This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

But in the eyes of each of them, there was a glimmer of hope.

Among these people, many didn’t even know what their child looked like. As soon as the doctors inside said something was missing, they hurriedly sent it; when the doctors said they were in arrears, they rushed to pay.

There was also a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in the Municipal Maternal and Child Health Hospital, but most of the time it was quiet, a far cry from the bustling and crowded state here.

In fact, from the outside, the brand-new, connected buildings of the Provincial Women and Children’s Hospital were already in stark contrast to the dilapidated old buildings of the Municipal Maternal and Child Health Hospital, let alone the interior of the buildings.

So when Du Heng saw the scene before him, he just sighed slightly and had no further thoughts.

Monopolies are not limited to the business world; the medical industry also has this concept.

There were two ways to enter the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: one was the Family Channel and the other was the Medical Channel.

However, Du Heng had not called Mei Dong, so he could only go through the Family Channel.

But looking at the scene of the families lined up in front of him, he didn’t rush to call Mei Dong or explain his purpose to the receptionist doctor, but just stood quietly to one side.

”Your twin daughters—the older one is recovering quite well now, but you should take the younger one home today. Let her be reunited with her mother,” the doctor at the window said expressionlessly to a haggard-looking father.

These words made the exhausted father’s steps waver, almost unable to stand steady. ”Doctor, what’s wrong with our younger daughter?”

”Congenital absence of the cardiac septum. This means her heart simply cannot supply blood to her entire body like a normal child’s heart.”

The doctor at the window spoke these words calmly, without any discernible fluctuation in his voice.

”The child is still small, and her heart can still manage to supply blood for now. But in a couple of days, when she’s a little bigger and starts moving her arms and legs on her own, it’s possible that just lifting an arm a bit too high will be enough for her heart to fail to supply blood.”

The haggard father immediately appeared utterly helpless, his hands clenched into fists and propped on the table in front of him, supporting his body as if he would collapse the next second.

Du Heng had already prepared to help, but the man’s resilience surpassed his expectations.

Shaking slightly again, he began to fight for the last chance for his younger twin daughter, ”Doctor, is there really no other way? Can’t this be treated with surgery?”

The expression of the doctor at the window finally darkened, and he shook his head gently. ”The child is too young, only 30 days old, and simply cannot undergo surgery. If the child had a septal defect, we might be able to try something.”

”But with a complete absence of the septum, we really have no options.”

The doctor sighed. ”Take her home. Let her spend a few days with her mother. Whenever the child passes, come find me, and I’ll issue the certificate for her.”

The man’s lips were trembling, his facial muscles were trembling, his eyes, even his entire body was trembling, yet he still managed to support himself without falling. ”Doctor, what about my older daughter?”

”The older daughter’s condition is temporarily stable, but it will be about ten more days before she can be discharged,” the doctor at the window said, taking out several documents. ”Sign here, then follow me this way. We’ll go get the child.”

This father was obviously on the verge of collapse, but he persisted without falling to the ground or crying out.

Even at the moment of signing, he had somehow calmed down again.

But Du Heng noticed that the man’s eyes were completely blank.

After signing, the man followed the doctor down a branching corridor and quickly disappeared from sight.

Meanwhile, the crowd waiting at the entrance grew more talkative.

”That young man is from Linzhou. I heard their two babies were sent here directly from their local area.”

”I’ve been chatting with that young man for a while. He said the babies were sent here shortly after birth, and he only caught a glimpse of them in the ambulance.”

”He also said his wife has been hospitalized over there for more than ten days.”

”Sigh, hospitalization and all that isn’t the issue, as long as the mother and children are fine. But now this... How can I put it?”

”I heard from the young man that it’s been almost a month since the twin girls were sent here. It’s cost 360,000 yuan in total. It seems they’ve sold everything they could from home and borrowed all they could.”

”Alas, 180,000 yuan for one child, and now she’s gone just like that.”

”I think this hospital is just unscrupulous. They knew the baby couldn’t be saved but kept her hospitalized day after day. Now, I reckon they just can’t milk any more money from them and can’t hide the truth any longer, so they’re finally letting them take the baby away.”

”I think so too. The family paid hundreds of thousands over a month. If they’d let the baby die in there, the hospital would have been in serious trouble.”

”So corrupt.”

”It is shady. Congenital absence of the cardiac septum—they must have found that out long ago. If it wasn’t for the money, why would they only send the baby out now?”

”Alright, alright, that’s enough. Your own babies are still in there, remember?”

As a more ’sensible’ voice spoke up, the group of gossiping men and women suddenly remembered their own children were still inside, and they all immediately fell silent.

Hearing the words of these family members, Du Heng’s gaze hardened slightly.

Thirty days, absence of cardiac septum, 360,000 yuan, 180,000 yuan.

Just as he was pondering these numbers, he caught a glimpse of the man from earlier, holding a pale-yellow blanket, disappearing in another direction in the blink of an eye.

And the doctor who had just disappeared from the window reappeared in the same spot again.

”Is the family of XX here? Please come over.”

As the doctor finished speaking, a rather stout man hurried over.

It was clear his legs were weak; he had to lean against the wall as he walked.

However, after witnessing the previous father’s ordeal, this man’s reaction was entirely understandable.

”Are you the family of XX’s child?”

”Yes, I’m the child’s father.”

The doctor at the window merely said, ”Oh,” then lowered his head to flip through the registration book in his hand.

This simple action made the man unable to stand steady. He stumbled back two steps, his back hitting the wall.

”Your child was born prematurely, and now this jaundice isn’t subsiding, which is very dangerous. Let me explain the risks of severe jaundice; you need to take this seriously...”

The doctor then launched into a rapid-fire explanation about jaundice, and the more he spoke, the more panicked the rather stout man became.

Someone nearby couldn’t bear to watch and quickly shoved a stool from under themselves towards the man.

When the doctor, engrossed in his own explanation, mentioned that it could be life-threatening, all color instantly drained from the man’s face.

”...So, you need to take this very seriously.” Having finished his spiel, the doctor finally looked up at the man, not at all surprised by his reaction.

Having done this job for a long time, what kind of family members hadn’t he seen?

This one was actually doing alright, relatively speaking.

”The child has had blue light therapy for ten days, but the jaundice isn’t clearing. We now need to investigate if there are any blood-related diseases.”

”We could collect the baby’s blood here and send it to the Blood Center for testing, but that would take too much time.”

”So today, you’ll have to make the trip yourself. Take the child’s blood sample directly there. We’ve already contacted the Blood Center; they’ll test it as soon as you deliver it, and we should have the results by tomorrow.”

Upon hearing that he needed to deliver something, the man immediately felt much more relaxed, and the color began to slowly return to his face.

”Doctor, is this Blood Center in our hospital?”

”Of course not. If it were in our hospital, why would we need you to deliver it?” the doctor replied softly. ”It’s the Provincial Blood Station, on XXX Road.”

”Here, let me write down the address for you. Just follow this to find it.”

The doctor quickly wrote down the address and then handed three labeled blood collection tubes to the man. ”Just give these to the people in the Inspection Department. You don’t need to worry about anything else.”
