King of the Wilderness

Chapter 313: Chapter 207: Spear and Hunting Plan (Illustrated, Must-Read) (Part 2)

He pointed at the fish skeleton that resembled the skeletal remains of some prehistoric creature, ”Look, guys, this is another benefit of ’filleting to the bone.’ All the organs remain intact inside the abdominal cavity, so it’s like a ’natural refrigerator box’.”

”I don’t need to deal with them right away. I can wait until after I’ve finished eating before leisurely proceeding with the next step of ’organ harvesting’ and decomposition.”

He knocked on the fish head, producing a dull sound akin to striking a stone.

”Listen to that sound. Its core is still frozen solid. I estimate it’ll take at least another hour before it’s completely thawed enough to handle. And in that time, it’s just enough for me to reward myself.”

Lin Yu’an cut a few strips from the thick, fatty fish skin he’d just removed and threw them into the already heated iron pot.

The fish skin quickly curled under the high heat, and the residual fat layer beneath began to melt, emitting a sizzling sound.

An aroma richer and more charred than just frying fat began to permeate the shelter, a scent of fish oil.

”Using fish skin to render oil is one of the most efficient methods. The fish skin itself prevents the fat from burning too quickly under high heat, and the oil obtained is clearer. Plus, the leftover crispy fried fish skin is a little snack in itself.”

While waiting for the oil to render, he didn’t spend time planning defensive traps, but instead returned the polished Hunting Arrows to the quiver.

”Alright, the ranged weapons are ready.” He addressed the camera, his expression calm and serious.

Then, he walked to the tool pile, selecting a sturdy birch rod from which he’d previously gathered for building materials.

”Facing an opponent like a Wolf, I must prepare for close combat. A bow and Arrow are useful at long range, but we still need a weapon that can maintain a safe distance for melee combat.”

From a tool bag wrapped in birch bark, he carefully took out a semi-finished product, a Flint Dagger already shaped into a preliminary form.

”Flint.” He showed the stone to the camera, the fracture surface reflecting a glass-like sheen under the firelight.

”I found this earlier by the riverbed. It’s extremely hard with an internal structure like glass. I initially intended to craft it into a dagger.”

”But plans need to change now. It needs to be upgraded into a spear tip, allowing me crucial safe distance in a fight with Wolves.”

He sat cross-legged, placing a thick Deer Hide on his left palm, found a hammer stone, and carefully held the flint in hand.

With his right hand gripping the smooth hammer stone, he sharply applied force at a precise angle, striking the edge of the flint quickly and powerfully!

”Clang!”

A crisp sound like pottery shattering echoed! A palm-sized thin stone flake chipped off from the flint core.

”Clang! Clang! Clang!”

With each precise strike, more stone flakes fell off. Lin Yu’an’s actions were filled with anticipation, with each strike’s position, strength, and angle meticulously calculated.

He wasn’t randomly smashing but using controlled violence to ”sculpt” this stubborn stone.

Soon, the previously irregular flint morphed in his hands into a roughly symmetrical, spearhead-shaped diamond form.

Lin Yu’an held the prototype up to the camera, ”Now it’s roughly carved, having a basic shape, but it’s not sharp enough nor neat. Next is the more refined work, pressure flaking.”

Putting down the hammer stone, he picked up one of his most prized tools in the bag, a piece of antler.

”I found this gem weeks ago in the forest.” He showed the hard antler to the camera.

”It’s likely a naturally shed piece from reindeer. The hardness and toughness of antlers make them the most perfect soft hammers and pressure flaking tools in nature, able to perfectly focus pressure on the edges of stone tools.”

Then, he pressed the edge of the spearhead prototype firmly against the thick leather-cushioned palm and used the sharp antler piece, pressing forcefully along the spearhead edge with focused downward pressure.

”Pop!”

A faint, almost imperceptible sound, and a crescent-shaped, fingernail-sized, thin stone chip was precisely ”popped” off.

He adjusted his position and applied pressure again.

”Pop! Pop! Pop!”

Lin Yu’an, like a top-tier diamond cutter, used this primitive yet exquisite method to meticulously refine the outline of the spearhead, creating an edge as regular and sharp as serrated teeth.

This process was incredibly demanding, his eyes fixated on every contact point between the spear tip and antler. Each application of pressure merged all his focus and strength control.

Finally, after the last flake was removed, a perfect, willow-leaf-shaped flint spearhead was born in his hand.

It was about ten centimeters long, covered in beautiful, shell-patterned ripples, with its edges glinting a dangerous and icy cold light under the fire, sharp enough to easily cut through the toughest animal hide.

”Done.” Lin Yu’an admired his creation with satisfaction, then began the final assembly.

He picked up the birch rod he’d prepared beforehand, using the tip of the Hunting Knife to carefully carve a groove about five centimeters deep at the end of the rod.
