I are planning to get married.”

Getting married is a happy occasion. Upon hearing this, Du Chunzhi and Xiao Erguang immediately rejoiced, but seeing Anning’s expression, they both became tense again.

Du Chunzhi quickly asked: ”What’s wrong? Did you fight with Yuanzi? If he did something wrong, tell me, and I’ll scold him for you.”

Anning shook her head: ”No, Xiao Yuan and I are fine.”

At this point, she couldn’t control herself and started crying: ”Uncle, Auntie, this morning Xiao Yuan returned home to mention the wedding. It’s a happy matter, he just wanted to tell my uncle and aunt to make them happy, besides we’re young and inexperienced, wouldn’t we need the elders to step in, but...”

As Anning wiped her tears, she continued: ”My uncle and aunt said they wouldn’t deal with it, letting us organize the wedding ourselves.”

As Anning said this, Xiao Erguang wanted to slam the table.

He was furious.

Du Chunzhi also felt this wasn’t right.

”Since Xiao Yuan returned, he hasn’t eaten, he’s still in the room and hasn’t come out. I tried comforting him, but he’s genuinely sad now, and considering unreasonable thoughts. Uncle, Auntie, when my elder brother and second brother had weddings, our parents eagerly planned for them to get daughter-in-laws. Why is it when it’s me and Xiao Yuan, they say such heartless things? We’re not asking for bride price, or money for the banquet, but for a wedding, Xiao family’s elders don’t step in, what kind of wedding is it?”

Saying this, Anning cried again, collapsing into Du Chunzhi’s arms: ”Xiao Yuan is truly heartbroken this time. When I saw him like that, I felt so bad, I’m not embarrassed or reluctant to let people know, so I came to talk to you. This matter... truly has nowhere to be discussed. If my uncle and aunt truly disregard Xiao Yuan as their son, and don’t care about him, my family cherishes him. We don’t have sons, let Xiao Yuan live with us, and our children will carry the Pei surname. The wedding can be held in Xiaxi Village and the banquet can be at our home. Uncle and Auntie, do remember to come over to drink at the celebratory banquet.”

”Don’t cry anymore.”

Du Chunzhi felt a pang in her heart and quickly consoled Anning: ”What your elder brother and sister-in-law did was wrong. It’s no wonder you feel hurt and angry; listening to this, I can’t help but feel upset. Good child, don’t worry, your Uncle and Auntie will stand up for you. We’ll go over and talk to them, if they really don’t organize the wedding, Xiao Yuan is a child of the Old Xiao Family, we are his own uncle and auntie, when the time comes, we’ll arrange the banquet, we’ll invite the matchmaker over, we’ll discuss the wedding with your parents, does that sound good?”

Du Chunzhi coaxed Anning with gentle words, and only after crying for a while did Anning stop: ”Actually, it’s improper to trouble you, Uncle and Auntie, but we’re truly at the end of our rope. Growing up, I’ve never seen a family marry off a daughter without elders stepping up. To say, letting us two kids handle the banquet by ourselves is really unreasonable. Auntie, you don’t know, when Xiao Yuan returned home and told me this, I even thought about breaking up with him. I, Pei Anning, have looks, capabilities, and money. What kind of guy can’t I find? If I just put out the word, not to brag, there are guys who want to marry me who can line up from my house to the town... But seeing Xiao Yuan so hurt, my heart aches for him. We’ve been together for so long and never had a disagreement; we’ve always discussed things together. This issue isn’t his fault, I can’t break up with him just because I’m afraid of trouble.”

Talking about breaking up made Xiao Erguang and Du Chunzhi anxious.

Xiao Bo still works with Anning, and the factory and stuff all belong to the Pei family’s businesses, Xiao Yuan has no share in them. If Anning and Xiao Yuan really broke up, Xiao Bo’s job would be gone.

At this moment, Du Chunzhi even thought about venting on Zhong Liumei.

You say, where can you find a good daughter-in-law like Anning? That’s the kind of treasure you can’t even find with a lantern.

If Xiao Bo brought home a daughter-in-law like her, she’d hold her up every day. But Zhong Liumei knows no satisfaction, always putting up a face, truly not knowing what’s good for her.

”Don’t say things in anger.”

Xiao Erguang urgently consoled Anning: ”I know about this matter, don’t worry, I will ensure there’s justice for your wedding, it’ll be grand and dignified.”

”Yes, yes, with us around, don’t worry about it. Go back and tell Xiao Yuan that he shouldn’t be sad, let’s do what we need to do. His parents are confused, but the Xiao family still has elders here, we are rational, besides, Xiao Yuan still has a Sixth Grandpa alive. That’s someone who’s been astute all his life, with him around, things won’t go wrong.”

Anning finally smiled: ”It’s really embarrassing, bothering you. Give my regards to Sixth Grandpa for me. When Xiao Yuan and I get married, we’ll certainly toast him a few glasses.”

”That’s for sure.” Du Chunzhi smiled as well: ”Alright, sit down, I’ll cook.”

Anning stood up: ”No, Auntie, don’t worry. I just came over to talk now that I feel better, I have quite a few things at home, I’ll leave first.”

She left the house and quickly turned back: ”Uncle, Auntie, don’t come out, it’s cold outside, look at this chilly wind, quickly go back inside.”

No way Xiao Erguang and Du Chunzhi wouldn’t escort her, they accompanied Anning all the way to the door, watching her ride off on her motorcycle before returning indoors.

Once inside, Du Chunzhi’s face dropped: ”Do you think your brother and sister-in-law are stupid?”

What could Xiao Erguang say: ”Don’t talk about this now, quickly tidy up, let’s go find Sixth Uncle.”

Xiao Erguang and Du Chunzhi went to find Sixth Uncle.

Sixth Uncle was high in rank, but actually not that old, he’s only in his fifties, body still robust.

Upon hearing Xiao Erguang talk about Xiao Yuan’s matter, he immediately furrowed his brows: ”Come, let’s go over there, I want to ask what Xiao Daguang has in his head, is it full of crap?”
