The Comeback of the Cannon-Fodder Supporting Actress

An Yi raised her eyebrows and chuckled, ”You should understand why I came here. It’s not to compete in beauty; I’m here to find a good man. Yesterday’s outfit was too aggressive. Just arriving in a new environment, if I dress too beautifully, I’ll lose many opportunities. For example, if I’m too pretty, some female classmates may not want to hang out with me, and some male classmates might feel a distance. Also, those clothes I wear can easily reveal to discerning eyes that my family background must be particularly good, inevitably attracting people with ulterior motives. It’s unnecessary trouble.”

It must be said, An Yi thought it through correctly.

”What’s there to be afraid of?”

Pei Yu twirled a strand of hair and laughed somewhat wantonly, ”It’s all for fun; if a man clings to you, and he looks good, you might as well play around until you’re tired of it, and then kick him aside. The most important thing is your own happiness.”

An Yi sneered, ”You think I’m like you? I’m not about to subsidize a man. I want to snag a golden bachelor.”

Pei Yu looked An Yi up and down again, ”With this Cinderella getup, what good can you catch?”

An Yi glared at Pei Yu, ”You don’t understand. The male classmates at school prefer this pure and innocent type. Not just at school, even those big bosses like this type. They seem obedient and simple-minded, easy to deceive. Besides, when you just arrive in a place and don’t yet understand the situation, showing weakness is the best strategy.”

”Alright, you’re right.” Pei Yu didn’t like arguing with An Yi and simply complimented her with a smile, ”Then I wish you great success.”

An Yi smiled as she walked out, and at the door, she turned back to Pei Yu and asked, ”Did you come to the Capital to find an opportunity to act in TV shows because there are many handsome men in the film industry?”

Pei Yu’s eyes squinted with a smile, ”Naturally. I’m familiar with the singers in Dream City, and none of them catch my eye. I had to come to the Capital to try my luck. Anyway, I have loads of money now. If those two plots are developed, do you know how many buildings and shops I’d have? I probably won’t worry about money in my lifetime, so naturally, I’ll follow my heart.”

”You’re impressive.” An Yi gave a thumbs-up, then laughed and went out.

They lived in a hotel quite close to the university, so An Yi didn’t call for a cab. She left the hotel with her luggage and headed to the school.

She deliberately swapped her suitcase for a snake-skin bag, appearing a bit embarrassed at the university entrance.

There were senior students welcoming newcomers, and seeing An Yi, they quickly came over to help her with the registration and such.

An Yi registered, paid her tuition, got her dormitory key, and a senior helped carry her luggage to the dorm.

On the way, the senior asked her, ”Did you come alone?”

An Yi smiled slightly, ”Yes, my family is busy; there’s a lot of work on the farm. My parents can’t leave it. My eldest sister has never left home, worse than me. My second sister just had a baby, and my little sister is busy raising chickens and pigs, so she can’t get away.”

She seemed to be without any pretense, spilling everything when asked.

The senior smiled, and at the dormitory entrance, he kindly reminded her, ”There’s a place to buy stuff at school; if you need anything, you can go there. Also... if you face any difficulty, remember to ask your classmates for help. By the way, I’ll tell you my name and dormitory; if you’re in real trouble, you can ask for my help.”

An Yi quickly thanked the senior and told him her name and such.

After the senior left, she opened the dormitory door and went inside.

She arrived early, and when she got there, the dorm was still empty. An Yi started cleaning the beds and desks, then began arranging her bed and organizing her cabinet and such.

She got her things sorted out before the other dorm members gradually arrived.

Once everyone got settled, they sat together to chat and get to know each other.

Then, during introductions, when it was An Yi’s turn, she smiled softly, ”My name is Pei Anyi, I’m from XX Province, my family is from the countryside; our village is called Xiaxi Village, and it’s quite pretty.”

”That must be quite tough for you.” A girl on the upper bunk looked at An Yi with a trace of sympathy in her eyes, ”I’ve heard that in most rural areas, boys are favored over girls, you must’ve had a hard time studying.”

An Yi smiled good-naturedly, ”I didn’t have it hard; it was my parents and sisters who had it tough, especially my youngest sister. When she was in school, her grades were outstanding, always first in the year. But during the entrance exams, she fell ill and didn’t do well. Later, with no money at home, she gave up on retaking the year.”

”What about you?”

Another girl was quite curious, ”Your sister is younger than you, how come you’re still studying?”

An Yi sighed, ”I originally wasn’t going to study anymore, but our family only has us four sisters, no boys, so we were often bullied. After my sister came home, to bring some pride to our family, she borrowed money and bought chickens and ducks to raise. Then, she managed to earn some money and let me retake the exams, saying I would bring pride if I got into college, making our family more respected. I initially thought about raising chickens and ducks, but I’m terrible at it compared to my sister’s skill, so it had to be my sister staying at home farming and raising chickens and pigs; I got into college, and my whole family was thrilled. My sister sold many pigs and chickens to gather my tuition.”

After she said this, the other girls felt she was genuinely resilient; seeing she shared openly without hesitation and was gentle-tempered and not self-conscious, their impression of her improved.

An Yi sat for a while and mentioned not having a thermos, planning to go buy one, along with some daily necessities, asking if anyone wanted to go with her.

Everyone indicated for her to go first, while they rested a bit more.

After An Yi left, those girls gathered to discuss.

”Let’s try to help An Yi more moving forward; she’s quite struggling.”

”Yes, let’s be more frugal, if we go out together to shop or eat, avoid picking expensive places, wouldn’t want her to feel uncomfortable.”

”Support her more in daily life, pay close attention, and if we notice she’s facing any difficulty, we should work together to solve it.”
