This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

The development of a hospital and its departments does not happen overnight.

Since a rumor is now circulating within the hospital, it suggests a merger is likely, and layoffs might not be necessary.

What’s needed now is everyone’s attitude.

Of course, if people don’t take this seriously and continue to drift through their days as before, dismissals or transfers are not out of the question.”

With these words, the crowd calmed down. Knowing their Gynecology Department wasn’t on the adjustment list, everyone visibly relaxed.

Seeing that the mood had stabilized, Gao Qin stood up, grabbed her bag, and prepared to leave. ”Alright, those on duty should get to it, and those off duty can head home. I still have to go to my clinic to earn some extra money.”

Everyone chuckled.

It was no secret that Gao Qin had her own clinic. Everyone, including Du Heng, knew she still went there after her hospital shift to earn extra money.

As long as it didn’t interfere with hospital matters, no one would question what Gao Qin did after hours, even if she decided to set up a street stall.

Just as she reached the doorway, Gao Qin suddenly stopped and turned back to the group. ”Since we’re on this topic today, let me give you all a heads-up. You must have noticed recently that the Dean has sped up his various initiatives. The publication of papers, obtaining Provincial Level awards, online promotion and publicity—he’s accelerated all of it. Everyone from top to bottom has started to push harder. Don’t just think this is about the Dean’s personal honor and ability; it’s an opportunity for all of you too.”

With that said, Gao Qin left the dumbfounded crowd behind, her short and plump figure suddenly seeming to tower in their eyes.

The same scene was unfolding in various departments throughout the hospital. Only the Internal Medicine Department and Gynecology Department members were as relaxed; others were in genuine disarray.

Du Heng didn’t concern himself with Qiu Pingzhen’s methods. As long as his objectives were ultimately met, the process and means were irrelevant to him.

When it was time to leave work, Du Heng returned to the Pediatrics Department to check on the pediatric patients’ condition.

More than seven hours had passed between noon and the end of the afternoon. The child’s fever had subsided, they were no longer vomiting, and the mild convulsions in their hands and feet had disappeared. The swelling in their throat had also eased remarkably, and the child seemed much more lively and cheerful.

However, the swelling near the child’s ear had not yet begun to recede, preventing them from being too boisterous.

”Xiao Li, continue with the original prescription. Administer it every half an hour, finishing one dose every four hours. It’ll be a tough night for you.”

”Okay, I’ll keep a close eye on it.”

While Du Heng and Xiao Li spoke, the Director of the Pediatrics Department and Si Hongyan, the doctor involved in the case, stood at a distance.

The child had been saved, yet their attitude disappointed Du Heng. And he felt that his decision at noon was not wrong; reform must be put on the agenda.

After a glance at the two of them, Du Heng turned and left.

But he didn’t know that the two didn’t dare approach, not because of him, but because of the rumors Qiu Pingzhen had started. They were apprehensive, even afraid to face Du Heng.

After three months of working together, Du Heng was no longer the Dean anyone dared to contradict. His authority was too imposing now.

Du Heng paid them no mind and walked straight out. Xiao Li, having seen everything, said nothing and simply followed.

Once they were a little distance from the department, Xiao Li whispered, ”Brother, some people came looking for me this afternoon. They want to transfer to our Chinese Medicine Department.”

Du Heng seemed to have anticipated this, merely smiling faintly. ”Just one?”

”Quite a few, actually. All of them are TCM doctors from our hospital.”

”So, why are you telling me now?”

Xiao Li paused for a moment. ”They probably came to me because they know about my relationship with you, Brother. But I don’t want to get involved, and Doctor Ma also told me not to.”

”Doctor Ma said that two months ago, when the Chinese Medicine Department was first established, no one wanted to join. Everyone wanted to stay in their original departments. Only he and one other person followed you, Brother, to set up the Chinese Medicine Department. He said to let them regret it now and that I shouldn’t bother with them.”

