This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

However, before their smiles could even spread, Du Heng’s words made their faces fall again. ”But this disease is a severe case of Yin jaundice. The child’s condition has been prolonged without proper treatment, which has allowed the pathogenesis to worsen, leading to the deep infiltration of cold dampness into the blood network. The prognosis is worrisome.”

The prognosis is worrisome?

Will there be sequelae?

This somewhat deflated the two of them. However, when they thought about their current inability to treat hepatitis and jaundice, and that they could not even guarantee the child’s life, they realized they had nothing to be deflated about.

Mei Dong immediately asked, ”President Du, please continue.”

”It’s not difficult to save the child, but I can’t guarantee what they will become afterward. However, I will do my best, my utmost effort.” This time, Du Heng spoke very sincerely.

He had ideas and had thought about what medicine to prescribe, but he couldn’t speak with too much certainty at the very beginning.

Mei Dong thought for a long time. ”President Du, please prescribe the medicine. I will take responsibility if anything goes wrong.”

Du Heng took another long, steady look at Mei Dong and then began writing the prescription.

Virgate Wormwood, Poria Four and Poria Five Decoction to warm yang and expel turbidity, with agastache and Peilan to aromatically transform dampness, pangolin scales, and reach kernel to enter the blood network and resolve stasis—this was his thought process for the prescription this time.

”Administer one dose of medicine over eight hours, three doses in total, with no interruption between them.”

This time, Mei Dong agreed, ”Thank you, President Du. I will personally oversee this.”

With the director personally watching, there was nothing to worry about. Moreover, Du Heng still had the other child nearby and didn’t plan to leave immediately. If any problems arose, he would rush over at the first sign.

Returning to the side of the first child he had attended to, the young doctor who was helping to look after the infant quickly made way for Du Heng. The young doctor’s face was alight with joy; he had witnessed every change in this child. Although these changes were a little different from what was shown in the video, they were all developments in a positive direction.

”Did the child have any convulsions while I was away?”

”No.”

Du Heng acknowledged with an ”Oh,” then bent down to examine the sleeping child again.

Only four convulsions in three hours—that was acceptable.

Afterward, he sat by the child’s side, closely observing until his shift ended.

There were no windows in the monitoring room, making the outside world completely invisible. In such an environment, coupled with being extremely busy, one wouldn’t notice the passage of time unless they deliberately looked at the clock or felt hungry.

Du Heng was the same. He continued to observe and record the child’s changes until Mei Dong appeared by his side again, and only then did he realize it was already six o’clock in the evening.

”President Du, how is this child doing?”

”Except for the stool being somewhat yellow, everything is proceeding as expected.”

Mei Dong breathed a sigh of relief. ”So, President Du, to what extent do you think this child can eventually recover?”

”There will likely be some differences compared to ordinary children. These may manifest as slower responses and uncoordinated physical abilities, but normal learning and daily life shouldn’t be an issue.”

At this stage, Du Heng dared to speak with more assurance. If he didn’t offer some reassurance at this point, it would seem overly disingenuous.

A hint of a smile appeared on Mei Dong’s face. ”That’s good, that’s good.”

”How is the other child over there?”

”The child had one bowel movement; the stool was no longer the previous grayish-white color but had become yellow and soft. They had urinated four times, and the urine’s color had also completely lightened. Furthermore, their appetite had increased sharply, and they could now suckle vigorously. However, the yellow color on the child’s body is becoming more intense.”

Du Heng smiled. ”As long as the child can eat and drink normally, that’s a good sign. The increased yellowing of their skin isn’t a concern; it signifies the jaundice is receding.”

Mei Dong also smiled. ”I think so too. Besides, the various values on the monitor have stabilized. Things should be moving in a positive direction.”

Walking to Du Heng’s side, he said, ”Let’s go, President Du. You’ve worked so hard today. I must treat you to dinner tonight to express my gratitude.”

Du Heng had been sitting all day and felt stiff all over. Moreover, with both children now stable, he had no desire to stay any longer.

”Director Mei, please arrange for someone to record the recovery information for these two children for me.”

