The Comeback of the Cannon-Fodder Supporting Actress

Sun Jinhua came in with a basket of eggs and saw Yang Laoer smoking gloomily in the living room: ”What’s up? Did the Pei Family say something unpleasant?”

Upon hearing this, Yang Baotian rolled up his sleeves and was about to head out: ”I’m going to find the Pei Family and ask them on what grounds they’re saying unpleasant things.”

Yang Laoer pounded the table: ”Stop, who told you to go.”

Yang Baolin pulled Yang Baotian back: ”Brother, sit down.”

Once Yang Baotian was seated, Yang Laoer said, ”The Pei Family didn’t say anything unpleasant. They spoke very kindly, even insisted I stay for a meal. They said they wanted Mr. Pei’s son-in-law to drink with me. As soon as Anning heard me say that our vegetables weren’t bearing fruit, she couldn’t even bother to eat and went to the field with me. In the cold weather, the road was difficult to walk, and it was Anning who supported me back.”

Everyone in the Yang Family was stunned upon hearing this.

No one expected the Pei Family not only to hold no grudges but to be so magnanimous, without a hint of blame. On the contrary, they were so enthusiastic. What’s this? It’s returning good for evil, leaving people speechless.

Yang Baolin mumbled softly, ”Anning was always kind. Even during school times, she loved to help classmates.”

Yang Baozhu, sitting beside Yang Baolin, turned to look at him: ”Third Brother, are you still thinking about Anning?”

Yang Baolin’s face turned red instantly, unable to speak for a long time.

Sun Jinhua collapsed onto a chair, covering her face with one hand: ”What should I say... what should I say?”

On the contrary, Fan Zhili was most concerned about the family’s vegetables: ”Dad, what did Anning say? Why aren’t our vegetables bearing fruit?”

Yang Laoer took several more drags on his cigarette: ”The reason is that we don’t have artificial pollination. What time of year is it to grow vegetables in open fields—spring and summer—when there are bees and butterflies for pollination? But we are growing greenhouse vegetables, in the dead of winter, there are no bees to pollinate, and we don’t have artificial pollination. You know this... it’s like a couple not sleeping together, how can a child be born?”

With that, the whole family understood.

Sun Jinhua’s face instantly turned pale.

Yang Laoer continued: ”Anning said she didn’t know at first; later, she bought many books for self-study. When she was in Dream City, she even went to the agricultural university to consult a professor and understood all about greenhouse vegetables. Only then did she dare to grow vegetables. She didn’t know how much preparation was done before planting.”

At this point, Yang Baozhu’s face turned unpleasant.

Yang Laoer slapped his own face: ”In front of Anning, my old face is burning... You say, at my age, I can’t even measure up to a child. In our whole family, not one thought ahead, just decided to grow vegetables without reading a single book. No wonder, Anning even blamed me, saying why didn’t I seek her help earlier when the vegetables weren’t bearing fruit. If I asked earlier, she could’ve helped with artificial pollination. Although it might still have delayed the farming season, it would’ve definitely borne fruit. It might not have made much money, but it wouldn’t have been a loss. Now the time is missed, and the flowers are about to wilt, it’ll definitely fail this year.”

After Yang Laoer finished speaking, Sun Jinhua slumped completely.

Fan Zhili felt full of resentment, she bit her lip, and after a while, began to point at Yang Baozhu and curse: ”It’s all your fault, you always call someone a jinx, but I think you’re the jinx. You don’t know anything and made us plant greenhouse vegetables. Anning knows to read books, knows to ask teachers. You’re a high school graduate, why don’t you know to buy some books and read? Why don’t you know to ask teachers at school? Now it’s all ruined, everything at home is gone because of you, you wretched girl, jinx, ungrateful wretch! Life is unlivable.”

”What did you say?”

Hearing this scolding, Yang Baozhu wouldn’t have it.

She sprang up, so angry that without thinking, she picked up a chair to smash at Fan Zhili: ”Say that again and see if I don’t smack you to pieces.”

Yang Baotian, who had been sitting to the side, saw Yang Baozhu about to attack his wife, quickly stood up and grabbed the chair from her hand: ”What are you doing? That’s your sister-in-law, try hitting her.”

Yang Baozhu saw Yang Baotian taking Fan Zhili’s side, and she nearly went mad.

She rushed over, hitting Yang Baotian: ”You’re my brother, how can you side with her? Didn’t you hear her curse at me? If you’re still my brother, hit her, beat her to death.”

Fan Zhili felt wronged too, listening to Yang Baozhu repeatedly telling Yang Baotian to hit her, she wouldn’t take it lying down.

She was no pushover, wouldn’t stand for such affronts.

Fan Zhili quickly got up and ran outside, before anyone could react, she was already outside the Yangs’ door.

In the dead of night, Fan Zhili wailed and cried out loud.

”Life is unlivable, the Yang Family is bullying me, a whole family wants to hit me, the outsider, what right do they have? Everyone come and see, Yang Baozhu, that jinx, is inciting her brother to hit his sister-in-law. Someone help, life is unlivable!”

At the Pei Family, they had just finished dinner, the family sitting cozily in the living room chatting, suddenly hearing such shouting, and they were quite startled.

”What’s Yang Family’s daughter-in-law yelling about?”

Liu Dalian frowned and said.

An Xian sipped her tea: ”Who knows, their house has been restless for some time now.”

Anning stood up: ”I’ll go take a look.”

Anjing wanted to follow: ”I’ll go too.”

Chen Qiang pulled Anjing back: ”Little ancestor, settle down. Why go out in such cold weather?”

”I’ll go see then.” Liu Dalian put down her sunflower seeds and walked out.

Anning grabbed two coats and followed.

Xiao Yuan also took a coat, put it on, and headed out.

The three of them came out of the Pei Family and saw not far away, lights were on in several houses, with people peeking out and looking this way.

Anning immediately saw Fan Zhili crying and wailing, as well as Yang Baotian, who came out and was trying to say something.

”Sister-in-law, what are you doing?”

Anning went over to support Fan Zhili: ”Crying and wailing like this in the cold, be careful you catch a chill, if you got sick, wouldn’t it be yourself who suffers? Who could take your place then?”

Anning’s persuasion didn’t matter; once she did, Fan Zhili cried even harder: ”Who cares about me, in this family they’d rather I died. My mother-in-law only cares about her daughter, doesn’t care about me or the head of our house. I guess she’s waiting for her daughter to take care of her old age, carry her up the mountain. If that’s really the case, then fine, let’s write an agreement, we won’t care about anything in the future.”

”That’s not the case.”

Anning gently coaxed: ”Which family doesn’t rely on their sons for old age care and funeral arrangements? Sister-in-law, your words are unreasonable. You’re the eldest daughter-in-law. How can you not take care of the elders? Your family is not ours. My family has no sons, my parents can only rely on four daughters. Your family has three brothers, how can a daughter be expected to take care of old age, that’s nothing but a joke.”

Liu Dalian also said: ”Yes, there’s no such logic. If you have issues, speak up, everyone will help you resolve them. If not, better hurry indoors for warmth. In this cold, if you really get sick, who will suffer for you?”

Yang Baotian anxiously supported Fan Zhili: ”Li, listen to Auntie’s advice, let’s go back quickly; don’t catch a cold.”