Du Heng’s lips twitched slightly. ”Listen to Doctor Ma. Don’t get involved in this. Just focus on taking good care of your current patients.”

With that, Du Heng gave Xiao Li a broad smile and strode away confidently.

「Later that evening」

Back home, Wu Shengnan hummed as she went into the kitchen. Du Heng, meanwhile, had already retrieved his laptop and was typing away at a document.

”Honey, what are you writing again?” Wu Shengnan called out from the kitchen, curious, as she prepared vegetables.

”Just working on something. Need any help?”

”Nope, you carry on with your work,” Wu Shengnan replied loudly. ”Honey, I asked about wedding photos today. They sound pretty good. Pick a time, and we can go check them out, okay?”

”You decide. Just let me know once you’ve set a date,” Du Heng answered without looking up.

”They mentioned outdoor locations, which would mean going out of town. Do you have time for that? If not, we can just get a few shots done at the studio, I guess?”

Du Heng was about to reply when he suddenly sensed something was amiss.

His eyes finally lifted from the computer screen, and he glanced stealthily towards the kitchen.

He saw Wu Shengnan standing at the kitchen doorway, her hand, busy with the vegetables, moving sporadically.

Du Heng understood immediately. ”Let’s definitely do the outdoor shoot. What’s the point of just taking photos in a studio?”

As soon as he said it, Wu Shengnan, who had been standing quietly at the kitchen entrance, lit up. She bounced over with the vegetables in a couple of steps, looking utterly ecstatic.

”Honey, you really want to do an outdoor shoot?”

Du Heng looked at Wu Shengnan with an amused smile. No matter how bold this woman usually appeared, she was, at heart, a woman who loved beauty and romance; it was in her nature.

”Of course. We haven’t really gone out and done anything fun together in so long. This photo shoot is the perfect chance to make up for that.”

Wu Shengnan’s eyes seemed to be smiling. Holding the vegetables, she sat down cross-legged beside Du Heng. ”Honey, can we take photos by the seaside?”

”Seaside?” Du Heng was stunned. He’d thought of outdoor shots, but beach scenery hadn’t crossed his mind. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to go; he simply hadn’t considered it.

From childhood to adulthood, he had lived for thirty years. The farthest place he had ever been was the Capital last year, where he visited its famous lake, Houhai. However, Houhai has no sea. Other than that, the only significant body of water he had seen was the Yellow River that ran through the city. He had no real concept of a beach scene.

His slight hesitation, however, led Wu Shengnan to misunderstand. Her spirits fell a little as she said, ”If you don’t want to, then nevermind. We can find another chance in the future.”

Du Heng hurriedly put his arm around Wu Shengnan’s shoulder. ”It’s not that I don’t want to go. I was just trying to picture what a beach scene would look like. But after thinking about it, all I can come up with are scenes from TV dramas. I don’t actually know what the ocean looks like. That’s why I suddenly froze.”

”So, are you going or not?”

”Yes, of course!” Du Heng readily promised. ”Have you decided how long it will take?”

Hearing Du Heng’s affirmative, Wu Shengnan brightened up again. ”One week. Do you think that’s enough?”

”Is that enough time? If we’re going out, let’s make sure we have a really good time.”

”Then let’s make it ten days.”

”Alright, you handle the arrangements. Let me know once it’s scheduled, and I’ll arrange my work accordingly.”

Wu Shengnan leaned in and gave him a quick peck on the cheek, then, vegetables in hand, bounced back towards the kitchen.

At that moment, she looked nothing like a criminal police officer; she seemed like a completely different person from when they first met.

When they sat down at the dining table, Wu Shengnan casually turned on the TV, its sound providing background noise for their meal.

”Honey, didn’t you participate in some show? When is it going to air?”

”I heard it’s today.”

”Really?” Wu Shengnan immediately grabbed the remote control. ”Which channel? I want to see if my husband looks handsome on TV!”
