Rebirth: A Cinderella's Counterattack

Chapter 308: Chapter 290: Coincidence?

Because of Chang Xi’s health, Wei Guang still took the two of them back to the military camp, directly to the barracks.

Such a place, even men were reluctant to come to, let alone women? Even the medics were male, but rumor had it new people were coming, and one of them was a woman. Inside the barracks, there were four bunk beds, but since there were only two people, there was no need to fuss, so both chose the lower bunks—Luo Qianqian chose the one on the right by the window, and Chang Xi chose the one on the left by the window; neither chose the position near the door. After organizing their belongings, Chang Xi covered her head and began to sleep, while Luo Qianqian also lay down but couldn’t fall asleep. Watching the soldiers training outside, Luo Qianqian felt a bit excited inside; this was her first step toward her brother.

”Hey, Xiao Ming, Sister and the others have arrived,” Wei Guang said leisurely on the phone. Even if he hadn’t gone out to shop and wander around, he was off today and naturally wouldn’t go train on his initiative. Instead, he ran to the office to call Wei Ming.

”Mhm, okay, I got it. Don’t go easy on them,” Wei Ming said cheerily, putting down his pen and looking at the white wall overhead: ”Whether it’s Sister or the young girl, they have their own goals.”

Wei Guang rolled his eyes. Did he need you to say that? Didn’t he already know? He had loathed his sister’s fat for a long time, okay? ”I know. By the way, when are you going to send me some more food? Here, we have fewer fruits, fewer vegetables; what we can eat is just cabbage, radishes, potatoes, on repeat every day.”

”What you have is considered pretty good,” Wei Ming snorted coldly. ”Mom’s gone out again. Recently, I’ve been eating in the canteen, spinach for three days straight, three days.”

”You’re not unable to eat anything else; what you’re doing is just showing off, you know that?” Wei Guang looked at the beef jerky Luo Qianqian had given him and asked after a while: ”Xiao Ming, where do you think that Luo family kid could be?”

Upon hearing this, Wei Ming also got serious: ”You’d better not bring it up. The Luo family has practically turned the Capital City upside down, and now whenever the Luo and Han families meet, they inevitably get into an argument.”

”Heh...” Wei Guang sneered. ”If they knew this little girl was gone too...”

”Don’t go looking for trouble. The little girl’s beau is helping us keep it a secret. I don’t know how long we can keep it under wraps, but I guess the Luo family is relieved she’s not calling right now; otherwise, they wouldn’t be able to explain,” Wei Ming sighed.

”So that means there shouldn’t be a problem before winter vacation, right?” Wei Guang raised an eyebrow: ”Got it. Give my regards to Grandpa for me.” With that, Wei Guang hung up the phone, his gaze profound: ”Half a year, huh?”

When Luo Qianqian woke up, Chang Xi was still sleeping, deeply and sweetly, but the knock on the door forced her to become alert. Noting that her clothes were still proper, she hurriedly opened the door, only to see the woman who had lain on top of Chang Xi on the train, standing there looking rather lively: ”Hello, I’m the new medic, my name is Fang Rou. This is the female dormitory, right?”

Luo Qianqian nodded: ”Hello, please come in. I’m Ye Meng.”

”What a coincidence,” Fang Rou said, looking at Luo Qianqian and the still-slumbering Chang Xi, her smile sweet: ”If I had known we were headed to the same destination, we could have traveled together.”

Luo Qianqian chuckled but did not reply; such a coincidence instead made her somewhat fearful. She gently shook Chang Xi: ”Sister Xi, Sister Xi.”

Chang Xi, groggy, opened her eyes to see two figures in front of her bed. Startled, she became fully awake and clutched Luo Qianqian: ”Who is she?” She looked at Fang Rou warily while also checking to see if Luo Qianqian was injured, her face full of concern.

Luo Qianqian patted Chang Xi’s hand, whispering: ”She’s Fang Rou, the medic, and she’s in the same dormitory as us.”

However, Chang Xi stared intently at Fang Rou, feeling that there was something not so simple about this woman.