”Don’t worry, I’ll definitely have it done according to your requirements.”

After everything was arranged, Du Heng left with Mei Dong.

Since Du Heng had helped him so much today, it was only right that Mei Dong treat him to a meal. However, one of them couldn’t drink due to health reasons, and the other couldn’t drink due to work reasons, so they simply had a meal and then parted ways.

「Early the next morning」

Du Heng didn’t sleep in but instead hurried to the Provincial Women and Children’s Hospital. Although he hadn’t received any calls the previous night, which he understood to mean the children’s conditions were stable, he still couldn’t help but worry about them.

Once again led by Mei Dong into the ward, Du Heng immediately went to see the two children.

The child with cerebral hypoxia was recovering well, but the pace of this recovery was somewhat slower compared to the other child. Therefore, Du Heng didn’t rush to change the prescription and had the child continue with the previous day’s medication.

He then went to see the child with hepatitis. The child’s complexion was now rosy, and he was full of vitality—a stark contrast to the previous day. However, this child was suffering from a critical illness, so such a rapid recovery was to be expected. This child’s situation couldn’t be compared to that of the other child.

Du Heng checked again. All aspects of the child’s condition had improved; the only remaining issue was that the liver and spleen were still palpable, though they had already shrunk by more than half. The medication for this child was not as complex as for the other. As long as the prescription was effective, there was no need to change it frequently. All that was needed was to cure the child’s hepatitis, allowing the liver and spleen to reduce in size and return to their normal positions.

So, the original prescription remained unchanged, and he added three more doses.

With both children progressing well, the day was relatively relaxed. And after reviewing the data recorded for him by Mei Dong’s staff, Du Heng felt even more reassured.

By afternoon, while the child with cerebral hypoxia had become a bit more alert, other changes were still not obvious.

However, the child with hepatitis was now entirely enveloped in yellow, and this yellowing had formed a ’shell’ on his body.

This sight completely reassured Du Heng. Smiling, he reached out and helped the child remove the yellow shell.

”Let’s do another check-up for the child now. The liver and spleen have receded. I believe this check-up will be more accurate than the last one.”

”Certainly. Our ward is fully equipped for all kinds of comprehensive check-ups; there’s no need to go elsewhere.”

Mei Dong agreed and immediately arranged for another check-up.

The results of the check-up brought smiles to everyone’s faces. It appeared the child had no blood-related diseases; it was simply because the hepatitis was so acute and severe that their conventional treatments had been ineffective.

Moreover, judging by the child’s current condition, the prognosis didn’t suggest the worst-case scenarios they had feared. As for the final outcome, a few more days of treatment would be necessary to provide a definitive answer.

「Over the following week」

Du Heng visited a couple more times intermittently, and both children were subsequently discharged from the hospital, one after the other.

”President Du, thank you so much. We hope to have more cooperation in the future.”

”Certainly.”

After seeing off the last child, Du Heng’s consultation was considered complete, and he left feeling relaxed.

During this period, perhaps to save face or because he hadn’t encountered any pediatric patients he truly couldn’t manage, Mei Dong didn’t seek Du Heng’s help again.

Watching Du Heng leave, a young doctor couldn’t help but ask, ”Director, is it possible for Doctor Du to come work in our department?”

Mei Dong gave the young doctor a strange look and said with a half-smile, ”What a pleasant dream you’re having!”

”Is it really impossible?”

”You can get rid of the ’really’ part.” Mei Dong saw Du Heng’s figure disappear and turned to walk towards the ward. ”The Municipal Maternal and Child Health Hospital is not an option. Besides, this hospital of ours is a deputy department-level unit, and President Du is the top leader of his own institution. On what grounds would he come to our department? Even if he came to our department, his professional title would be lower than mine, but his administrative level would be higher. So, who would we listen to, me or him?”

The young doctor was stumped. Just being a doctor, why does it have to be so complicated?

Just as he was feeling disheartened, Mei Dong suddenly said, ”It’s impossible for him to come to our department, but it is possible for him to take a position at our hospital.”
