This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

The young doctor laughed happily. ”The Director has a keen ear. Indeed, this doctor is from our Jinzhou. And despite his youth, he’s the Dean of the Municipal Maternal and Child Health Hospital.”

”Municipal Maternal and Child Health Hospital?” Mei Dong’s eyes widened in disbelief. ”And he’s the Dean?”

After watching Du Heng’s video, the young doctor had already looked up Du Heng’s profile. Although Du Heng’s resume wasn’t available online, it could be found on the Municipal Maternal and Child Health Hospital’s webpage and on Du Heng’s own Short Video Account. As a neonatologist, he now felt a touch of admiration, even...worship, for Du Heng. Neonatal hypoxia! Cerebral palsy! The scourges of the Neonatology Department! A constant thorn in the side of pediatric patients’ parents! And someone his own age had solved it, a solution acknowledged by his own Director, a pediatric expert in the Northwest Five Provinces.

”Yes, he is the Dean. And just a few days ago, that viral online news about a celebrity’s cancer—the doctor involved was this same Doctor Du.”

Looking at the somewhat agitated young doctor, Mei Dong felt a bit lost. They were discussing pediatrics; how had they suddenly jumped to oncology? ”Slow down. What celebrity cancer news?”

”A celebrity named Feng Su was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Surgery wasn’t an option, but this Doctor Du treated her, and she even fully retained her fertility.”

Mei Dong was stunned.

So, this Doctor Du isn’t just skilled in pediatrics, but also has a hand in gynecology and oncology? Isn’t he practically tailor-made for the Provincial Women and Children’s Hospital?

”Is what you said true?”

”It’s true.” The young doctor affirmed with utmost sincerity. ”At the time, there were various videos online, and the celebrity, Feng Su, personally came forward to confirm it. Initially, there was a lot of interest, but Feng Su was so shameless in chasing clout that she completely overshadowed Doctor Du, and people lost interest in the matter.”

Mei Dong frowned. What on earth did this have to do with anything? How did a doctor get entangled with celebrities?

”Alright, send me the news about this Doctor Du, and I’ll look into it.” Mei Dong didn’t want to waste any more time on irrelevant gossip. ”If possible, we could invite Doctor Du to help. The child we’re treating is in a similar condition to the one in the video. However, it’s been three days since the child was born, and I don’t know if there’s still a possibility for treatment.”

The young doctor suddenly remembered his original purpose for seeking out Mei Dong—to help the child under his care.

Without further delay, he quickly sent all the materials he had to Mei Dong.

Once Mei Dong received the materials, he immediately went to see the Director of the Medical Affairs Office.

The Medical Affairs Director of the Provincial Women and Children’s Hospital was a genuine Director. Although Qiu Pingzhen was also called a Director, he was, at best, only a section chief. As the Medical Affairs Director of the Provincial Women and Children’s Hospital, he was truly incredibly busy; the matters he had to handle were more than ten times those of Qiu Pingzhen.

However, his connections were genuinely strong, and his influence was considerable. Upon receiving the news from Mei Dong, he agreed, made a few calls when he found a moment, and then Du Heng’s materials were sent to his email box.

In Jinzhou, if he wanted to find out about any doctor, it was truly a matter of minutes for him.

But he was too busy. After making the calls, he completely forgot about the matter.

Meanwhile, Du Heng, his shift over, finally straightened his back from amidst a pile of paperwork.

He glanced around the office, a sense of disarray filling him once more. This job, he felt again, wasn’t very meaningful; mainly, it just wasn’t satisfying to do.

After packing his things, Du Heng drove away from the hospital. Today, however, he didn’t go to see Wu Shengnan but sought out Wei Kaida instead.

Wei Kaida had been in a foul mood all day.

After accompanying Li Nating for her surgery in the morning, he had returned home. But after moping around all day, he proactively called Du Heng, asking to meet up that evening.

In the past, only Dong had been constantly busy. Later, Jin was recognized as a key figure in the hospital and also gradually became harder to get hold of, especially after becoming the lead surgeon in his department. Unless it was something major, he rarely had time to come out for a drink.

Now, even Du Heng was becoming engrossed in work, and opportunities to sit down together were scarce.

The most common interaction among the brothers these days was an occasional message popping up in the group chat, a bit of mutual teasing, and then they’d all disappear again.

The two found a roadside stall, ordered some food, and then fell into silence.

Wei Kaida’s Adam’s apple bobbed. He suddenly waved his hand and called out, ”Boss, two cans of draft beer! Ice cold!”

Seeing Wei Kaida’s action, Du Heng immediately slapped his outstretched hand, frowning. ”Are you trying to kill yourself or what? Don’t forget, you’re still on medication.”

”I feel awful.”

”Feeling awful is no excuse,” Du Heng retorted sharply, then turned to the stall owner. ”Boss, cancel the beer. Just hurry up with the skewers we ordered.”

When he turned back, Wei Kaida looked completely dejected.