”The previous medic was a man, and I can’t live with a man, so it’s perfect that you two arrived, and there’s also a vacant spot. That’s why I was assigned here,” said Fang Rou with a look of innocence.

Luo Qianqian tugged at Chang Xi’s hand: ”You’ve slept all afternoon, it’s time to eat something, then come back and continue sleeping. Otherwise, what time do you want to get up tomorrow? Three or four o’clock?” She said with a coquettish tone, and Chang Xi nodded.

”I’m getting pretty hungry too, let’s go find Xiao Guang first,” Chang Xi quickly tidied up her bedding, and luckily she didn’t bring out much. With the luggage still locked, it would be easy to organize the closet upon returning. All she needed was to ask Wei Guang for two padlocks.

Luo Qianqian hesitated as she looked toward Fang Rou, unsure whether to invite her along or not.

Fang Rou waved her hand dismissively, ”You guys go ahead, I’ve already eaten. Now I need to sort out my bed.” She had chosen the lower bunk next to the door, adjacent to Luo Qianqian.

Chang Xi nodded, took Luo Qianqian by the hand, and they left the dorm. Regarding the person they didn’t yet know, there was no need to stand on ceremony, ”Why bother with her? She’s a stranger, and we don’t know her,” Chang Xi started lecturing Luo Qianqian the moment they stepped out the door.

Luo Qianqian was tongue-tied, not wanting to reveal that Chang Xi had put on an act during their first encounter to build rapport.

”Sister, I was just about to come and call you,” Wei Guang hesitated at the doorway, holding two shiny stainless steel lunch boxes.

The dorm building was two-story, and Luo Qianqian and Chang Xi were at the very end of the second floor. Although it was far from the other dorms, Wei Guang had fitted it with an iron door, grandly declaring it ’female territory, no entry for males.’ Nevertheless, he still hesitated to casually venture up, even though it was him.

”Did you know we’ve got one more person in our dorm?” Chang Xi asked bluntly.

”Yeah, the sanitation worker, right? She should have got here earlier. I don’t know why she’s dragging her feet. It’s definitely a woman, isn’t it? Not a transvestite or something?” Wei Guang shrugged, ”What was dad thinking, dumping me in this godforsaken place? I haven’t seen a girl in ages. Even a sow could pass as a beauty with clear brows and alluring eyes, as if she’s the belle of the pig world. Doesn’t he want grandchildren anymore?”

”It’s not like Xiao Ming is giving grandpa any hope of grandchildren by being in such a place either,” Chang Xi hit back mercilessly, ”Besides, isn’t there a girl now?”

”You? Too fat, no appeal. Xiao Meng? Too young, that would be illegal. The sanitation worker? Sharp-faced and shrewish, doesn’t seem like a good person,” Wei Guang sighed, ”Looks like dad sending you here means giving up on grandchildren and trying to get you to lose weight for great-grandchildren instead.”

”Are you asking for a beating?” Chang Xi clenched her fists, glaring fiercely at Wei Guang.

”But seriously, sis, you didn’t like anyone back home, and the same goes for here. I can’t stand any of them,” Wei Guang said with a look of dislike.

”What difference does it make if you like them?” Luo Qianqian curled her lip, what are you going to do, pick up the soap? Do you believe Uncle Wei and Grandpa Wei wouldn’t beat you silly until even your mom wouldn’t recognize you?

”Yeah, what’s it to you if you fancy someone? Think you’ll marry her and bring her home? Dad would kill you,” Chang Xi rolled her eyes and looked ahead at the building, ”Don’t tell me that little bungalow is the canteen?”

”What else?” Wei Guang looked utterly helpless, ”Don’t expect too much of this place, okay? You haven’t even seen the food yet—if you did, you’d go crazy.”

”It’s fine, Sister Xi is here to endure hardship,” Luo Qianqian covered her mouth with a half-smile, ”The harsher the conditions, the better.”

Chang Xi looked utterly annoyed, ”But that doesn’t mean I have to survive on cabbage every day, does it?”

Wei Guang fell silent, with no reply.
