Our Family Has Fallen

Chapter 1245: Chapter 682: Scene of Carnage

Because they avoided the bustling area of the central square, they took a detour with them.

After leaving the small town, they wanted the group to take a carriage, but since these people remained silent, they could only guess from the legion’s reaction that the carriage could only seat four, while there were ten of them, fully armed.

A wide carriage could squeeze in more, but it seemed they didn’t quite trust Hamlet.

So they could only march slowly. Anyway, they were tireless, but it was hard for the guide, who walked all night and was finally relieved.

”Let’s go, let’s report...”

By the time the legion appeared and the reason was analyzed, the news had already spread internally here, and now they were going to report the situation along the way.

In fact, the connection between the legion, Ancient Empire’s legacy, or treasure was not something they did, they were even a little confused why those adventurers reacted so strongly...

The day wasn’t fully bright yet, and the legion had already stormed into the ruins, followed by many people who wanted to extract information about the Ancient Empire’s treasure from the legion.

In this situation, the guards warned those adventurers, but no one listened. On the contrary, they even suspected that Hamlet was planning to monopolize the treasure.

The guards said no more, allowing these people to enter the darkness.

Regardless of their identities or the situation, they followed mindlessly, even the scavengers were no exception.

The dim environment made it difficult to see what was happening ahead.

Those following the legion heard noises from the front, and when they got closer, they found nothing but scattered bones on the ground; it was clear the skeletons failed to impede the legion’s advance.

One could say that the followers had an unobstructed path! Unobstructed indeed!

But the legion advanced too quickly, and the skeletons, though cleared at the front, were endless. As the startled monsters moved with unprecedented daytime vigor, they encircled from both sides.

The legion could crush skeletons, but that didn’t mean the ones following could do the same. Just a slight obstruction severed their connection with the legion.

Initially, they didn’t care much, thinking skeletons were slow and fragile, but those catching up quickly found that skeletons, without sunlight’s suppression, had become swift and fierce.

Malignant power cloaked the skeletons, displaying an indescribable toughness; blades wouldn’t sever them and might even get stuck or rebound.

Even blunt weapons struggled to shatter them, and fallen ones would rise again.

The skeletons surged, pursuing the scent of the living. Though unarmed, countless ghostly hands clawed at them, the terrifying scene breaking most people’s sanity.

Moreover, the malevolent aura on the skeletons, infiltrating through touch, corroded their flesh and soul, deepening corruption.

Greed blinded their eyes, making them forget certain places should be avoided, especially the scavengers.

The scavenger group, thinking fortune favored them, was among them, excitedly anticipating seizing treasures to reach the peak of life.

Yet disaster scattered them instantly, and with little resistance, frenzied adventurers wielded weapons to kill, while the strong mercenaries used them as shields.

Touching a skeleton brought an icy chill piercing through flesh to the soul, freezing them into sluggishness and rendering them unable to control their bodies.

No one heeded their cries for help; despair and fear devoured their souls, plunging their emotions to the lowest point.

”Ah! Run!”

”Help me! Save me!”

”Don’t push me...”

Their fate was truly depicted as such; only the strong, armed mercenaries could resist a bit, defending with weapons and armor.

But the scavengers lacked any form of resistance and were engulfed by frantic skeletons, leaving only screams and wails.

In truth, had they united, they might have held on longer, but as competitors forced together in crisis, everyone sought refuge within, hastening collapse, and panic ensued.

Yet they were like sardines packed in a can, unable to escape, as the scent of life attracted more skeletons... their retreat was cut off, no way to withdraw.

Everyone began to forget the so-called treasure, with no time for regret, only left with—

Despair, fear, self-torment, paranoia, savagery, madness... a man-made hell unfolded.

Fortunately, as it was near dawn, the sun gradually rose, and its light seemed to suppress the skeletons, slowing them and making their movements more sluggish.

At the same time, the more cautious adventurers, who hadn’t followed earlier, feared losing news of the legion. At first light, they rushed over, mistaking the chaos ahead as a sign of a great find and charged full force!

The ”reinforcements” alleviated their pressure, but when they rushed in, they found no treasure, only a field of corpses and frenzied, terror-stricken adventurers remaining.