”Playa, this isn’t like you. Besides, you can have children in the future. Why so downcast?” Du Heng said, picking up the cup of cheap tea from the table. ”Come on, bro, let’s toast with tea instead of wine. With me here, set your mind at ease. No pressure. I guarantee you’ll still be the playa.”

Wei Kaida managed a weak smile and, to be polite, clinked his cup against Du Heng’s.

Taking a sip of tea, Wei Kaida said bitterly, ”Du, you misunderstood. I’m not unhappy because of the child.”

”Then are you worried about Li Nating’s health?” Du Heng asked, then patted his chest. ”You can rest assured about that. My Municipal Maternal and Child Health Hospital might be a bit run-down, but our standards are definitely solid. Director Gao herself performed the surgery, so you have even less to worry about. Within a week, I’ll definitely return you a lively and energetic wife.”

Wei Kaida wasn’t amused by Du Heng’s words. Still looking melancholic, he said, ”It’s neither of those.”

”Then just say it.”

”Sigh, Tingting and I were planning to get married primarily because of the child. And when my parents found out Tingting was pregnant, you should have seen how ecstatic they were. They practically want to worship her now.”

Wei Kaida gave a bitter smile. ”Tingting’s parents are just as happy. They even want her to stop working immediately and just rest at home to nurture the pregnancy. But now that this has happened, I really don’t know what the consequences will be if the four elders find out.”

Du Heng dropped his playful demeanor and became serious.

He wasn’t naturally a jester anyway. If it weren’t for Wei Kaida, he wouldn’t make such expressions or say such things.

”From what you’re saying, does this mean you don’t want to marry Li Nating?”

”No, you misunderstood. Hmm... or maybe I didn’t express myself clearly.”

”If you want to get married, then that settles it.” Du Heng’s expression firmed. ”Tell the truth. Just say there was a problem with the child’s development. It’s not something shameful. Besides, you’re both still young. There will be plenty of opportunities to have children in the future. Why worry about this?”

”I’m worried the four elders won’t be able to accept it.”

Du Heng scoffed. ”Playing the filial son now, are you?”

Just then, the server brought their grilled skewers. Du Heng turned to take them and placed them on the table.

”You vastly underestimate your parents. They’ve watched you grow up for thirty years; their emotional resilience is a hundred times stronger than yours. I believe Li Nating’s parents are similar. Just try to relax.”

Du Heng picked up a skewer and handed it to Wei Kaida. ”Right now, both of you should focus on recuperating. Then, get married quickly. If you do that, the four elders will absolutely be fine. If you two don’t get married, *that* would be a world-shattering catastrophe for them.”

Wei Kaida fiercely bit into a skewer and shot Du Heng a sideways glance. ”You’re so eloquent, so say more.”

”Oh, get lost,” Du Heng chuckled at Wei Kaida’s words. ”Hurry up and eat. I have to go back up the mountain after this.”

”Why go back up the mountain?”

”You, the playa, are getting married, so of course, I need to get married too. Can’t leave me as the lone bachelor, right?”

Seeing Du Heng’s smile, Wei Kaida paused, his skewer halfway to his mouth, looking surprised. ”Your father-in-law, the high official, agreed?”

”He agreed. On June 1st, he’ll meet my brother. We’ll handle the engagement and the betrothal gifts all at once, and then set the date.”

”That’s great.” Wei Kaida suddenly smiled too. ”Our brothers, we’re all finally on the right track.”

Du Heng laughed heartily. ”You’re overthinking it. We’ve always been on the right track. You’re the only one who’s just come back, okay?”

The two brothers ate their skewers and drank the inferior tea, their laughter gradually dispelling the gloom in their hearts.

When Wu Shengnan appeared at the roadside stall in her police uniform, Wei Kaida’s eyes lit up sharply.

”I told you, you lucky dog! Look at this girl. Enhanced by this uniform, she’s truly slender and graceful, exuding a valiant and heroic spirit.”

Wei Kaida whispered, teasing Du Heng. Although it wasn’t Du Heng’s first time seeing Wu Shengnan in her police uniform, he was still struck by her appearance as she walked towards them at the roadside stall.

Her looks aside, just this heroic aura alone already put her leagues above those common, overly made-up women.

”Why did you come without changing?” Du Heng asked as Wu Shengnan reached them, pulling out a seat for her.

Wu Shengnan greeted Wei Kaida, then said softly, ”I was just worried you’d get anxious waiting. Besides, we have to go back up the mountain tonight. If it’s too late, it’ll be hard to see on the road and difficult to travel.”

”Alright. What do you want to eat?”

”Just order anything.”

A beautiful woman sitting at a roadside stall was already an attraction. Now, in a police uniform, she seemed somewhat conspicuous, causing the previously boisterous atmosphere to quiet down a notch.

However, as the sky darkened, Wu Shengnan’s uniform became less noticeable, and she gradually blended into the crowd. The surrounding noise slowly returned to its previous level, perhaps even a little louder.

After the three of them had eaten their fill, Du Heng and Wu Shengnan were anxious to return to the mountain, so they prepared to pay and leave.

But just as he raised his hand to call the server, a noisy argument erupted behind them.
